"I can not believe some residents of Duluth would look at people living on Park Point different. Park Point has been part of Duluth, since Duluth started as a city. Just because many of the people living on Park Point did not want a hotel built on the point does not make us bad people. What if someone wanted to place a hotel on 4th and 26 ave east, zoning laws prohibit due to that neighborhood being zoned residental. The same as for Park Point. It is mainly residents living there. Park Point is a neighborhood like Chester Park, London Road and Woodland.

When it come down to it, we are like the rest of Duluthians. We care about our neighborhood."

Park Pinters missed the point of peoples annoyance. Red below:

"Every bleeping area in Duluth, from Hunters Park, to London Road, To Skyline Parkway, to Lakeside, to Kenwood, have been over run with commercial business, welfare housing, group homes, half-way houses etc, but it's always "hands off Park Point"?

When citizens in the above mentioned area's complain, the response from the City is, tough shit folks!

Usually, not always, but usually, when Park Pointers complain, they get their way!"

84469 - Thu Jul 15 00:38:00 2010 - [Voter ID will reduce DFL voter fraud] By: JBBP
Personally, I would not want to stay in a hotel on Park Point. I'm not even that nuts about going to the beach down there. I guess it's okay, but it's a long slow drive and having to stop for the bridge going up and down irritates me, especially when it's hot out. I'm only speaking for myself. The part where it's a neighborhood like any other or an environmental treasure doesn't make all that much difference, to my perspective...the one thing that would concern me about having a big hotel on the Point would be safety issues. It would probably need its own fire, police and ambulance service- even a clinic- because if you're trying to get into town or on the Point in a hurry, that bridge can be a real drag. I have enough problems.

The voter ID thing...some folks may not like this notion, BUT- it ought to be required. If you're a college kid who is only here in Duluth while going to college, get yourself an absentee ballot from wherever you're from and vote that way. Once you graduate, and if you actually decide to stay here(with proof- you have a job, a place to live, and you pay your bills), then go ahead and register yourself as a permanent resident of Duluth. After that, your ID will be acceptable for voting in our local elections. College kids from out of town should indeed have a right to vote- in the precinct they hail from. Not here. Not until they make it totally official that they will be staying here. It isn't fair to the people who actually live and work here to have people without a true and demonstrated investment(other than college tuition) casting votes that will have no real long-term effect on their own lives/livelihoods. If they want to campaign or whatever, fine- that's a freedom of speech issue. But vote in municipal elections when they aren't even from here and are here for their college education only? Nope. It's not right.

As far as other segments of the population having a tough time getting IDs...get real. If you can't land long enough to establish some sort of residency(unless you're in the military or have some other realy good reason- not an excuse), you are probably someone who needs to get your act together before you are granted the responsibility of voting, anyway.

By the way, most of the elderly people I know are very responsible about having IDs. Even those who are disabled make sure they have them because people can't even cash a check without one. So if you can't cash a check without your ID, then why in the hell should it be even remotely okay to vote in an election? Voting isn't just a right. It's a responsibility that should be undertaken only by those who can prove that they are... responsible.

Years ago, I found myself having to go on welfare to survive. I had kids to take care of. I was(and still am) thankful to the taxpayers for helping me through that very tough time, and I hope that I will eventually pay enough into the system to make up for the government's covering my back. But guess what I needed before I could get financial assistance?

You guessed it...an ID!!!!!

So welfare recipients need IDs and thus are able to vote, if they choose to do so.

Thank you.

84461 - Tue Jul 13 19:28:11 2010 - [Park Point Arrogance] By: Chester Park
I agree with the one poster that thinks Park Point people are special. I lived down there when I was young and the rent was high, the bridge was always up, and the girls dressed in a unsavory manner. The cost of living in a home on the lakeside was even scarier.

Now, 25 1/2 years later, I bet rent is high still, the bridge don't go up as much due to shipping traffic, and I miss those girls. Those dang residents also have to pay high taxes, haha. They are special and we should cut them off.

Let us start by selling the Lift Bridge to the city in Arizona that brought the famous London Bridge. Then let us give Park Pointers rations for one week, until Cheeseland takes them in as political refugees and builds a new bridge into their land. Then we rid the "we are better than you people".

84441 - Mon Jul 12 21:47:40 2010 - [DFL Duluth is becoming an urban dump] By: Fresh Duluth
http://www.city-data.com/forum/minneapolis-st-paul/692675-twin-cities-vs-duluth-3.html

As someone who's spent most of my life bounced around between both downtowns, I have this to offer: Downtown Minneapolis, at least within the last decade, is for the rich, and especially rich people with no kids. There's plenty of panhandlers, street people, etc., but in Duluth, even though it's smaller, there is a much greater sense of poverty and urban blight - you are pretty much shielded from kids downtown in Minneapolis (living there) while in Duluth you have lots of poor people with kids living downtown. While many apartment buildings in downtown Minneapolis are well over $1000 a month, downtown Duluth high rises (Tri Towers, King Manor, Gateway Towers, San Marcos; it's all on bowmanproperties.com or center city housing) are almost all Section 8, which unfortunately has drawn people from cities like Minneapolis, Milwaukee, Kansas City; larger urban areas where the wait list for free housing is nearly 8-10 years; they get right in here and just spend one night listening to the police calls - the high rises that were intended for senior citizens on a fixed income have been taken over by drug dealers, pimps, just a real lowlife/predator element that was not here a decade ago. The main reason Duluth has become a destination is the FREE HOUSING that is not available in Minneapolis any more.

