To the person wondering if KZIO is coming back...
I highly doubt it, as the call letters are owned by one company, and the frequency is owned by another company. The only way it would happen is if the call letters were given up to be used by the owner of 102.5.
Being a college town, the Twin Ports area is desperately in need of a Top-40/CHR that does not call itself a "mix" station. The owner of 102.5 runs a couple of "heritage" CHR stations in WI. I think the operating formula used at those stations would work very well in the Duluth market. Check out wifc.com and wixx.com for a listen. |

Duluth embarrassed state wide again on the latest Taxpayers League eUpdate. Would you want to move to DFL Duluth or invest here?
***************************************************************
Taxation Without Representation
Last month a grassroots coalition of Duluth citizens and taxpayers filed a lawsuit against the Duluth School District. In June of 2007 the school board adopted what has been called the Red Plan which is basically a long-range plan for how they will use, buy, and sell the district’s facilities. The price tag for the Red Plan is $437 million and is set to be spent without a vote by the taxpayers who will foot the bill.
The school district used a legal loophole to adopt the Red Plan. The loophole is state law which allows school districts in special cities to bond for “health and safety emergency problems.” But the red plan doesn’t spend money only on these types of problems, but will instead will remodel some facilities and build three completely new schools.
Many school district levies have been proposed and passed in Duluth, but this one is different because the citizens didn’t have the opportunity to vote on this one. Even though the grassroots organization Let Duluth Vote has gathered over 3,000 signatures in hopes of getting a vote on the Red Plan, the school board still refuses to put the issue to a vote by the people.

Will it be at the appraised value or the assessed value? You be the judge...
For sale: the mayor's house
You know what I love about Duluth? The little quirks that make it such a big little city. Say, for example, you were out on Sunday morning visiting open houses and happened to hit a cozy, old fashioned-style three bedroom home in the East Hillside/Chester Park neighborhood. You might look around, see some photos on the walls and realize: oh, this is the mayor's house.
And then you might realize the agent selling the home is the mayor's wife, Laura. These types of things just wouldn't happen in Minneapolis/St. Paul. Or maybe that's just me.
At any rate, Ness said the family is indeed hoping to move.
"I think Donny could live here forever," she said. "But I like projects to work on in the house -- and I've worked on just about all of the projects I can."
Ness said the family found a spot in the Observation Hill neighborhood that'd be within walking distance to downtown, city hall and the library (as a resident of that neighborhood I'll say that it's easy to walk down to those areas, not so easy to walk back up). The family, after all, still has only one car.
"I really enjoy it and am committed to being a one-car family," she said. "It keeps us closer."
Ness said she's been a registered real estate agent since last July and is listed with Edmunds, but said she mostly works part-time representing a couple families at a time. As for the house she's selling now, she said during the open house on Sunday she got a few "oh, this is the mayor's house" type comments but nothing was weird and had about a half dozen real shoppers go through. And if you're still interested in making an offer, so far it's still on the market.

Reader's view: Mining legislation would not protect environment
The points made in the March 6 letter against nonferrous mining (“Local residents also concerned about pollution”) were off-base and did not appropriately reflect the proposed nonferrous mining projects in Minnesota.
The letter referenced outcomes from old technologies, mines that have not operated for decades and types of mining that simply are not being proposed in Minnesota. Minnesota remains one of the most progressive states in enforcing environmental standards and in ensuring land and lakes remain pristine. The nonferrous mining companies in Minnesota are committed to environmentally sound practices and share the same concerns as the groups proposing legislation that would add requirements to non-ferrous mining.
The mining companies are working with numerous state agencies to ensure Minnesota’s wilderness is not adversely affected by their work.
Minnesotans are rightfully proud of the environmental health we enjoy. But citing old hazards that have befallen other parts of the world, and from organizations that simply want to stop mining, should not be a reason to deny the important development of the nonferrous mining industry in Minnesota. Nonferrous mining will bring thousands of environmentally safe, good-paying, enduring jobs and tens of millions of dollars to cities, schools and the state.
I care about protecting the environment and investing in the state. The proposed legislation would do neither.

This act will have religious meaning to the Riley's.
The origin of the term den of iniquity can be traced back to the New Testament of the Bible. In both Gospel of Mark and Matthew, Jesus condemns those who have been using the sacred temple as a marketplace, proclaiming that they have "made it a den of thieves." To this day, writers use the word "den" to mean a place where iniquitous activities are carried out. |

_____________________________________________________________________
Reader's view: City has better things to do than go after homeless
After reading the March 6 article, “Officials roust cellar dwellers from Duluth buildings,” I have to ask: What is the matter with the city of Duluth? It has nothing better to do than go after homeless men trying to stay warm and stay off the streets?
Interim Fire Marshal Marnie Grondahl said the men were told it “was unsafe for living.” City Councilor Sharla Gardner said the men were in a “dangerous situation.” What standards are these women using? I realize the fire marshal’s office has very high standards for “livability;” however, in the case of homelessness, are these standards reasonable? Indeed, is the basement of the Temple Opera building less safe than the frigid streets of Duluth? Does the potential danger outweigh the real dangers of living on the streets?
At the end of the day, the fire marshal and city councilor went home to their warm, well-equipped homes. If they were concerned with the men’s welfare, why didn’t they offer a room in their homes?
The city clearly seems to have a vendetta against the building’s owner, Dr. Eric Ringsred. The city officials do not really seem to care about homelessness, except to use it as a cudgel against Ringsred. The actions of these representatives of the city of Duluth were despicable and were among the most blatant displays of un-Christian behavior.
Jesus Christ said, “I want mercy and not sacrifice;” “blessed are the merciful, for they will be shown mercy;” and “I tell you, what you do for the least among you, you do for me.”
Anyone who wants to make Duluth a better city could start by feeding the hungry and clothing the naked.

