I think you make some very valid points.
On the other hand many students at UMD have sat in the dining cetner or food court and have overheard black students and the next table making snide and derogatory remarks about white students that are in the area. Those are also RACIST remarks! It's the same thing as what the white girls did on Facebook! It is just as wrong. If black students at UMD say they and their black friends never sit around and make derogatory remarks about "the white students" then they are lying through their teeth!

Racism is alive in the Northland, yes even at UMD and there is nothing no one can do about. It is an innate behavior. We all hate. I run into people that say they believe in some god, even the god that claims this Jesus as some-kind of saint, yet they are racist. Why? My cousins are this way and I ask, are we not all god’s children? I don’t believe in any god’s, ghosts, or gobblins. Racism is evolution.
When looking at what people call racism, hate crimes, or any thing in that paradigm, we are not that civil thinking as a people. Let me first look at myself and the hate I have inside of me. When I was young I use to be a fan of John Gilliam, the wide receiver for the Minnesota Vikings. I knew he was black from his football card I had and also I knew that other black people played for the Vikings. I never saw a black person in person during that time in my life. Then one day, some black people moved in near our family. I remember being nervous around them for no reason what so ever I thought. My parents and friends at the time were not racist or even had those thoughts. I just never saw a black person before and I was curious and spied on them. They were quite normal and I would become a friend with the one boy my age. So, I question myself, why did I feel that way? I would run into a young woman years later and tell her this story and she too, when she was young remembers having these feeling towards blacks also.
I have grown up since then and I know the level of melanin in ones’ skin determines what color they are. Environment also plays a factor towards skin color. The darker one is, is based on warm climates and the amount of clothing they have to wear. If you took a bunch of white people and placed them on an island, a warm one, in about five to 10 generations, their skin would start to get darker or would be dark.
Racism, hate, or whatever one wants to call it is also needed for bonding. People like to bond for survival. Take a look at the French and the English and their wars over the years. Here is hate and there are no colors involved. Yet, for many years these people from these two countries hated each other and went to war with each other. Even today, there is a little rift, but they have progressed from killing each other. If there were a color difference, maybe the English being purple let us say, then racism also would have been in play in their wars. Our Cold war with Russia was two pretty much white nations going at it, but if all of mother Russia was Pink in color, then the hate we had in our propaganda would perhaps pointed out their skin color and many Pink Jokes would be out there even today.
The Facebook incident at UMD has caught a lot of attention. These women that wrote about their black classmate said things that many white people think. I run into racist thinking people all the time and generally blow them off on way or another. What these women were doing was not wrong, its just not excepted in our modern thinking country by many. We have laws against race crimes and hate now. Yet words can be said. To change this is impossible. I have tried before changing how a person thinks and it did not work. This guy I tried to change still hates people based on skin today even. These thinkers still exist.
When I took an Ethics course at Lake Superior College, my instructor said to the class the racism is illogical. I pointed out to this guy that it is innate. He would say to me, “I hope we have progressed beyond that thinking.” We have not and educated people like this instructor have placed our world today beyond early man’s thinking. I think we have not gone that far and only turn to the State of Arizona. The white people in that state want to ID people based on color of their skin. Sure, I understand the fact many illegal immigrants come over the border and that terrorist could sneak over the border also. But this law was passed by white people and shows this thinking still exist. Just go to some of the blogs about this law and what people are writing about. You will see the white people bonding at these blogs in their words. This law was sold as a way to control illegal immigrants, yet many at these blogs view it as a way for control on another level.
To control how one thinks and speaks is a hard thing to change or control. Like I said before, we all have hate in us. I hate people who hate people based on skin color, yet you would not catch me in Harlem at 3AM walking the streets. I hate people that lie to get out of trouble or make up lies. There is no color or nationality involved with my thinking towards liars. So, go on and hate, it is natural. If you don’t hate anything, I would call you a liar and I hate you.

At 4:45 AM this morning, Friday, May 14, 2010, the Duluth Police were called to the Holiday Stationstore, 210 South 27th Avenue West, on the report that an attempted robbery had just occurred. A lone white male in his mid-20’s had entered the store and demanded money from the cash register. The male suspect told employee’s that he had a weapon but none was seen and the suspect then left the store without any money.
The description of the male was given to responding officers who set up a perimeter in the area. At 5:13 AM a male matching the description of the robbery suspect was located at 24th Avenue West and West Third Street. The 25 year old Duluth male was identified as the suspect in the robbery and taken into custody without incident.
The investigation into the robbery continues and no further details are available at this time.