I love Duluth, but I do not see the same influx of very well educated professionals here that I would see in Minneapolis - this is no longer a place where we are getting a lot of wealth coming in, and our schools are reflecting that. In two years, Central High School will be gone, leaving us with only two high schools (East and Denfeld; boundary being the east-west split on 6th Ave E)...our problem downtown is that there was a real lack of proactive and forward thinking people like there has been in Minneapolis to create an artsy, fun, cultural and basically an energetic, clean downtown where you would feel okay with your mother/sister/wife/etc walking around alone. Duluth is becoming sketchy - and again its economics - we are getting all the people who can no longer afford Minneapolis or other large cities and will definitely say yes to Duluth so long as they get free housing, easy local women to live off of and drive her car around, and do anything except come here to work. The irony is that people still have a problem with the gay pride events (mainly people who have much higher levels of education, income and living standards than those who complain about them; they usually don't have kids nor do they cause any problems in the city) but these same complainers say nothing about our 'street pharmacists' and convicted felons who are here to get local women pregnant and stick them with the responsibility of raising (sometimes 5 different kids with 5 different baby daddys)...it's just sad to see this decline in Duluth because it almost cements the future here. Who wants to invest in a city like this? At least in Minneapolis you have a definite track of wealth coming in and things happening. Not so in Duluth. We are going from a quaint Great Lakes community to an urban dump and a place for Illinois felons to run away from 'three strikes' convictions.

Richard M., for a long time I believed "Labor World" Larry was a mand of character. I've known him for over 48 years as former neighbors.

It was recently that I learned he dodged the draft. For all these years in the Union I thought he was tough as nails and supported what was right. Only to find out when the country needed him, he pussed out. All along Larry was front and center at all the union rallies, all the pickets and all the negotiations standing tough and strong for us workers.

When I found out he dodged the draft I lost all respect for him. He fooled many by his actions. It is not hard to stand front and center and raise hell when you know the union brothers and sisters have your back. that is easy.

The hard part is answering the call to duty when your draft number comes up. Would you agree?

How much do you want for this dump, Starfire?

STARFIRE: Big Iron, can't help you with that one. You will have to talk to Tony about that proposition. I believe that the last inquiry resulted in the asking price being in the neighborhood of $10,000 USD. That is peanuts for the big DFL DFD PAC machine that pumped over $130,000.00 into local elections awhile back to buy a handful of DFL DFD Assclowns. It does not surprise me that the DFD PAC would consider putting some of its extortion money to good use by trying to buy the DCB. After being exposed for the extortion racket that the DFD is for the past couple years, it is about time that one of you Assclowns had the brilliant idea to consider damage control. Doesn't matter to me as I have a life outside the DCB, folding lots of mom's underwear, but I would sure miss moderating all you DFD Assclowns crying and pissing and moaning each and every day and night here.

84426 - Sat Jul 10 19:36:13 2010 - [Thanks to DPD, real Duluth heroes] By: Me Again
On Friday I saw a DPD squad car at Plaza Shopping Center parked in such a way that two handicapped parking spaces were being used. I could certainly understand this if there was an emergency situation. I saw the officer walk into Super One, maybe getting doughnuts, maybe going to process a shoplifter. I do not know why he was there, but blocking two spaces seemed wrong to me. In spite of this, I say thank you to the members of the DPD for their efforts on our behalf. Thank you.

STARFIRE: Me Again, the DPD probably had to park that way because the DFD had parked the ladder truck right in front as usual with a hungry crew with the munchies. The DFD crew way probably tired after all 7 had the grueling task of watching the one DFDer mow the lawn at the fire hall again. Poor guys!

84424 - Sat Jul 10 02:42:41 2010 - [Tougher enforcement of traffic laws] By: Duluth Driver
To any police officers out there- Is passing on the right side of a vehicle that is stopped to make a left hand turn still illegal if the stopped vehicle does not have a turn lane? Did the law change since I took driver's ed some 20 years ago?
I was driving down Superior Street, and stopped to make a left turn. The area I was in did not have turn lanes. An older woman stopped in opposing traffic, opposite of me, to make a left hand turn. We were each about to make our turns when we were both passed by multiple cars on the right sides. If either of us had gone, we would have turned in front of passing cars which were blinded by the other car.

I was somewhat irritated by the situation, until I looked in the mirror after this mess cleared, and saw a DPD squad car. I pulled over after making my turn, and watched the police officer go on his merry way, not paying any attention to the situation, and not stopping any motorists that I believed were passing illegally and nearly causing traffic accidents.

There needs to be tougher enforcement of traffic laws in our city. People also need to follow the rules. Also, people should be required to relearn a few things, like what to do at a four way stop sign. We have some very poor drivers in our city, I am beginning to think that I am playing Russian Roullette my venturing out on our streets. It is disheartening to watch our paid enforcers of the rules turn a blind eye to these situations when they should be enforcing all of our laws.

Well "Labor World" Larry, your a yellow belly SON OF A BITCH for being a draft dodger. Myself and many others served with honor and fought for our freedoms and the freedoms of others. You ran when your draft number came up. You ran north.

The proposed hotel on the point would be welcomed by us. We need to have more businesses in the city to make sure essential public safety is not compromised.

This hotel on the point would be another source of revenue for the city and keep the fire department operating as usual. A first class fire response needs money to operate. Put aside all the environmental garbage Slade is trying to bring up and do it. We have a beautiful city and lets not keep it to ourselves. Spread the wealth

Where does the dfd-rube handle thats been attached to my moniker come from? Also, when I post that dodge st. is a union guy and you change it, you seem to be the testy ones, can't face the truth? I am not afraid to tell you my background, work at dfd, live in the city, kids in the 709 district, what more,,you just keep telling everyone how to do it ,,I am doing it......

