| What's the problem "DFD"? Feeling a little anxious for being exposed for the fraud that you really are? I was impressed by the post made by Firefighter. He /she seem like someone who truly cares about their community. However "DFD" your hate and greed is quite obvious. I'm curious "DFD" how many college credits do you have? Starfire posed an excellent question, be the "man" that you claim to be and answer the question posed to you. HOW MANY COLLEGE CREDITS DO YOU HAVE? Hell, dude, there are attorneys who don't make money like you do! The total value of your salary and benefits well exceeds $100,000 dollars a year! Where else can one make such money with so little education? Can you answer that one "DFD"? What about the dirty truth that people like you have and operate 2nd jobs concurrently with your "firefighter" "careers"? What about the little man there at the DFD that does roofing work on the side? How's that working out? Where in world can one find the time and energy to do roofing work in addition to the "physical" "demands" and "dangers" of being a "firefighter". I thought the demands of being a "firefighter" were so overwhelming that one had no time for family or a life outside of being a "professional" "firefighter". Whatever you fraud. |

83812 - Fri Apr 30 17:10:51 2010 - [Up in Smoke] By: Locals Gone Wild |
DATE: 04/30/2010
NATURE OF INCIDENT: Structure Fire
CASE NO.: 10245970
INCIDENT DATE :03/20/2010
INCIDENT TIME: 12:01 PM
INCIDENT LOCATION: 2325 West 7th Street
SUBJECT: Duluth Man charged in Apartment Fire
BY: Officer Brad Wick, Information Coordinator
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
A 21 year old Duluth man has been charged in connection with a March 20th, 2010 fire that caused $72,000 in damages to a Lincoln Park apartment building.
Derek Thomas LaPlante, age 21 of Duluth, has been charged with: Felony Negligent Fire; Felony Sale/Manufacture of Marijuana; Felony Possession of a Controlled Substance; and Possession of Drug Paraphernalia.
On Saturday, March 20th, 2010, at 12:01 PM, the Duluth Police and Duluth Fire Departments responded to 2325 West 7th Street on the report of smoke coming from the second floor apartment. A short time later flames were seen coming from the roof which the fire department was able to extinguish.
During the investigation into the fire, it was determined that LaPlante had a marijuana grow operation in his second floor apartment and that the excessive electrical draw overloaded the circuits causing a fire in the wall. LaPlante was unable to extinguish the fire himself forcing him to call 911. Fire and Police Department personnel found numerous marijuana plants, drug paraphernalia, and growing equipment in the LaPlante’s second floor apartment.
LaPlante is not in custody and will appear in court on a future date.

83808 - Thu Apr 29 20:53:27 2010 - [DFD, highest paid fire department in USA] By: Sparky |
I've read the responses from the DCB'rs
and all there is left to say
is that the ones trying to defend the unions
are the ones who are getting the BIG PAY!!
They don't speak about the lives they've ruined
or jobs they've taken away
it is just their own self centered world
that keeps everything looking 'okay'
I have a family but can't buy one single gift
the union gals and guys think a little diff-er-ent
They think that as long as they're on the lake and
doing okay, it doesn't matter who's life or income they took away.
So what if the DFD'rs are giving the finger to hard working folk, their salary dictates every single poke.
So go ahead have your way, there's nothing left but for you to have your say,
to the highest paid fire department
Have a GREAT DAY!!! |

83806 - Thu Apr 29 19:13:43 2010 - [DFD requires only one major for the job] By: DFD |
Wow, You moderators are full of shit. Guess failing the FD test has hurt you real bad, eh? Gold cross asks for help with the cot because they can't lift it. State patrol trusted the DFD with their lives by jumping into a DFD rope rescue. The St. Louis County Death Squad shows up AFTER the DFD resolved the issue at hand. Finally, the Citizen blog is a bunch of pussy shitbags who failed the test and hate minimum wage. FXXk off.
STARFIRE: DFD, I hope that you are not a true example of the best that the DFD has to offer. Pretty sad attitude you have. One thing is apparent. DFD assists all other public services to get any job done. There is nothing wrong with that except that Duluthians should be demanding an enormous cut in DFD pay as DFD is not the professional organization that they claim to be. How putting down Gold Cross, Minnesota State Parol, St. Louis Rescue, and DCB helps the DFD cause is beyond me, but you are the clown with the yap open. Personally, folding mom's underwear in the basement is more exciting than the life of a DFDer. Sure the pay is nowhere near what the DFD extorts, $82,000 a year from what I have heard, but then again, nothing lasts forever. By the way, how many years of college does DFD require to be one of the finest Helmet Shiners in the State? My guess is no college but instead a major in saliva production for the shining required to get on the payroll. Nepotism 101, DFD Duluth, requires no brains, all saliva. |