Local View: No school district could afford Duluth’s red plan
Duluth’s Lars Fladmark couldn’t believe the new license plates issued for his truck: “709 BAD.” He swears he didn’t request the number-letter combination, but the more he learns about his Independent School District 709’s long-range building plan, the more he’s convinced his plates are dead-on accurate.
By: Lars Fladmark, special to the News Tribune, Duluth News Tribune
Last year I received a surprise when I renewed the license plates on my truck. My new plate number was “709 BAD.” Under oath, I swear I did not request those numbers! However, the longer I have listened to the debate over Independent School District 709’s so-called red plan, the more I have come to believe my plates were prophetic — or maybe someone at the license bureau was sending a message.
From 1985 to 1993, I served as CEO of Beckley-Cardy, a national school supply firm based then in Duluth. Our sales force of 110 called on every public and private school in the U.S. Since we sold everything from chalk to school furniture, our sales staff followed carefully the career paths of superintendents. We called them “builders.”
There were superintendents who specialized in moving from district to district, always promoting the construction of new schools. Since new schools were always our best sales opportunity, our sales staff followed these superintendents carefully, particularly since they generally moved to new horizons once new schools were in place.
I understand Duluth Schools Superintendent Keith Dixon has at least one new school behind him, so I would guess he probably won’t be retiring from District 709.
I think a great injustice is being perpetrated on the Duluth district. In my entire career, I never saw or heard of any school facilities plan of the magnitude of Duluth’s red plan approved without a voter referendum. Never ever, coast to coast or border to border.
Add a school board and a superintendent seemingly taking pride in hijacking former Rep. Mike Jaros’ bill allowing construction without voter approval in the name of desegregation. The Duluth district used a highly questionable loophole opinion not vested in any specific legislative act or judicial ruling.
That’s riding a bit roughshod over legislative intent, I would say.
Many dollars have been committed to the project without any true legal approval. I’d call that an injustice any time.
Anyone who believes in democracy can’t possibly endorse this process.
What led to the Boston Tea Party and the American Revolution?
We in Duluth did not elect a school board to become a supra taxing authority. Any claims to the contrary only reflect the elitist attitude that the common man can’t be trusted to make the “right” decision.
That is democracy defiled. My license plates tell the truth.
Also, the immense costs of the red plan are ridiculous. During the 1970s and 1980s, my company purchased and remodeled 11 different buildings, rebuilding them into totally up-to-date office buildings still in use today. Eight of them are concentrated on First Street in downtown Duluth. We tuckpointed, installed new windows, reinsulated, put on new roofs, built skywalks to connect them, added elevators and air conditioning and did whatever else was needed. We wound up with a cost-per-square-foot averaging less than $3. We proved it’s less expensive to remodel if buildings are structurally sound.
It’s rather clear, I think, that Central, East and Denfeld high schools are much more than just structurally sound. I’d wager a good bet a reliable contractor could bring them well up to date for less than $30 million.
No, that won’t give the 35 or so clear acres our benighted State Board of Education says is required. Only Northland Country Club could accommodate that — and hey, with no houses to knock down or people to move.
I’d just like to know on what planet our School Board members are living. No metro area in the U.S. can afford what’s being attempted here. Duluth has good physical plants that are properly located.
What’s important in education is the teaching staff and that the physical equipment and its maintenance are kept up to date. Just fix up our existing schools. Please.
Lars Fladmark lives in Duluth.

79823 - Thu Apr 2 19:34:14 2009 - [Duluth does not need "tourists"] By: C K |
I stand by what I said earlier. You basement dwellers are incredibly *racist*.
Victim in Waiting, how dare you say something like this ? "According to the recent stats released our murder rate is worse than that of Brooklyn Dark, sorry, I mean Brooklyn Park, MN." Hate speech at it's worse ! It's sickening to know that people like you live in my community.
Cynic, concerning the "two tourists who were staying at the Holiday Inn downtown. They were waiting for a cab to take them to canal park. I said it is not that far why don't you walk. They said they were afraid to walk because of how some of the people on Superior street looked."
To be quite honest, Duluth does not need "tourists" like that. Fear of "others", fear of how others "look" is another indicator of latent racism. What do those tourists expect, a "lily white" community ?
Sheez. Get with it people. Yes Duluth is changing, it is changing for the BETTER. Families of color are starting new lives in Duluth. The culture and diversity they are bringing to Duluth is wonderful, it makes Duluth a better, more diverse, more tolerant, a more welcoming city. As the DNT reported, as the police have stated, Duluth does *not* have a crime problem. Yes there are "crimes" however they are not being committed by , "imports", using your bigoted vocabulary. Crimes are committed by people from all classes. The majority of which are being committed by the majority population, whites, more specifically, white males. I wonder how many of you basement dwellers have DUI's. I'm sure many of you do. As I said before, blaming the "crime problem" on outsiders is clearly race baiting. A desperate tactic by racist outcasts in a community which rejects your bigotry and hate. |