STARFIRE: Crusty, I understand you have been in a bad mood today. Regarding the handle, we like to keep everyone straight around here so that there is no confusion. So you are known in DCB circles as DFD Rube and we all think that the name is perfect for you. Don't you agree? If it acts like a rube, talks like a rube and is employed as a rube at DFD, well...... you get the picture don't you? Regarding modifications which you claim have occurred, the potty mouth that you use sometimes will not be tolerated. Secondly, it appears that your use of English language is at times, quite limited and thus, must be corrected so that a casual reader might have a chance to understand what you are actually trying to say. We here at DCB are always striving to help out our DFD heroes to get their message out as best as possible. I will say that your limitiations in written English language do help explain your employment at DFD, where no higher education is required to get in on the $82,000 hosing salary plus benefits.

NATURE OF INCIDENT: Counterfeit Money
CASE NO.: 10314091
INCIDENT DATE :07/01/2010
INCIDENT TIME: 6:26 PM
INCIDENT LOCATION: Duluth
SUBJECT: Police Advise of Counterfeit bills being passed
BY: Officer Brad Wick, Information Coordinator

The Duluth Police Department would like to alert area businesses and citizens of counterfeit $100 bills being passed locally. In the past week there have been a number of reports to police involving the counterfeit $100 bills. Police continue the investigation into these reports.

The counterfeit $100 bills passed are of good quality and actually made from real U.S. $5 bills. Because of this, the counterfeit bills look and feel like real $100 bills and can be easily mistaken without close examination. The counterfeit bill still has two recognizable security features from the $5 bill. If you hold up a real $100 bill to the light, you should see a watermark portrait of Benjamin Franklin to one side of the bill and "USA100" printed in the bill's security thread. The counterfeit $100 bills being passed still have security features from a $5 bill, a watermark portrait of Abraham Lincoln to one side and "USAFIVE" printed on the security thread.

A caution to area merchants, counterfeit detection pens are ineffective in recognizing these counterfeit bills. It is suggested that merchants check for the correct watermarks and embedded security threads. Police ask everyone to carefully examine all U.S. currency in denominations of at least twenty dollars or larger that they receive.

If you receive what you believe is a counterfeit $100 bill, please call 911.

Reader's view: Park Point hotel economics don’t add up

"Plug the city’s deficit with a hotel? “It’s like bailing the Titanic with a teaspoon,” said a former city of Duluth department head. He was talking about property tax income from a new Park Point hotel. A developer wants to take over half a block of residential property three blocks past the Aerial Lift Bridge and build a 53-room hotel.

The developer claims the project would generate $120,000 every year for city coffers. But that doesn’t reflect the added costs the hotel could create for the city. How much extra policing would be required for a hotel off the beaten path? Would the project strain the sewer on Park Point to its breaking point? And what about revenue lost to the city as a result of the project? Few people would want to buy a home across the street from a busy hotel. What happens when the assessed value of neighboring homes drops and property tax revenues drop, too?

Building quality residences on the same lot could generate $60,000 in property taxes and improve the quality of the neighborhood.

The City Council will vote Monday whether to rezone this longtime residential block to suit the plans of one developer. Not only would a yes vote be bad public policy, the economics just don’t add up."

I see "Tree Hugger" Andrew Slade is back in the public eye. You remember Andrew, don't you? He was the guy who had a cushy job, thanks to contributions from Minnesota Power, at the Great Lakes Aquarium. He then turned on Minnesota Power by publicly attacking them for building a power line in Wisconsin. Talk about biting the hand that feeds you. Well, he ended up leaving the Aquarium under less than friendly terms.

What the hell did he expect, the little twerp!

Talk about "biting the hand that feeds you"!!!!

Mr. Anonymous, When you observed the 8 firefighters at our headquarters firehall mowing the grass, you should have stayed longer then the redlight on Mesaba or 1st would allow. You would have seen us taking turns pulling the mower back up the hill.

We were sharing the duties of mowing that dangerous hill.
I'm starting to think that most on this BS blog have no idea of what firefighters do on a 24 hr shift. Your perception is tainted by what a few neo-cons on this blog write.

I don't know where you get your figures for our salary's posted on this site, but we don't make $82,000 per year thats for sure. Many of us are in the mid 70"s and earn ever bit. Look at most business owners salaries and we don't even come close. I'll bet most business owners make over $100,000 per year, and they don't even risk their lives every day.

So get off and stay the hell off our backs.

Q: How many DFDers does it take to cut grass at the downtown hall?

A: 8

Not sure why but I saw 2 groups of 4 standing with only 1 cutting grass by having a rope hooked to a lawn mower pulling it up and down the hill. At least they were sleeping as some here say but why are we paying them as kids looking for summer jobs would be a lot better as we would have to pay for 8 guys standing there.

STARFIRE: Anonymous, I can't believe it. One DFDer was actually doing something? The 7 doing nothing is no surprise, but 1 actually doing something is hard to believe. Someone needs to set this 1 DFDer straight about how things work at DFD.

Sounds to me like Maywood, CA's problems weren't created as much by some outsiders, like that Roger Hedgecock article that mp was so gracious to share with us all would like us all to believe, but instead, from the same old inept government hiring practices, especially in their police department. This is at least the second city in California to fall due to government corruption. Right from Wikipedia and without all the spin:

In an unprecedented move among California cities, on July 1, 2010, the city laid off all its employees, including its entire Police Department. With a large budget deficit, and no longer able to obtain insurance, the Maywood City Council stated it was left with no other option but to adopt this plan. The City of Maywood lost its workers compensation and commercial insurance due to its claims history over the last five years as reflected in 2005-2010 Loss Summary Statements, especially given its history of lawsuits that mainly involved the Police Department. The Maywood Police Department had allegedly developed a reputation for hiring officers that had been terminated from other Police agencies for professional misconduct or other legal issues.