83801 - Thu Apr 29 14:41:40 2010 - [DFD Actions Louder Than Their Words] By: Firefighter |
The previous posts listed here about fire fighters, both paid and volunteer, as well as Rescue Squad, are totally uncalled for. Both unanimous bloggers and moderators are making false statements that do nothing but anger members of our community. This needs to stop. The other thing that needs to change: we need to improve the way our emergency response departments work together.
The recent fire at Rice Lake Road, just outside of city limits, as well as fires on the St Louis County River Road, and others show that mutual aid needs to be used more between the Duluth Fire Department and the surrounding areas. The fire on Rice Lake Road was only a short distance away from city limits. Duluth crews could have been dispatched through mutual aid, and a fire engine and 3 fire fighters could have been there within about 5 minutes from dispatch. Instead, they called several other neighboring volunteer departments that are further away. It is runored that there were many firefighters that showed up in personal vehicles, but not in a fire engine, with water, a pump, ladders and rescue equipment. It was also rumored that they could hear the woman screaming inside.
Duluth Fire Department relies on fire hydrants and drafting sites for its water. Surrounding deparments have large water tenders, carrying several thousand gallons of water each. There are several areas in Duluth's city limits where tenders are needed for an adequate water supply. Duluth must rely on surrounding volunteer departments for this equipment.
Large incidents, such as a Mass Casualty Incident- a fire in a large apartment building, a bus accident, plane crash, large wildfire, require more resources that any department has by itself. If agencies are unable to work well together on small incidents, they will not work well together on large incidents. The cost of which would be born by large amounts of property loss, or great loss of life.
It is in the best interests of everyone in the region to improve upon relationships between not only fire fighters, volunteer and paid, but also our police departments, gold cross and more. I hope the administration of various departments will take it upon themselves to improve mutual aid policies, and perhaps even do some joint training and exercises so we learn to work together before a large incident.
PARROT: Firefighter, thanks for the better tone than others on here. I do have a few questions and comments.
First, why did the DFD union kick its members out of the union that live out of Duluth and volunteer on their local volunteer fire departments? This is anything but “working together” as you state above.
Second, the “rumored” comes off as fear mongering in your use above.
Third, the attempted takeover of Gold Cross services appeared to be a power grab by the DFD who was willing to take other union jobs away. How is that “working together”?
You may be more moderate in your statements above but the actions of the DFD union have been quite the opposite.

83800 - Thu Apr 29 12:55:47 2010 - [Citizens are Fed Up with DFD Propaganda] By: Cynic |
What I heard were DFDers and their supporters ripping apart volunteer firefighters and blaming them for someones death. Another smear campaign to make DFD look more important and somehow better. Pure speculation and pure bullshit by the way.
I represent no one and am simply a citizen given a voice on DCB.
Not a one of you has the balls to go up to the Rice Lake Fire Hall and talk your shit about how they did their job. One thing we know for sure is your unions says you had better not give them a hand and perhaps show them how to be better firefighters. How sick! It is time for the people of Duluth to wake up.
What are you still mad that you didn't get to take the food out the mouths of Gold Cross Ambulance employees families. Not once did I see a Duluth Firefighter on the media saying he or she did not support the(scab) takeover of Gold Cross employee jobs. All I saw was a smear campaign about Gold Cross and their employees. Didn't work there either. Ya it's too bad some of us now have a voice.
DFD said: "I also agree it takes a piece of shit person to not say who or what they represent while running a blog while they rip others apart." |

83799 - Thu Apr 29 12:03:28 2010 - [DFD & Goldman Sachs both con-artists] By: Truthism |
DFD, Rusty, Pro-DFD and all other DFDers,
Spare me the drama and deception about the non-profits you use for your self-serving public relations stunts. Not all of us are that stupid.
You have a choice to donate money to a non-profits, churches, and if you choose to purchase a product or service. I don't have a choice to pay for the DFD and their scheduling games, high wages, and better healthcare and retirement than most working Americans.
I find the DFD’s involvement in local politics crooked and self-serving gluttony, no different than those greedy Goldman Sachs con-artists. But, at least I have a choice with Goldman Sachs. The DFD will not earn my respect until the DFD stops funding and running the campaigns of their “owned” politicians.