79822 - Thu Apr 2 18:52:29 2009 - [Sidekick idiotic values] By: Adam R |
| Danny G, nice try at deflecting the issue. You are a piece of work. Some thug talks trash and threatens your wife and daughter and you respond that this thug, "C", was put here to amuse you. Then you engage with this nasty thing instead of doing what a normal person would have done which is, at a minimum, be done with a thug like this. Instead, you have become a sidekick for this "thing" and now are crying that a DCB moderator didn't tell you about some alleged threat from the Watch Witch. What would you have done if you had known earlier, invited her to your house for Christmas? Either you are one of the biggest idiots ever or you don't seem to value your family very much. Just an observation. Now go crawl back with the Uglystick under the rock and amuse each other. That is all I have to say about this because there is no remedy available for you for being just plain dumb. Bye bye. |

79821 - Thu Apr 2 18:06:03 2009 - [Council need not tackle school issues] By: C Double U |
| The reason the City Councilors aren't doing anything regarding the red plan is because they weren't elected to decide school related issues. I voted for School Board members and I don't need a City Councilor like Gary Krause inserting his opinions into something he knows very little about other than trying to win a popularity contest with his constituency. Now I don't like some of the things that the Red Plan has in it but no plan is perfect and change is inevitable in this community, whether it be in the City or the School District. We pay our elected officials to work where they were elected to work. |

79820 - Thu Apr 2 17:15:57 2009 - [Tired of paying for the DFL nonsense] By: Web Hound Jr. |
A very good read from http://www.areavoices.com/buzz/
Help me report the story, re: home assessments thread
********************************************************
Herein lies the problem. I also would not have a problem paying a higher portion of city taxes IF I knew the money I was paying was being spent prudently. Let's look at a few malfeasances:
1) Millions to pay for retiree health care which surpasses even the more generous plans other public employees enjoy. I'm struggling to pay for my own family's health insurance. Now my taxes, our taxes, are paying for full boat ride of retirees?
2) Thousands to the aquarium. Is this where my tax money is supposed to go?
3) Overtime costs paid for work not completed in the Water & Gas department, where you get paid large amounts of money to just carry a pager? Overtime to firefighters, which is also contractually built in, or scheduled overtime.
4) VERY LONG coffee breaks by city staff at a coffee house out west
5) An"compromise" on PERA overpayment to the state where instead of the city receiving the full $1.3 million of overpayment, we're only getting $400 thousand or so. Remember, this is taxpayer dollars
6) A loss of $2 million or so on an investment loss from a shaky investment made by the city
7) Trying to take the motel owners land on 1st street by eminent domain, then having an arbitration board rule that the land was worth much more thus resulting in MORE taxpayer dollars going into an underperforming parking ramp
8) Laying off AFSCME employees from the zoo (violation of contract, supposedly) then having to re-hire them back at the full wage for 6 months to fill in on entry-level positions
9) a $3,50 per month street-lighting fee. If taxes are not for street lights, what are they for?
This city gets enough money right now, at least from me, so if anyone wants to send in a little extra with the May 15th property tax payment, that would be great. I, unfortunately, won't be one of them at this point.
MODERATOR: WHJ, that is a good point. If all those who want to pay more taxes just sent in a little more, everything would be fine. The truth of the matter is that they only want to get into mom and pops pockets further and further to pay for these obscene salaries and pensions in DFL Duluth. These DFL politicians were, after all, bought and paid for with local special interest money from the likes of AFSCME, DFL, and DFD PAC. What else should we expect from such Chicago style corruption?

79811 - Wed Apr 1 16:01:15 2009 - [When do I converse with "C" like buds?] By: Danny G |
Adam R...when exactly do I converse with C like we're best buds? She says stupid things on various online forums (like she always does), I make fun of her for it. She is a moron and as I've said before I'm convinced that she was put on Earth to personally amuse me. Although, I have recently seen a picture of her (for the first time, I might add). She may also have been put on Earth to give me nightmares.
Now...turn back the clock a bit to the incedent where she "attacked" my family. You may recall one of the posts that the staff here at the DCB didnt want to post because it was indeed a direct threat to me. It was very specific with a time and a place mentioned and the threat came from (according to the DCB staff) the one and only C herself. Rather than inform me directly of the threat via an email or something so I could actually do something about it (my email address is very well known and I have conversed with the DCB's Tony via email in the past) it was decided by the DCB staff to hold off and post the threat AFTER the fact. Either the person in charge of the DCB then (and I assume now) completely made up the threat, or they were too stupid to do what any sane person would do and inform the intended target of it.
And that's all I have to say about all of that. If any of you want to man up and talk to me about any of this, you know how to reach me...dannydoesduluth@live.com |

Danny, if you don't get it, you never will. All I can add is that if some goon like "C" attacked my family the way yours was attacked, the last thing I would do is enagage in conversation with IT like we were best buds. You might want to blog under something like Nadless Danny, period. To each their own, but I lost all respect for you on that one long ago. I would prefer not to even see "Danny G" mentioned here. Go have another round with the Uglystick.
Let's talk real stuff like how all these government pensions will be doing when the dollar is devalued by 50 or more percent. Will Big Iron still be talking about the fact that he has a contract? Hopefully we won't have to wait long.
I see that Obama will be handing out more free money to people who pay no income tax at all with his withholding credit. All they have to do is file a tax return at the end of this year and next and the Messiah will hand them money for doing nothing. Any idea who will be paying for this? Real change will come only when enough people are adversely affected by this massive wealth redistribution and government either has no money to pay its employeees or government employees refuse to work because the money is worthless. Either way, that is when the "Change" happens! |