Though Maywood officials stopped short of filing for bankruptcy or even giving up the city's municipal status, the city still faces daunting problems. The City of Maywood is now unable to administer a traditional staff. From now on, the Los Angeles County Sheriff's Department will patrol the streets, while the neighboring City of Bell, will be compensated to oversee other functions, such as staffing City Hall.

It is time to start facing the reality that corruption, especially government, has been bred right here in the U.S., right now and it is causing the system to implode. When one police officer in California can retire with a $200,000.00 annual pension worth over $4,000,000.00, we need look no further for corruption than right here. And some wonder why California is broke!

Charles Bolden, a retired United States Marines Corps major-general and former astronaut, said in an interview with al-Jazeera that Nasa was not only a space exploration agency but also an "Earth improvement agency".

Mr Bolden said: "When I became the Nasa administrator, he "Mr Obama

Here is the story of Maywood, Mexico, California or is it Duluth?

http://www.humanevents.com/article.php?id=37671

Boasting a population that is 97% Hispanic, more than half foreign born, and 40% illegal, the Los Angeles County, Calif., incorporated city of Maywood has achieved the Reconquista goal. It is now as lawless and chaotic as any place in Mexico. Maywood is a warning to every city and town in America.

The Maywood City Council announced this week that after years of radical policies, corruption and scandal, the city was broke and all city employees would be laid off and essential city services contracted out to neighboring cities or to L.A. County government.

How did this happen? Until recently, Maywood was the model for "brown power" politics.

Maywood was the first California city with an elected Hispanic City Council, one of the first "sanctuary" cities for illegal aliens, the first city to pass a resolution calling for a boycott of Arizona after that state passed a law to enforce federal immigration laws, the first California city to order its police department not to enforce state laws requiring drivers to have licenses to drive, the first American city to call on Congress to grant amnesty to all illegals.

Council meetings were conducted in Spanish. Maywood was the leader in the peaceful, democratic achievement of the La Raza goal to take power in the U.S.

The City of Maywood started out quite differently. Back after World War II, Maywood was a booming blue-collar town with good jobs, a multi-ethnic suburb of Los Angeles.

On the 25th anniversary in 1949 of Maywood's incorporation as a city, the town celebrated with a beard-growing contest, a rodeo, and wrestling matches in City Park. Chrysler operated an assembly plant there until 1971.

But the early 1970s saw these industrial jobs in aerospace, auto and furniture manufacturing, and food processing evaporate under the pressure of higher taxes, increased local and state regulation, and the attraction of cheaper land and cheaper labor elsewhere.

The multi-ethnic Maywood of the post-war years was transformed in the ’80s and ’90s by wave after wave of Hispanic immigrants, many of them illegal.

In August 2006, a "Save Our State" anti-illegal immigration rally in Maywood drew hundreds of protesters—but a larger number of defenders of illegal immigration. The pro-illegal protesters carried signs which read "We are Indigenous ! The ONLY owners of this Continent!" and "Racist Pilgrims Go Home" and "All Europeans are Illegal Here."

According to newspaper reports at the time, objectors to illegal aliens were subject to physical attacks. A 70-year-old man was "slashed," a woman attacked, and cars vandalized. Pro-illegal demonstrators raised the Mexican flag at the U.S. Post Office.

The illegal population and their sympathizers became increasingly radicalized. Elections to the City Council saw "assimilationist" incumbent Hispanic council members ousted by La Raza supporting radical challengers.

For years, the Maywood City Council authorized police checkpoints to stop drunk driving. Drivers without licenses had their cars impounded. Illegals in California cannot get drivers licenses. By 2005, the number of such impounds were in the hundreds. A community campaign was launched forcing the City Council to suspend the checkpoints.

Cars were still being impounded whenever a police traffic-violation stop resulted in a driver without a license. Felipe Aguirre, a community activist with Comite Pro-Uno, an "immigration service center," coordinated a new campaign against any impounds. He was elected in 2005 to the City Council. He is the mayor of Maywood today.

Aguirre and a new majority of the council dismantled the Traffic Department. Illegals were given overnight-parking permits and impounds stopped. You didn't need a license to drive in Maywood. The Los Angeles Times wrote glowingly of this "progress" in a story entitled "Welcome to Maywood, Where Roads Open Up For Immigrants".

The Maywood Police Department was restructured by the new council. A new chief and new officers were hired. Later it turned out that many of the new officers had previously been fired from other law enforcement agencies for a variety of infractions. The Maywood P.D. was known as the "Department of Second Chances."

Among those hired was a former L.A. Sheriff's deputy terminated for abusing jail inmates; a former LAPD officer fired for intimidating a witness; and an ex-Huntington Park officer charged with negligently discharging a handgun and driving drunk.

Even the L.A. Times called the Maywood Police Department a "haven for misfit cops." Their story alleged that a veteran officer was extorting sex from relatives of a criminal fugitive; that another officer tried to run over the president of the Maywood Police Commission; and that another officer has impregnated a teenage police-explorer scout.

Charges of corruption and favoritism led to one recall of city council members and threats of more recalls are heard to this day.

Maywood is represented in the state Senate by Democrat "One Bill" Gil Cedillo. He earned the nickname by introducing every year in the state legislature a bill to grant drivers licenses to illegals. Maywood is represented in Congress by Democrat Lucille Roybal-Allard, a staunch advocate of amnesty for illegals.

Today, Maywood is broke. Its police department dismantled along with all other city departments and personnel. Only the city council remains and a city manager to manage the contracts with other agencies for city services in Maywood.

Maywood is the warning of what happens when illegal immigrants, resisting assimilation as Americans, bring with their growing numbers the corruption and the radical politics of their home countries. Add the radical home-grown anti-Americanism of Hispanic "leaders" and groups like La Raza and you get schools where learning is replaced with indoctrination, business and jobs replaced by welfare and gangs, and a poisonous stew of entitlement politics.