83798 - Thu Apr 29 08:08:02 2010 - [DFDers earn very near poverty level] By: Kim J. |
Please Mr. Moderator show me where you got the information that a duluth fireman gets paid $82,000 per year. Your out of your mind if I may say so. I think it is public record so prove it. Firemen are public employees and they receive moderate wages from what I know and $82,000 per year would make them "rich". They probably make about 35 or 40K per year if that. Anyone....
MODERATOR: Kim J, can you or anybody name one DFDer who has ever quit his or her job because of the difficulty or dangers of the job? That should tell us all what we want to know. Please don't include those DFDers who made disability claims even though they were hurt on their personal time, yet claimed it happened on DFD time. Good thing for DFD that integrity is not required to get on the payroll. |

83797 - Thu Apr 29 08:02:05 2010 - [DFD known by many as "Union Busters"] By: Medic |
An earlier blogger suggested that we not allow "volunteers" to help with the renovation of the northshor theatre and that we must use union labor. I couldn't agree more with that statement. Unions give us good jobs and wages and protect us from outside influences. That being said, I don't agree with all union rules or how some union members act.
Like when the Duluth Fire department tried to take away Union Paramedic jobs from Gold Cross awhile back. Our retail clerks union stood tall against the rouge and shameful fire union. The Duluth Fire union could have cared less about our families and the mouths we have to feed. They only cared about themselves.
The committe made the correct decision to allow Gold Cross to provide the ALS service to the citizens of Duluth and surrounding areas. We believe the Retail Clerks union put this issue to bed for a long time.
The Duluth Fire Dept. members think they are hero's but many of us view them as "union busters". I am happy to still have a job and serving the citizens of Duluth and Superior as a Nationally Registered Paramedic. Thanks Retail Clerks union for protecting me, I too have a family to feed but the Duluth Fire Department could have given a shit less. It was all about them in trying to justify their existance. |

Enough with the few people pretending to be Firefighters in this great city. The folks writing here to get a rise out of the Citizen Blog are not representing the whole. Yap as you will about PACs.. Pawlenty has a PAC as does EVERYONE else in the government sector. Bottom line is the firefighters in Duluth do a good job. I can assure you they spend more out of pocket on fundraising efforts for the MDA, Salvation Army, Toyland Express, United Way, Depot, Library, and Second Harvest Food Bank. (Just to name a few).
Do the research, The money is asked by city officials (to volunteer) to be taken out of the pockets of firefighters as well as ALL CITY WORKERS to go to these nonprofits! Yup, right out of the paycheck by payroll personnel. What a bunch of asshole taxpaying bloodsuckers those workers are!! The fact they HAVE to throw a few bucks into a pot to keep working and helping in this city is BEYOND me!!!! I agree with Rusty when I say stop by a city department for a bit and see what they all do. ANY city department will be happy to show you their day. Until then, SHUT THE FXXK UP!!!! I also agree it takes a piece of shit person to not say who or what they represent while running a blog while they rip others apart. Where are the balls??
MODERATOR: DFDer, sounds like you just might have an anger issue to deal with. First of all, PAC means what? That's right, Political Action Committee. That means that DFD has decided to be a political organization by forming an funneling money into their very own DFD PAC. And they do this to buy politicians who help DFDers and not the taxpayers who actually pay the obscene salaries and benefits for the DFD PAC people. Cry as you will, it is long overdue for change at DFD. And in regards to the Fill the Boot BS, why should the taxpayers pay the full salaries of you DFD PAC people when the whole event is just a public relations gig for the DFD to better its image. In regards to what the DFD PAC people do, we are all learning that the simple answer is not very much. Gold Cross handles the medicals and DFD holds the gurney, MSP rescues people from the Blatnik while DFD holds the gurney. What is coming next at DFD? Is DFD going to go to the Damiano and recruit poor people to make the chili for the chili cookoff? Come on DFD, what do you people do? And washing your personal pickups and blogging at DCB do not qualify. Oh, I see that Park Point DFDers will be raising the caution flags when rip currents exist by remote control from their bunks. What kind of training do you do to learn this difficult work? I hope that no DFDers quit because of the work load. After all, the batteries could go out on the remote control and you people might have to actually burn a calorie by getting out of the rack to get the flag raised. Pathetic is the only word for all this DFD hosing. |