Our view: Sign up now to track Duluth crime
Only about 220 Duluthians have signed up to receive daily e-mails with reports about crimes happening within two miles of their homes. By going to crimemapping.com and typing in an address, anyone can find out when and where break-ins, assaults, loud parties and other crimes are occurring.
If a string of garage prowls was plaguing a neighborhood, and residents found out who hadn’t been hit yet, you can bet your snowblower — or theirs — that they’d take precautions.
They’d shut and lock their garage doors. Every night. They’d double-check the bulbs in their outdoor lights. And they’d make darn certain to glance out a window any time they were up during the night to do what people do when they get up during the night.
They’d put a damper on crime.
In Duluth, residents are doing just that — but not on a scale anywhere near large enough.
Only about 220 Duluthians have signed up to receive daily e-mails with reports about crimes happening within two miles of their homes. By going to crimemapping.com and typing in an address, anyone can find out when and where break-ins, assaults, loud parties and other crimes are occurring. The Duluth Police Department updates the information twice a day, at 4 p.m. and at 4 a.m.
“The more people who know what’s going on in their neighborhood, the more it helps us,” Duluth Police Chief Gordon Ramsay told the News Tribune editorial page yesterday. “If someone knows there have been burglaries in their area, they’re going to be more vigilant. Increased vigilance helps make the city a safer place.”
Duluth Mayor Don Ness has said that putting good, accurate information into the hands of law-abiding residents is the core of a strong community effort to fight crime. Too many other communities, fearful of tainting their positive image, go to great lengths to keep such information out of the public eye.
Easy access to crime information is a rare opportunity for Duluthians. Only 22 communities across the country are participating in CrimeMapping, a project of the Omega Group of San Diego.
Duluth was the second to sign on last summer and remains the only city in Minnesota or Wisconsin. A $10,000 grant from the Duluth-Superior Area Foundation made the participation possible.
Ramsay has a goal of 1,000 participants.
But we can do better than that. It’s easy to sign up. It’s free. And the information is invaluable. A clued-in community is a criminal’s worst nightmare.

Reader's view: WDSM treated Latto badly
What’s With WDSM?
I was waiting patiently the morning of Friday, March 27, to hear Lew Latto on his last day (“Time’s up in Duluth for Latto, Grussendorf,” March 26). In the meantime, I was listening to “America in the Morning” on WDSM-AM when a weather report came on and ended with, “This is 610 KDAL?” I was confused.
Then I saw the News Tribune and the article reporting that Lew Latto’s show was ended a day short and that he was told via e-mail, no less.
I anticipate a resounding reaction. Latto had the most listened-to talk show in the area, in my opinion. After decades of service he wasn’t even allowed to leave with a final farewell to all his dedicated listeners.
I think the wrong person was let go. It appears to me WDSM marketing manager Ron Stone should have been the one.
Lew left with dignity despite the apparent treatment he endured. I wish him well and hope he finds another local source that appreciates his services.

Tax Survey Finds Majority of Americans Fed-Up with State Taxes and Spending
State-Specific Results Show Distrust of Government and Disapproval of State Legislatures
Americans for Prosperity is reporting the results of a tax survey that was conducted nationwide and across eight key states. The survey found that citizens have had enough taxation, especially if those taxes are paid by the working poor and fund ineffective programs.
A few key findings:
* 57 percent of Americans believe their state’s taxes are too high.
* 64 percent said that they disapprove of their state legislature’s handling of budget issues
* 54 percent identified wasteful spending on programs that do not work as the most important issue in state budgeting
* 87 percent of respondents opposed tax increases that would be largely paid by people making less than $40,000 per year.
* The survey also finds that lower-income Americans oppose higher taxes, even if they are not forced to pay them. 59.6 percent of respondents earning under $30,000 per year rejected the idea of raising taxes on others.
* 62 percent distrusted that state elected officials would spend newly raised revenues wisely
The survey was conducted by Voter/Consumer Research, and is based on the responses of 1,008 registered voters nationwide, conducted by telephone between Jan. 27th and Jan. 28th of this year. The margin of error is +/- 3 percent.

To answer your question larry, NEVER! We did not have this type of crime with such frequency until about 2004. The DNT is now trying to convince us it is safe out there. While the DNT was writing these stories the crimes continued. One murder is to much.
Using your logic then I much believe Washington D.C. former Mayor Marion Barry when he said 'Outside of the killings, Washington has one of the lowest crime rates in the country,' Mayor Marion Barry, Washington , DC
According to the recent stats released our murder rate is worse than that of Brooklyn Dark, sorry, I mean Brooklyn Park, MN.

| Larry I remember talking to two tourists who were staying at the Holiday Inn downtown. They were waiting for a cab to take them to canal park. I said it is not that far why don't you walk. They said they were afraid to walk because of how some of the people on Superior street looked. To them a crime problem or not did not matter. They looked their environment over and decided it was not safe. Perhaps there was nothing to fear but to them it didn't matter the danger was real. Funny thing is my spouse and I were driving around the Northland all day and never though of locking our car doors till we drove back through Duluth. I locked my door and asked the spouse to do the same. I have started to avoid Duluth like the plague. They can go ahead and gouge us on our house taxes but that is all they are going to get. |