In too many American communities, this sad tale is all too familiar.

INCIDENT LOCATION: Duluth Area
SUBJECT: Duluth Police Seek Publics help in Identifying Residential Burglars
BY: Lieutenant Kerry Kolodge, (218) 730-5639

The Duluth Police Department is asking for the public’s help in identifying residential burglars who may be removing stolen property from homes. Recent trends show that large flat screen televisions, personal computers, laptops, Play Station and X-Box video systems are being targeted by residential burglars. In late May, a London Road residence was entered and a 30-inch television, telescope and a vehicle were taken. On June 23rd, a Lincoln Park residence was burglarized, and a 42-inch television, Dell computer, X-Box and Sony stereo were taken. On June 25th, a Morgan Park residence was burglarized, and a 55-inch television, was taken.

The Police Department is asking residents to get to know their neighbors, and to keep a watchful eye not only on their own homes, but their neighbor’s homes as well. If someone they don’t recognize as their neighbor comes out of their neighbor’s home with a large television, computer or video game system, they are strongly encouraged to call 911 and report the incident. If a vehicle is involved, police ask the caller to get the license plate number, make and color of the vehicle.

If a person is seen carrying large items, such as a large flat screen television out of a residence, there is a chance that the home is being burglarized.

The Police Department encourages citizen involvement in preventing burglary and other property crimes, such as vehicle prowls. Recent citizen tips from across the City have resulted in several arrests. Residents are reminded to remove valuables from their cars, and lock the doors of their cars and homes to keep from being victimized by thieves.

Just up from the secretary's house. If that Lakeside business had been just a little closer to our firehall out here there wouldn't have been as much damage.

Or if the garage fire out west would have been a little closer to the firehall it could have been a save rather than a complete loss.

The firehalls were 2 blocks away from each reported fire location and both the garage and the business destroyed.

Thats why we need more firehalls and firefighters on duty, if only the reported fires were, say, maybe a block from each reported fire the outcome would have been different.

My guess is the garage out west had faulty engineered trusses and not built with union labor which is the reason it was a total loss.

So all City of Duluth employees have recieved "customer" training? Obviously one has to wonder, after reading DFD blog team posts here. Duluth is not a successful business. One look at City of Duluth Budgetary hopelessNE$$ proves it. Look where the City of Duluth employee unions political control of hiring, overtime, productivity, and cost ineffectiveNE$$ has brought the City fiscally. We have witNE$$ed the continued City of Duluth "handoff" of the little available taxpayer dollar resource to skywalks, fish tanks, aircraft maintenance facilities, Renaissance Centres, Water gardens, Wethouses, "low income" housing projects, BID districts, and derelict rundown theater buildings, to pad the staus quo, while the infrastructure for it's average citizens slides down a E.P.A. condemed sewer system. What is enough to avail Duluths' status quo? What is enough to satisfy the typical DFL union "smoking screen transparency" of supportive corruptiveNE$$. It may have seemed to work great for the likes of Obama and their local campaign manager NE$$ and A$$ociate$ yesterday, but the world history of this kind of government corruptNE$$ has this taxpayer wondering if the DFL mafia majority rule politicians and the City of Duluth employees really don't quit badly need "public servant and recession employee survival training" instead of "courteous bullshit too customer training"!!!!!!! There is NO business, not even the DEDA Grant, TIF-TIT sucking ones, that can survive under the fooli$hNE$$ of corrupt rules and selfishNE$$ that the Donny DFL "Peoples Party" imposes on Duluth daily. It is obviously economically not feasible and morally doomed. Examples of DFL "leftNE$$" include the demise of our nations economic greatness from abuse of Fannie Mae, Freddie Mac, and GM, to the many businesses that, due to DFL Duluth inspired abuse and dictatorial hopelessNE$$, have fried-n-died in or fled Duluth. Might be time for NE$$ and A$$ociate$, before the people demand their day in God's reconcilation court, to start listening and treating the "customer" like they are right, at least when it makes common sense. Our history as a nation proves that Democracy is right, not a DFL left voted largNE$$ by abuse of the public treausury and democracy fundementals! Donny and A$$ociate$ may wish to try this "customer approach" before DFL "leftwing" redistribution of wealth has Duluth, "you've earned enough", Obama honored, as the City with the highest cost, DFL, status quo mafia, union controled, government, and the largest number, per capita, of low income, economically starved, citizens in the nation. Possibly we are there already, just has to make you proud, Donny and A$$ociate$! I am so ashamed of my hometown, Duluth Minnesota, and it's disregard of honesty, integrity, accountability, liberty, and justice FOR ALL!!!!! Oh, that's it, it's Bushs' fault! NOT! Bush wasn't in the picture 30 plus years ago in Duluth or in the Bill Clinton "livin' the lie" years as the greed of the wealthy and the laziNE$$ of DFL Socialism joined hands to create our nations, and further Duluths', sad outlook and condition of today. Happy DFL DEPENDENCE DAY DONNY.

Trouble is they will still have to pay all the government workers in California back pay at their regular pay once their budget is passed. Sounds like pure politics Calif style. Still like the sign used to say "The end is near".

St. Clair" said this is when Isham proceeded to take Johnson's wallet.

I'm sure Melanie Ford is tearing her hair out trying to come up with some excuse to get these turds a "slap on the wrist"??

How wonderful is THAT? Does this mean that NOW an independent person will be able to earn a living in DFL DULUTH without all of the harassment and under cuts by employees being paid outrageous salaries? The common folk slave away at minimum wage while some take a ride on the Timber Twister. Gee if only the average folk living in Duluth could afford this ride.

Here's another article from the Sacramento news paper.