I teach in Duluth but live in Hermantown. Please, Please don't equate teachers with Duluth Fire Fighters. For what they did to the Hermantown Volunteer fire fighters who wanted to serve our community is outrageous. The Duluth fire fighters kicked those 3 out of their union for wanting to serve in our city as volunteers.
Believe me DCB, lots of people open your blog and read whats in it mostly for entertainment but I couldn't resist when someone put the teachers union in with the fire fighters.
We are seperate and not happy with much of what they say or do and understand why they have to be political. Please remember readers: Teachers don't equate with fire fighters. BTW, I along with many Duluth teachers, am happy to have a job and appreciate my salary paid by the taxpayers. I love teaching and being around the kids...

No, I really think it has a lot to do with those days off. IMO, if teachers worked 11 months in a year, received the same salary and had no "snow days," there would be much less complaining. However, I'm not sure that would solve ranking issues, escalating costs, etc.,
MODERATOR: Jeff, the number 1 cost of education is due to salaries, benefits, pensions. Proof of this can be found in that the first 500 teachers in ISD 709 are pulling down over $62,000 a year plus benefits plus pensions. I would like to see the cost to results ratio and compare it to other countries. I would bet the U.S. would rank in the bottom of the barrel with the highest cost per student. This ratio would prove that it is time to start educating the students instead of making the teachers rich. That old saying of having to make it on a teachers salary was made up by some teacher before the computer age. Now the whole world can see the obscene salaries that the teachers union is extorting from the taxpayers. |

Teachers work more than 8 months per year. It is actually 9 months per year. They receive about 12 weeks off including the months of July and August along with 2 full weeks in June (in most districts). The Christmas and Spring breaks equal 2 weeks. So, the job of a teacher is extremely important for our future, but don't let anyone fool you. Teachers don't work 12 weeks out of the year.
I have a non-teaching job with a private company and have been employed for 23 years, I receive 4 weeks of vacation every year. I encourage everyone to look at what our teachers make, including their benefits, so you can make your own informed decision as to whether or not they are overpaid or underpaid or paid about right!

Our kids don't go to Woodland but we hear all the horror stories from our friends who send their kids there.
What we hear is a LOT of bullying is going on. Some kids getting hurt and a lot of kids being threatened. So much so that it has become the "norm" up there.
On one hand the teachers and pricipal, in the past, have tried to deal with the trouble makers with a frim hand and have found little or NO help from the little creeps parents! "My little Johnny or Susie wouldn't do something like that" is what they get from the bad kids parents. The school is "overeacting"!
They also seem paralized in fear to actually take real action against the trouble makers. Little slaps on the wrist are what they usually get. So no consequence, the kids keep it up!

Two tickets to paradise
Being a city councilor has its perks, but one thing it won't get you: a pass from parking tickets.
Todd Fedora and Jim Stauber found that out last week when they spoke at the Chamber Forum last week, and because they were parked at one-hour spots and the event lasts for a bit longer than that, they both got tickets. They could have parked in the Tech Village garage to avoid those tickets, or, apparently they could have been city employees.
Stauber said that he was parked next to three city vehicles driven by the same employees who attended/the one who spoke at the Forum. None of those vehicles got tickets.
He brought this up during last Thursday's agenda session, to which city CAO David Montgomery said he didn't believe it was right that the vehicles weren't ticketed.
But, city attorney Gunnar Johnson sent an email to the council Friday saying it was his understanding that "city vehicles on official business do not receive parking tickets."
That begs the question: were the employees there on official city business? Economos, a speaker at the Forum, said he was coming from a job site and would return to it at the end of the Forum. The other city workers at the Forum seemed like they were there to support Economos -- they were all part of the AFSCME bargaining team.
It begs another question: how many comments will I get on this post? I'm putting the over/under at 35. |

Very interesting that the city is looking at all portions of union contracts so early in the game to be able to publicly expose some corruption. This is a great idea and the overall majority of taxpayers will appreciate it.
The idea of exposing corruption in union contracts to the public was discussed years ago but was not given the go ahead by the boss. Good for you Mayor Ness. Remember when all is exposed don't go after the individual employees rather the union as a whole. The vast majority of union employees are good workers but the problem was when we had a union employee who wasn't worth their weight in dog shit and the union still fought for their job was very sad to watch and listen to.
Unions won't agree to any type of merit pay because they believe that merit pay exposes the free loaders too much.