79793 - Tue Mar 31 17:57:58 2009 - [Duluth doesn't have a crime problem] By: larry |
I don't understand.
At what point would you be willing to concede that Duluth doesn't have a "crime problem"?
The point of that DNT story was to compare Duluth to similarly-sized cities in the region. If Duluth's crime-rates are comparable to Fargo's and Rochester's, how is it fair to single us out?
Of course we have crime here. But posting a report of a burglary in Lincoln Park doesn't prove that it's a Problem-- at least not moreso than it is in any other small city.
I might be missing the point of the argument. Enlighten me. |

79792 - Tue Mar 31 17:44:30 2009 - [Common sense should flourish] By: Dolla Bill |
NEW PREAMBLE TO THE CONSTITUTION
Somebody said this was probably the best e-mail he'd seen in a
long, long time. The following has been attributed to State Rep
Mitchell Aye from GA. This guy should run for President one day...
"We the sensible people of the United States, in an
attempt to help everyone get along, restore some
semblance of justice, avoid more riots, keep our
nation safe, promote positive behavior, and secure the
blessings of debt-free liberty to ourselves and our
great-great-great-grandchildren, hereby try one more
time to ordain and establish some common sense
guidelines for the terminally whiny, guilt ridden,
delusional, and other liberal bed-wetters. We hold
these truths to be self evident: that a whole lot of
people are confused by the Bill of Rights and are so
dim they require a Bill of NON-Rights."
ARTICLE I: You do not have the right to a new car, big
screen TV, or any other form of wealth. More power to
you if you can legally acquire them, but no one is guaranteeing
anything.
ARTICLE II: You do not have the right to never be
offended. This country is based on freedom, and that
means freedom for everyone -- not just you! You may
leave the room, turn the channel, express a different
opinion, etc.; but the world is full of idiots, and
probably always will be.
ARTICLE III: You do not have the right to be free from
harm. If you stick a screwdriver in your eye, learn to
be more careful, do not expect the tool manufacturer
to make you and all your relatives independently wealthy.
ARTICLE IV: You do not have the right to free food and
housing. Americans are the most charitable people to
be found, and will gladly help anyone in need, but we
are quickly growing weary of subsidizing generation
after generation of professional couch potatoes who
achieve nothing more than the creation of another
generation of professional couch potatoes. (This one
is my pet peeve...get an education and go
to work....don't expect everyone else to take care of you!)
ARTICLE V: You do not have the right to free health
care. That would be nice, but from the looks of public
housing, we're just not interested in public health care.
ARTICLE VI: You do not have the right to physically
harm other people. If you kidnap, rape, intentionally
maim, or kill someone, don't be surprised if the rest
of us want to see you fry in the electric chair.
ARTICLE VII: You do not have the right to the
possessions of others. If you rob, cheat, or coerce
away the goods or services of other citizens, don't be
surprised if the rest of us get together and lock you
away in a place where you still won't have the right
to a big screen color TV or a life of leisure.
ARTICLE VIII: You do not have the right to a job. All
of us sure want you to have a job, and will gladly
help you along in hard times, but we expect you to
take advantage of the opportunities of education and
vocational training laid before you to make yourself
useful. (AMEN!) (AMEN, AGAIN)
ARTICLE IX: You do not have the right to happiness.
Being an American means that you have the right to
PURSUE happiness, which by the way, is a lot easier if
you are unencumbered by an over abundance of idiotic
laws created by those of you who were confused by the
Bill of Rights.
ARTICLE X: This is an English speaking country. We
don't care where you are from, English is our
language. Learn it or go back to wherever you came
from! (lastly....)
ARTICLE XI: You do not have the right to change our
country's history or heritage. This country was
founded on the belief in one true God. And yet, you
are given the freedom to believe in any religion, any
faith, or no faith at all; with no fear of persecution.
The phrase IN GOD WE TRUST is part of our
heritage and history, and if you are uncomfortable with it,
TOUGH!!!! --- ("Do I hear an AMEN" )
If you agree, share this with a friend. No, you don't
have to, and nothing tragic will befall you if you
don't. I just think it's about time common sense is
allowed to flourish. Sensible people of the United
States speak out because if you do not, who will?

Cynic, I saw the same thing. Ness said that he found a fair settlement with the retirees and I waited for his magic. As usual, it will come at the expense of the taxpayer. Ness is really quite pathetic. Rhetoric, rhetoric, rhetoric and then he whispers into the taxpayers ear, bend over.
I just learned about this Tea party thing. Great idea! Send the message that this Obama, aka Chavez of the North, is running this country right into the ground. 3 months and the country is right on the verge of sinking. Print more money is his answer. No wonder Ness loves him so much. Democrats have no concept of finance, just spend, spend, tax tax.
I just had the chance to check out Stahlalinski's site. I laugh at Claire posting as Tony Ramone. Is it any wonder why nobody has ever inquired as to who this fraud really is? Everyone already knows. Good people move away from Duluth and leeches and mentally challenged like "C" move here and try to force feed an agenda of destructing the system.
To the blogger who has decided to not purchase things locally. I have been doing that for years. Pass the word. Don't give the AFSCME thieves anything that they don't outright steal as they do through the property taxes by means of their bought and paid for politicians like Ness, Gardner, Cuneo, Anderson, and Dilbert. |