MODERATOR: Big Iron, when you and your cohorts act like Bernie Madoff and fleece and steal from those that you are getting paid to represent, we can all only hope that your crimes will be stopped as well. The people deserve better than this kind of DFD rip off scheme which benefits only those at DFD PAC, the entity formerly known as the DFD. Don't you just love how the arrogant government workers in California, who used to be just as cocky as you, were told that they would be getting minimum wage from now on. You have got to love it. I can't wait till realistic wages come here to our wonderful DFD PAC team of extortionists, and they will or the city will be bankrupt. Haven't been on here in awhile. Nice to see the fire dept. argument is still in full swing. When will there be a winner in this loonnnggggg debate?

STARFIRE: Lou, it appears that as long as the DFD PAC continues to put themeselves ahead of those that pay their salaries, no end is in sight. When the DFD budget is in line with where it should be and not where the DFD PAC says it should be, the end may be near. Until then, exposing the DFD PAC for who they really are is the name of the game. No taxpayer in the world should be forced to pay for 38 slugs on the cot at the DFD each and every night. Let's get cutting and put this issue behind us and get our volunteers out there doing what a handful of parasites have been getting paid way to much to do for way too long. Now that is change we can all believe in. We can put these 38 back into the private sector and then they may come back to reality, maybe. At least in the private they will be doing something instead of nothing as they are now.

STARFIRE: Cynic, wouldn't it be nice to see some certain others in Duluth act in such unselfish ways? Giving to the community instead of taking and stealing as the DFD PAC does is such a breath of fresh air to hear about. Hint hint Big Iron and DFD Rube. I am talking to you clowns. Many of you DFD PAC rubes live outside of Duluth just to avoid paying ridiculous property taxes for overpaid salaries like your own. How can you people not be ashamed of the hosing you are giving the hard working people who actually work in Duluth and ae forced to pay for your extorted obscene salaries? The monkeys are a lot smarter, but the DFDers are better paid (overpaid by about $81,999) and enjoy the political activities that their organization has turned into, the mighty DFD PAC. Just up from the secretary's house. And another one, what about the house fire on Woodland Av a few years ago. The fire truck was actually driving by when the homeowner waved them into her driveway.

Turned out the response time couldn't have been faster, less than 30 seconds, and the whole fuckin house burns down. A total Loss.

The reason for the total loss, according to the fire union president, was because the house was built using a unusual type of floor joists. Fucking unreal.

The firehall near my house has gone on 3 emergencies this month. We pay these firefighters for what.....sleep, wash vehicles, work on personal projects, watch backdraft and other movies, strategize on how they will get more during their next negotiation session with the city, blog, strategize on how to elect liberal/progressive councilors, work on strategies on how to take over a private ambulance service and take away other union jobs, and the list goes on and on... oh, I forgot one more thing, strategize on how to kick other Duluth Firefighters out of the union if they volunteer in their respective communities as volunteer firefighters. Their union thinking is, "if no one volunteers then they'd have to hire full-time firefighters and we'd have more members in the IAFF.

Duluth Firefighters have a bunch of Thugs running their union.

84352 - Wed Jun 30 16:24:15 2010 - [Oberstar has to go] By: Libertarian
I contacted Oberstar asking him to not vote for the Disclose Act. All of a sudden the dems are concerned with transparency. Turns out he is one of the authors...

Thank you for sharing with me your opposition to the DISCLOSE Act (H.R. 5175). I appreciate hearing from you.

On January 21, 2010, the U.S. Supreme Court, in Citizens United v. Federal Election Commission, struck down as unconstitutional significant campaign finance reform in the Bipartisan Campaign Reform Act of 2002, commonly referred to as the McCain-Feingold Act. This decision struck down the prohibition on corporations (and unions) from using their general treasury funds to advertise for the election or defeat of a candidate. As a result, future elections are now open to unrestricted campaigning by special interests.

On June 24, 2010, with my support, the House of Representatives passed the DISCLOSE Act. This legislation would strengthen disclosure and transparency. For example, the top funder or leader of a corporation, union, or other special interest group would be required to appear on camera and announce that he or she approves an advertisement, just like current law requires candidates to do in political ads. Similar to the requirement that candidates disclose expenditures and who is funding their campaigns, corporations, unions, and other special interest groups would be required to provide full and timely disclosure of campaign-related expenditures and information on major donors. Additionally, this legislation would ban large government contractors, Troubled Asset Relief Program recipients, and corporations that are controlled by foreign interests from spending money on US elections.

While I understand that this bill is not perfect, I believe that every citizen has a right to know who is spending money to influence elections. Nothing in this legislation prohibits speech or First Amendment rights. The DISCLOSE Act would provide unprecedented transparency and accountability by ensuring that powerful special interests spending millions of dollars are not able to hide behind third party groups, sham organizations, and dummy corporations. It simply allows voters to follow the money and make informed decisions.

The legislation is awaiting consideration in the U.S. Senate.

With best wishes.

Sincerely,

James L. Oberstar, M.C.

I'm sounding like a union thug from the Duluth fire department for the Christ sake.

84339 - Tue Jun 29 08:21:54 2010 - [Quick response volunteer fire department] By: Cynic
From the daily rag:

Hours after Bruce Roed helped pull a woman from the rubble of the tornado damage, he realized she was a colleague.

In fact, Patricia Wilber of Grand Forks, N.D., was so seriously injured after a freezer collapsed on her in Mentor, Minn., that her husband of 40 years could barely recognize her in the hospital that night.

Her fate, though, could have been worse without the quick response of the volunteer fire department.

“We were very fortunate that they were there and they had the training and equipment to do the job,” said husband Russ Wilber.

When tornados ripped through rural Minnesota on June 17, it was volunteer firefighters like Roed who were first on the scene.