In my opinion, and in the opinion or every student I have talked to about the Facebook incident, the girls in question should be kicked out of the school.
However, everyone I have talked also are upset about the entire 11,000 student body being implicated in this as if UMD is a racist campus. It is not! There is great resentment against Chancellor Martin for, instead of letting the public/media know that the overwhelming majority of UMD's students are NOT racist, she threw us under the bus. I am so tired of people who cry racism, homophobia, whatever-phobia. They are trying to get attention, and seem to be promoting a rather disengeuous agenda.
Why not just call a criminal a criminal, a deviate a deviate, a goon a goon, no matter what their race, gender, sexual orientation or religion is/is not? All crimes that involve harming another human being could be classified as 'hate crimes', don't you think? Plenty of people harm others who are of the same race, religion, or gender as themselves. The message should be: DO NOT HARM OTHER PEOPLE. PERIOD. IF YOU DO, FOR WHATEVER REASON(other than accidental/self-defense), YOU WILL ENDURE MOST UNPLEASANT CONSEQUENCES. THE LAW DOES NOT WEIGH THE VALUE OF A LIFE BY ADJUSTING THE PENALTY FOR HARMING OR ENDING ONE. Maybe I'm dreaming on that one, huh?
I never saw that video or whatever that got the UMD protesters all upset. I don't care to, and I don't care about what the folks in the sauna were doing. I wasn't there participating in any of it, and as far as I know, nobody got hurt, anyway(that would certainly give a different slant to the story). Besides, aren't the folks in the video entitled to be who they are and be proud of it, too? Are they ashamed of what they were doing? What's the problem? If they desire privacy, then why in the hell are there a bunch of protesters out there drawing even more attention to whatever they felt was okay to do, anyway?
I guess it irks me that all these folks who holler about the various "isms" are completely forgetting about those of us who aren't racists or sexists or homophobes, but are calling certain actions what they are regardless of who's doing them, or to/with whom.
I'm afraid there will always be a certain segment of the population who will remain prejudiced against certain groups of humanity, no matter what anybody says. There will always be people who feel that they can categorize humanity from the most to the least(prochoicers, who can dismiss the humanity of a newly conceived human being, come to mind- the humanity of an unborn person is as vital as anyone's, even when it's not convenient or close enough to perfect. To a prochoicer, this segment of humanity can be 'disposed of' like unwanted pets). They are stuck in mental mud.

They told me how this storm water money would be used to fix culverts even though that is considered road maintenance for which the city already got a kick back from the state to do. No matter how much money they collect it is never enough for DFL Duluth. In fact when I refused to pay they said to me "What do you want streets to collapse because of culverts and other storm water related problems?"

Just up from the secretary's house. Cynic your absolutely correct. For what we pay our firefighters to do, we could install as many smoke alarms in every house in our city to save lives. In fact, since 1991 smoke and CO dectectors have saved more lives than firefighters. Working smoke detectors are the way to go. Can you imagine if we were progressive thinkers how much money could be saved by us taxpayers by making sure all homes have several working smoke detectors on each level of their house making it then a sin to staff DFD with 38 firefighters sleeping at night.
The DFD's are fleecing us blind but I am happy more people across our city are seeing them for who they are. The firehall down the street from me goes on about 4 calls per week. To think we staff that firehall with 2 full-time firefighters 24/7 is unbelievable. That is what you call fleecing.
Demand a change, call your councilors and mayor. Oh thats right, the DFD owns 6 councilors who protect them. Until the election we can continue to expose the DFD and who they really are. DFL/DFD/AFSCME Fleecers. |

I did notice that in the apartment fire a few days ago the residents were saved by a smoke alarm and one of the occupants who heard it. Like I said before if you want to survive a fire or other danger take precautions to save yourself. Don't rely on some some government entity.

It appears that retirement health fund is now a Special Fund, OBED,which was created in 2007. I do not believe it is in the individual department budgets, but I could be wrong. The 2010 retiree health fund payment will be $2,700,000. The total retiree health fund now has $23.400,000. Below is the actual 2010 City of Duluth budget statement on the subject:
The OPEB fund was created in 2007 for the purpose to accumulate resources to be deposited into an irrevocable trust fund for retiree health care costs.
The 2007 revenues in the fund included a one-time contribution from the Community Investment Trust Fund in the amount of $10 million; contributions from the enterprise funds and all grant funds which have employees. There was also a onetime transfer from the Group Health Fund in the amount of $1 million - with $500,000 of that returned to the Group Health Fund in 2008.
Property taxes have been levied in 2008 and 2009 based on the value of retiring tax increment finance districts.
By Council Resolution, if estimated Gas Utility Payments in Lieu of Tax exceed inflation, the difference must be transferred into the OPEB fund.
For 2010, contributions will total $2.7 million for an estimated fund balance of $23.4 million accumulated since inception in 2007. |

My husband was deployed for almost 18 months and received almost that same amount of money in the 18 months he was over there as Duluth firemen make in 12 months.