Screwed By Scum, Thanks for the info. I am tuned in. It sure sounds just like DFL Duluth to me. When Jim Jones lured the young girl into the back of the bus and pulled down his pants and began raping her and kept telling her during the rape that he was doing it for her, all I could think of is our DFL. They rape us the same way every day and tell us that what they are doing is for us. I have been reading the DCB a lot since I found it a couple months back. DCB rocks!
Somebody posted to not spend money locally to starve AFSCME and I decided to give it a try. I just spent close to $4,000 on appliances and didn't pay a penny to the local coffers. Did it all online. I agree, time to take some action and vote with your wallet. The DFL crooks keep stealing. Don't feed them and save a lot of money. I saved 25% right off the top and i feel much better knowing that mayor Ness might one day have to actually make a tough decision. In the meantime, I will not be a part of feeding these DFL thieves.
Thanks Tony. I just sent part of my savings from not paying for DFL thieves in Duluth to you to keep this site thriving! Keep up the good work!

Abraham Lincoln, with the Emancipation Proclamation, ended chattel slavery in the United States of America.
Now there is an opportunity for our very capable President Obama to call on the workers of the world to unite in industrial unions to end capitalism worldwide. Locking out the capitalist class from industry, those people can join the workers in operating industry. Thus ending for all time a repeat of the present malaise we are now experiencing.

Get real CK. Duluth has a crime problem, most of which is caused by “imports”.
The Ministers of Kool-Aid a.k.a. Tourism Cartel, again is using its DFL Kool-Aid Propaganda Pusher, the Duluth News Tribune, to tell you it’s not light out during the day and not dark out at night. Remember Stahlalinski’s “Locals Commit the Majority of Crime”? The only stupider than dumb ass thing since is CK saying there’s no crime in Duluth.
CK, why don’t you go join former cartel suckup Herb Bergson in AZ and then flee together south across the border. Remember when Palucci and Goldfine told Bergson he had to run for office after the most embarrassing pathetic Mayor in Duluth history. What a toxic crock of DFL Cartel Kool-Aid.
Sadly, stupefied Duluthians allow this to go on and on.

79747 - Sat Mar 28 12:39:20 2009 - [Honest acknowledgment on crime absent] By: JBBP |
You wanna know about the "crime problem in Duluth," huh?
I don't know who the cops are that are telling CK there's no crime problem in Duluth...unless they say that if the criminals pulling off the crimes aren't getting caught, then there's no problem for them to commit them. The cops I know would most likely disagree with CK's statement.
Random thought: if Duluth apparently has no "crime problem," then why should we bother to hire more cops? As a matter of fact, how about we terminate some of their jobs, as a cost-saving measure? Apparently, the city doesn't need so many, if you take CK's comments seriously.
This community does indeed have a crime problem. But it's not all because of the actions of grown-up criminals. Alot of crimes are being committed by juveniles, regardless of the color of their skin.
When kids hit the age of 16, they are no longer subject to a curfew. When they hit 16, they are no longer mandated to go to school. And even if they're not 16, the schools have an open lunch policy...they can take off and eat elsewhere, if they choose. The 9th graders aren't supposed to leave school grounds, but they do so all the time.
Another random thought: If the students are allowed to leave the school during lunch hour, why the push, every year, for their parents to sign up to see if their kids qualify for free or reduced lunch? How many kids whose parents signed up and qualified are going elsewhere, like to Mickey D's, BK, or Taco John's?
Yet another random thought: Alot of these kids get their driver's licenses and drive to school. This causes a parking issue, and increases traffic congestion, among other problems inherant to allowing kids to drive, anyway. We are paying alot of money for kids to be transported to school via the bus. Why don't we encourage them to use the transportation provided for them, for what should be obvious reasons?
Whether or not CK chooses to admit it, there has been an influx of people in Duluth who don't have jobs, and are more than very likely here because a relative/associate is on the system and can/will provide them with a place to stay. (We have a booming meth market, as evidenced by the fact that the county spends alot on advertising "211," a number one can call when trying to deal with meth problems.) Many of these individuals don't 'update' their driver's licenses/ID cards to identify themselves as Duluth residents. They slip through the cracks, on purpose.
Does the color of one's skin matter that much when one thinks of a crime problem? Not really...for example, the Mafia of old had quite a few white folks amongst its ranks, if I remember correctly. Besides, it's not a race issue, it's more a cultural issue- a mindset. Most of the criminals I've dealt with or heard about in my life- be they white, black, Native, rich or poor- have somehow either been convinced or have convinced themselves that they are entitled to be assholes, whether out of self-pity, greed, or by copping a negative stereotypical role that they think wields power for them. Race not only isn't an excuse for committing crime, it's not a qualifier, either.
When people cry that it's racist to actually admit that there seems to be an inordinate number of ANY group of people of ANY skin color committing crimes, it reminds me of what I can describe as a form of quasi-protectionism, similar to parents who say,"What- my kid? Oh, no, my kid would NEVER do anything wrong, and if he/she did, then YOU must have made him/her do it!" Very disengenuous and patronizing. This sort of mindset is unfair in that it discourages law-abiding members of a class/group to scrutinize elements contributing to a 'crime problem' in order to arrive at realistic and productive solutions towards resolving these issues.
If a group of people don't like having a negative stereotype attached to them they need to work on why the stereotype exists in the first place by courageously and honestly ACKNOWLEDGING the reasons why it's been attached...without using the self-pity or victim line. That's gotten old. They then need to openly hold people accountable who are promoting/securing/using the stereotype via their actions. This is not a racist attitude.
Thank you. |