Accustomed to calls of grass fires or car accidents, they aren’t usually thrust into the center of such widespread disaster.

“It was the most serious, most difficult (situation) … that they’ve ever encountered or they ever will encounter,” said Roed, a 40-year firefighter and a coordinator for state fire training.

The volunteers receive about 140 hours of training, though many departments like Mentor’s also require training throughout the year. They work, though, for free.

“Nobody gets paid a nickel for anything,” he said. “There’s an awfully lot of training that goes on that … nobody knows about, especially in the volunteer ranks.”

About two weeks ago, it proved worthwhile.

After Roed followed the funnel cloud rolling by Mentor (pop. 149), he paged his 30 volunteers to the town about 50 miles east of Grand Forks.

At the town’s convenience store, which was obliterated by the tornado, firefighters pulled out Wes Michaels, who died after sheltering his daughter, Pat Wilber, and another woman in the store’s walk-in cooler.

They then used a jaws tool to lift a freezer that had trapped Wilber. She was treated until an ambulance arrived to take her to a hospital. She is expected to be released from the hospital on Wednesday.

It wasn’t until a police officer showed Roed her driver’s license hours later that he realized who she was.

Running into familiar faces on calls isn’t unusual for volunteer firefighters.

“Small towns, small communities are very vulnerable to that because you know everybody,” he said. “That can be very hard.”

Two hours southeast of there, Dean Uselman was being tested as Wadena’s fire chief of two months.

Despite the phone lines and pagers being down, his 20 volunteer firefighters quickly assembled, searching for victims and controlling gas leaks after a tornado whipped through west-central Minnesota.

“We were the only ones on the scene right away,” Uselman said. “This is by far the worst incident we’ve ever been involved in. You can’t prepare for something like this.”

Now, the Mentor and Wadena volunteer firefighters hope to settle back into routine — their full-time jobs and the 30 to 70 calls they receive a year.

They won’t return to routine without thanks.

Families like the Wilbers are showing their appreciation for the volunteers. After all, without them, the response time would have been much greater for tornado victims that day.

“The community thinks well of us, and that’s a good thing,” Roed said. “It’s one thing to do it for nothing when you’re appreciated.”

President Obama is doing the very best he can to remove BP oil. Not really. He refused foreign help at first due to the Jones Act. This would have involved foreign non union ship crews.

http://www.liveleak.com/view?i=3e5_1277518993

Crucial offers to help clean up BP’s oil spill “have come from Belgian, Dutch, and Norwegian firms that . . . possess some of the world’s most advanced oil skimming ships.” But the Obama administration wouldn’t accept the help, because doing so would require it to do something past presidents have routinely done: waive rules imposed by the Jones Act, a law backed by unions.

“The BP clean-up effort in the Gulf of Mexico is hampered by the Jones Act. This is a piece of 1920s protectionist legislation, that requires all vessels working in U.S. waters to be American-built, and American-crewed. So . . . the U.S. Coast Guard . . . can’t accept, and therefore don’t ask for, the assistance of high-tech European vessels specifically designed for the task in hand.”

The law itself permits the president to waive these requirements, and such waivers were “granted, promptly, by the Bush administration,” in the aftermath of hurricanes and other emergencies. But Obama has refused to do so, notes David Warren in the Ottawa Citizen. Instead, Obama rejected a Dutch offer to help clean up the spill, noted Voice of America News:

“The Obama administration declined the Dutch offer partly because of the Jones Act, which restricts foreign ships from certain activities in U.S. waters. During the Hurricane Katrina crisis five years ago, the Bush administration waived the Jones Act in order to facilitate some foreign assistance, but such a waiver was not given in this case.”

“After the Obama administration refused help from the Netherlands, Geert Visser, the consul general for the Netherlands in Houston, told Loren Steffy: ‘Let’s forget about politics; let’s get it done.’” But for Obama, politics always comes first: “The explanation of Obama’s reluctance to seek this remedy is his cozy relationship with labor unions. . . ‘The unions see it "not waiving the act
as … protecting jobs. They hate when the Jones Act gets waived.’”

Ironically, even the staunchest supporters of the Jones Act are now distancing themselves from refusals to accept foreign help, saying they have “not and will not stand in the way of the use of these well-established waiver procedures to address this crisis.” Obama is being more intransigently pro-union than the unions themselves.

One can only hope Obama will change his mind now, given that “each day our European allies are prevented from helping us speed up the clean up is another day that Gulf fishing and tourism jobs die.”

(The Obama administration has belatedly accepted some foreign equipment for use in fighting the spill, although it still blocks ships with foreign crews. As Voice of America notes, although “the Netherlands offered help in April,” such as providing “sophisticated” oil “skimmers and dredging devices,” the Obama administration blocked their crews from working in U.S. waters, and as a result, this crucial “operation was delayed until U.S. crews could be trained” in June. “The Dutch also offered assistance with building sand berms (barriers) along the coast of Louisiana to protect sensitive marshlands, but that offer was also rejected, even though Louisiana Governor Bobby Jindal had been requesting such protective barriers.”)

Cravaack calls on Oberstar to resign as head of House Transportation Comittee
June 26, 2010

ST. PAUL — Congressional candidate Chip Cravaack today called on Rep. James Oberstar to resign as chairman of the House Transportation and Infrastructure Committee because he has failed to take any useful action in the two months since an oil well began to poison the Gulf of Mexico.

“During the worst environmental disaster in American history, Jim Oberstar has been asleep at the helm of the House Transportation committee,” Cravaack, a graduate of the United States Naval Academy, said. “No skipper has been so slow to act since Joe Hazelwood was sleeping it off in his bunk during the Exxon Valdez crash in 1989. It is time for Jim Oberstar to step down as chairman of the House Transportation and Infrastructure Committee.”