79744 - Sat Mar 28 10:00:53 2009 - [Labeling makes some feel superior] By: Dead Inside |
| Anyone with at least 2 brain cells to rub together knows for a bald-faced fact that everyone, everywhere in this world, is "racist" to one degree or another. Some hide it better than others. The same thing applies for buzzwords like "mysogny", "violent", "abusive", etc. They are ALL a part of the human condition. People are people, everywhere around the world. The labeling of people comes out of a need to feel superior over someone else. None of us are immune to it. Until people the world over start to become more enlightened, I consider it my task to educate the ill informed. My work is cut out for me as the greater majority of people on the earth love to remain ignorant. There's my little contribution to labeling. I am not immune to it either, however, I know what it is all about and accept it for what it is. If more of you thought outside the box, perhaps one day you may join me on the mountain top to observe and ponder the actions and words of the unenlightened, unwashed masses. |

| Victim in Waiting, you are clearly a racist, just look at your words. Race baiting clear and simple. If DCB is used as an example, Duluth is a racist city ! JWB your comparison of the wonderful inauguration in Washington DC and the tragedy in New Orleans is invalid. What happened in New Orleans was natural disaster compounded by the incompetence of Bush / Cheney along with a history of racism, neglect, and class bias contributed to the fiasco in New Orleans. Did you know that there was not one arrest in Washington DC during the inauguration ? Millions gathered to welcome hope and embrace change in our country. Big Iron, I'm flattered by the use of the term "white female privilege", NOT ! You are clearly intimidated by strong women who dare express themselves. Your misogynist views are apparent. Concerning the perception that there may be a "crime problem" in Duluth. I spoke to some of my friends in the police department and like the DNT reported there is NO crime problem in Duluth. This irrational obsession with a "crime problem" is nothing more than thinly veiled racism. |

A beautiful fairy appeared one day to a destitute refugee outside a Maryland immigration office.
Good man,' the fairy said, 'I've been sent here by President Obama and told to grant you three wishes, since you just arrived in the United States with your wife and three children.
The man told the fairy. 'Well, where I come from we don't have good teeth, so I want new teeth, maybe a lot of gold in them.
The fairy looked at the man's almost toothless grin and -- PING! -- He had a brand new shining set of gold teeth in his mouth!
What else?' asked the fairy, 'two more to go?
The refugee claimant now got bolder.
I need a big house with a three car garage in Annapolis on the water with eight bedrooms for my family and the rest of my relatives who still live in my country. I want to bring them all over here and -- PING! - In the distance there could be seen a beautiful mansion with a three car garage, a long driveway, a walkout patio with a BBQ in an upscale neighborhood overlooking the bay.
One more wish', said the fairy, waving her wand. Yes, one more wish. I want to be like an American with American clothes instead of these torn clothes, and a baseball cap instead of this turban. And I want to have white skin like Americans. And -- PING! - The man was transformed, wearing worn out jeans, a Baltimore Orioles T-shirt and a baseball cap. He had his bad teeth back and the mansion had disappeared from the horizon.
What happened to my new teeth?' he wailed. Where is my new house?
The fairy said 'Tough luck, Mac, Now that you are a White American, you have to fend for yourself.
And she disappeared! |

79726 - Fri Mar 27 12:17:19 2009 - [Absolute slap in the face] By: Seth |
From www.lewlatto.com
THANK YOU!
This is a sad day for me. Instead of hosting my final radio show, I must instead try to explain the details of my dismissal. Before I do that, however, I would like to thank everybody for your wonderful support!
I have spent hours and hours these past two weeks answering a multitude of e-mails. It is proof to me of the extended radio family which we all have been a part of. Your kind words have been so gratifying!
It was never my intent to go public with my dismissal, however after I learned in an e-mail from Ron Stone, the market manager for WDSM and five other local radio stations, that he had canceled my final broadcast today, I had no choice. I consider his action an attack on my integrity. I had assured Mr. Stone that I would not discuss my situation on the radio show. I had not, as you all know, and would not have done so on my final broadcast! Not being on-the-air today means I cannot personally say "goodbye" to the thousands of listeners who tune in daily.
Many of you have asked me why Mr. Stone canceled my show. I cannot give a logical reason. WDSM last fall had the best ratings the station has ever had in its current format. My ratings have always been strong and as a radio station owner: never mess with success! The many sponsors who have been on my show for years brought more revenue to WDSM than I was costing the station. Perhaps I am not enough of a "patriot" for Mr. Stone. Only he can answer that!
I have no immediate future plans, except to relax for a while. If Midwest Communications would like me to return to WDSM after Mr. Stone is gone, I would certainly consider it.
Should any other opportunity present itself, I will post my future plans here on my web site.
Thank you again for your wonderful support!
Lew
My comments:
This was a bullshit move by Stone, to not allow Latto to finish out this run with the final show. He’s in the Minnesota Broadcasters Hall of Fame and has been on the radio for decades. And this is how you treat somebody? C’mon.
What an absolute slap in the face. I’m not going to start any campaign, but I’m done with Midwest Communications. Done with my advertising dollars and done patronizing anyone who advertises on Midwest. Anyone who treats someone like shit is NOT going to get my business. Stone, you f----d up on this one, you idiot.

Midwest people must be ashamed to say they work for a company mis-managed by such an inferiority-complexed lightweight as Ron Stone, especially now that he intentionally cheated Latto out of his farewell day on the air. Stone brings being an DELETED to a new low.

Reader's view: Not everyone is subject to the Duluth sales tax
I am angry I was nearly made to pay a Duluth city sales tax recently when I
didn’t owe it. When I purchased a new dishwasher at Sears, I was asked if I lived inside or outside the city limits of Duluth. My mailing address is “Duluth,” but I actually live in Duluth Township. The sales clerk explained that because the dishwasher was being delivered to my home, outside of the city limits, I would not be charged the additional 1 percent city sales tax.
That got me to thinking. I did a little research by phone and online and now I know a few things to watch for.
If you buy something in Duluth and take possession of it, you are subject to the
1 percent city sales tax.
If you buy something in Duluth or anywhere else and have it delivered to your home or business where it will be used outside Duluth city limits, you are not subject to the tax.
All utilities, including phone, garbage, electricity, gas (propane) and cable, are not subject to the tax if provided to a home or business that is not within the city limits of Duluth.
Service and repair calls performed outside of the city limits also are exempt.
From now on I will be checking all my utility bills and watching the tax on items delivered to my home. So should my neighbors who live or own a business in Rice Lake, Canosia, Lakewood, Duluth or other nearby townships.
I would be happy to buy a Duluth Public Library card with my newly found tax savings (Our view: “Duluthians pay for library services, visitors can, too,” March 13).

Thank You JBBP, you speak the TRUTH!
Those who complain about providing poverty level assistance (welfare) and food stamps to those in need should listen up.
It's time we think about the 'true' shysters and racketeers who are pulling this city and country down to new depths.

79708 - Thu Mar 26 18:36:18 2009 - [Liberal race spinning called out] By: victim in waiting |
I thought C K was trying to being funny with those remarks. Who made it a race issue? Do we even know what race the robbers were? If that is the attitude of C K we have a problem. What an ignorant attitude! There is no denying the robbers were looking for drugs and committed a serious crime. Am I supposed to accept that because someone has a propensity to commit crimes?
Looking at the FBI's detailed uniformed crime reports: www.fbi.gov Blacks make up 13.9% of the U.S. Population, yet commit 51.2% of all violent crime in America. Its even worse than it seems, if you subtract those that are 'in' prison - those that are too young/old to commit crime, you're basically left with 6% of the American population committing over 50% of the violent crime. Why is this happening?
Don't blame Whitey or racism, after all, we see this same FERAL behavior in Black run countries a.la Zimbabwe and Haiti where Whitey ain't around. It would seem that Blacks are prone to violence, unless you can offer a better explanation for such criminal behavior. |

C K,
It's nice to see you join the discussion. Let's have coffee one of these days when you are free.
In the meantime, can you explain to me your take on the disproportionate number of black males in US prisons, compared to our population of 13.5% black Americans? This is where in your words, “ethnocentric white male bias” is being fueled. Do you agree?

79705 - Thu Mar 26 16:37:36 2009 - [Kool-Aid or "White Male Bias"] By: C K |
Victim in Waiting, you ask: "Do I have the wrong perception of this latest incident"
Yes you do. As the latest series of article in the DNT proved, Duluth does not have a crime problem. Thanks to the serious indepth reporting at the DNT, it was once again proven that Duluth is a wonderful place to live. As the DNT reported, crime rates have not risen in the past 4 years, they have remained steady, so there you see, there is no crime problem in Duluth.
Your perception that there may be a crime problem in Duluth, is a result of your ethnocentric white male bias. Your judgement is clouded by "white privledge". This perception of a crime problem is a manifestation of latent racism. Racial biases, fear of the unknown, fear of "others" have led to the perception a crime problem. Once we become a more open and welcoming community, social conflict and bias will become a thing of the past. Further community resources need to be invested to address this serious issue, if anything we need to do it for our children. |

It is absolutely terrible, dire news in the Fargo-Moorhead area. I hope everything goes okay for those folks and they get all the help that they need.
I'm also looking forward to going home tonight to watch CNN about all the folks being housed in the Fargo-dome, plucked off their roofs, bitchin' at President Bush, killing and stealing from each other, looting, pillaging, fraud with the benefit debit cards, etc.
Oops, I'm sorry. I forgot Bush wasn't President anymore and Fargo is not in the DFL-entitlement area of New Orleans. I digress. |

Man robbed near Duluth's Midtowne Manor
Two assailants robbed a man near Midtowne Manor Wednesday evening.
According to the Duluth Police Department, a man was walking on the 2000 block of West Third Street around 8:50 p.m. when the two assailants approached him and asked if he had any marijuana. When he said he didn’t, the pair began hitting him, knocked him down, and took his wallet, cell phone and medications. The man was treated for injuries on his forehead and lip.
The victim was not able to identify his attackers |

Right now it looks like 2 Tea Parties, both on April 15th. Duluth, 12 to 1, or there abouts; behind the DECC. Superior, Tower at 14th, the old Post Office, 12 to 1 or so. The details should firm up soon. Be there at one or the other.
MODERATOR: Lester P, Geez, I wonder why the media has yet to mention anything about the Tea Parties. I know of a few people who will be at the Capitol for this fine event. Once again, suppression of freedoms of opposing opinions is what liberals, DFLers, and Regressive Action Terrorists are all about. |