Oberstar is chair of the committee which oversees the Coast Guard and is responsible for federal management of emergencies and oil pollution of navigable waters, including inland, costal, and ocean waters.

“Not only has Congressman Oberstar failed to protect America’s coastline, he has obstructed cleanup efforts that could have saved hundreds of American jobs in the fishing and tourism industries. “

Cravaack called to light the fact that Oberstar has had two months to formulate a plan to deal with the cleanup of the spill. Not only have Oberstar and his committee failed to come up with a plan, they have made the situation worse by holding up vital equipment and machinery from getting to the affected areas.

Cravaack asks Americans share their ideas with him on a SPECIAL PAGE set up this morning.

“We need leadership, action and results now. It is time for new vision and a new work ethic in Congress,” Cravaack said. “It is time for Congressman Oberstar to step down and time for America to work together to find common sense solutions.

Here is a chance for the population of Duluth to grow.

President Obama is considering giving "deferred action and parole" to all illegal immigrants in the USA, i.e blanket amnesty for the illegal immigrant. Illegal immigrant is a politically incorrect term I mean "undocumented worker". Think how many government assistance programs could become available.

Here is a Senate letter to President Obama on the subject:

Inspector Clouseau I've been wondering the same thing. Where TF is our very own "queen of the blogosphere" "C"? I have some ideas.

-C is blogged out. After all, a woman like her can only put out so much.

-C was told by the DFL establishment to STFU. She was making Mels reelection campaign look bad. She was the proverbial "kiss of death". I doubt Mel's campaign can recover the damage done by the endorsement of "C".

-"C" has been exposed as a fraud. Her ideas have no merit. She has been exposed and deposed by local bloggers. Fini.

-It's possible "C" has been institutionalized and has no internet access.

-"C" may be on vacation in Europe. After all "C" has traveled all over the world. Ah the life of a uber-wealthy progressive activist.

-"C" has left her wacko progressive husband and is having an illicit affair with Big Iron. An adulterous affair at an Island Lake mansion.

"Is the internet big enough to publish at the DFL Duluth WIC recipients, residents supported by Section 8 Housing assistance, and people on welfare and other public-aid programs?"

I'm sure Steve O'Neil or the ACLU, or some other leftist group, would block this as a violation of "Freeloaders Rights" or something!

Wouldn't it be nice for the tax payers in Duluth & St. Louis County, who each year pay more & more taxes and have more & more services taken away, to see how much goes to every one who shows up here and asks for a handout?

Never seems to be a budget shortage when it comes to handing out welfare money?

Is the internet big enough to publish at the DFL Duluth WIC recipients, residents supported by Section 8 Housing assistance, and people on welfare and other public-aid programs?

http://www.duluthnewstribune.com/event/article/id/171906/group/Opinion/

If salaries are public, subsidies should be, too

If public employees’ salaries are going to be published, as the writer of a June 14 letter suggested, I would suggest, in the same article or listing, including by name and amount all those who draw taxpayer money. That would include WIC recipients, residents supported by Section 8 Housing assistance, and people on welfare and other public-aid programs.

The website transparentnevada.com lists all public employees in my state, by name and the amount of money drawn, but has no mention of others who draw state and federal tax dollars. Is that fair to dedicated state and local employees?

Good news for the train... you will need it. According to a Harvard Kennedy School's Belfer Center for Science and International Affairs study reducing carbon emmisions like Mr. Obama wants to do, a gallon of gas will cost $7.

Get used to spending $100 or more a tankful.

http://belfercenter.ksg.harvard.edu/publication/19951/reducing_cars_and_trucks_carbon_emissions_difficult_but_feasible_new_study_finds.html?breadcrumb=%2Fpress%2Freleases

CAMBRIDGE, Mass. — A new study from current and former researchers at Harvard Kennedy School's Belfer Center for Science and International Affairs finds that reducing greenhouse gas emissions from transportation will be a much bigger challenge than conventional wisdom assumes — requiring substantially higher fuel prices combined with more stringent regulation.

The study finds that reducing carbon dioxide (CO2) emissions from the transportation sector 14 percent below 2005 levels by 2020 may require gas prices greater than $7/gallon by 2020. It also finds that, while relying on subsidies for electric or hybrid vehicles is politically seductive, it is extremely expensive and an ineffective way to significantly reduce greenhouse gas emissions in the near term....

Fortunately for the people of Duluth they have a professional fire dept. to respond to any emergency that may arise. We are very well trained. It costs money to have a fulltime professional fire dept. on duty every minute of every day. Risking our lives is something we take serious thus the reason to pay all of us a reasonable salary.

Trust me, during a structure fire we earn every penny. I understand there are people who just don't get it and will continue to take "cheap shots" at us. I am a proud union member of the Duluth Fire Department!

Just 20 miles up from Dodge St. So we had the elitists in Lakeside whining enough to where they will get Glenwood St. rebuilt with the demanded fancy, little bicycle lanes. Then they whined AGAIN to where the city was filling potholes (for the 2nd time) a few weeks before it's torn up. Good use of the citizen's money, eh Dodge St.? Eh, Tourv? Eh, Cynic? Eh, Cerebral?...Eh, Starfire???

MODERATOR: Big Iron, lets see here. Pay to repair a street which is in terrible condition or pay 38 DFD slugs to sleep each and every night. Hmmm...., which is the best use of taxpayer money? Tough one for you to get Big Iron?

The numbers you've given Dodge St are not accurate. You forgot to add benefits which equal 3,750 for the Lakeside station every two weeks because your staffing 24/7 with 3 shifts and 2 firefighters on at all times. So the total should be $31,750 to staff your local firehall.

Dodge St. your right on with the Duluth fire department but you don't know half the shit I know about that organization. Keep up the good work.