83790 - Wed Apr 28 21:06:33 2010 - [Can't Afford $82,000/yr+ DFD Bloggers] By: JBBP |
ALL firefighters- volunteer or paid- are brave. Their role in a public safety network is crucial, to be sure. I am personally rather turned off by the bickering about which type of firefighter is better or more deserving. My hat is off to all of them.
That being said, the problem we have with the city firefighters is: we can't afford to pay them at the current rate, and we thus can't afford to pay them any more than they currently earn. This is nothing personal. It's just simple mathematics. Not only is our taxpayer base and population dwindling, but we have elected politicians who spend whatever monies we do manage to get our hands on frivolously and largely on their own special interests. These same politicians have also agreed to pay our city workers wages and benefits that the taxpayers cannot realistically sustain- all to keep in power by essentially buying their votes.
Perhaps the better solution to the issue over firefighters' pay could be to pay them a base rate for being on-call and performing maintenance tasks while on duty, with an increase in pay when they are actually called upon to combat a fire or other hazard they are obligated to deal with.
If I recall correctly, there is a difference in pay for our military in times of peace and in times of war, when they are called into combat.
It's not that the firefighters shouldn't be paid while sleeping, washing trucks, cooking, training, etc., as long as they are on duty. You can't expect them to be on call(which is what they are when they're on duty) for nothing.
Base pay could maybe be equivalent to that received by those who perform mechanic/health care tasks as city/county employees. The bonus pay for going out on calls could be set at a flat rate.
Another benefit could be an offer from the city to pay for at least part of the training and education these folks undertake in order to become qualified firefighters. It would attract a more soundly professional base; the city could agree to this idea only when the potential employee is in the top 10% of his/her class.
At any rate, God bless all of them.
Thank you. |

mod; In the perfect blog world what is my salary and benefit package,,also, also, What is yours?? now be honest,if possible, break it down, have you been a firefighter? I don't know what you do, but I bet it is noble and you feel somewhat compensated, I only know fire so I can't speculate on your package.......
MODERATOR: rusty, I know it would make you and the gals feel better to slide out of the fire hall during the many hours you get paid to sleep, come on down to my humble little abode and paint ball the place or give the old dog one in the bean, but sorry, no deal. And what might I ask do you know about fire? All I see is alot of free time to blog and sleep and wash the new pickup on the taxpayer's dime. Roofers and miners have jobs that are way more dangerous. Why do you think that the gals at DFD are entitled to $82,000.00 a year salaries plus obscene benefits? For the blogging or the sleeping? The real heroes of public service are the volunteer fire fighters, police, MSP, and Gold Cross. Now isn't it about time the DFD elevated itself to the professional standards of those that it assists, like Gold Cross and MSP? Time to act professional instead of trying to make others believe that you are professional when in fact, you are not even close. |

mod; dfd training for ropes and knots coming in may, msp training with criminals and unknown weapons in don't know, you probably do...if the person were injured and or trapped dfd would deal with it ,,with msp helping to secure roadway..you forgot to shedule your tour at hq. way to spin it ..p.s. it must have been difficult to tell your children why they cannot be firefighters when they growup, every kids dream....godspeed..
MODERATOR: rusty, nice job of evading the question. As usual, just another DFDer who can't justify the obscene salary that you are extorting through your employer, DFD PAC. Good thing for you gals that MSP and Gold Cross are around to do your work for you. Sorry rusty, my kids understand that performing lewd acts, including sodomy, to acquire employment, such as your employment requires, is nothing to be proud of, but clearly your kids never learned this lesson. Then again how could they with an old lady of your caliber. Poor kids. |

I would like to thank the Rice Lake Volunteer fire department for doing their best at a fire that tragically ended in the loss of life. These people are the true American heroes who for little or no compensation do the work most of us will not take the time to do. For those volunteers who had to see things we can only imagine all the best to you and yours.
I remember how the young ladies father once helped me out of a tough situation and when I offered to compensate him he would take nothing in return. Both the victim and those who tried to save her are the kind of people who made America into the great country it has been.
The following is from the obituary of the lady who lost her life that tragic morning in April: "...in lieu of flowers, memorial may be directed to the Rice Lake Volunteer Fire Department." |

Moderator; lets get some facts straight,I am a dfd'r, I don't contribute to pac (optional), I live in the city limits, and as far as the blatnik bridge, if you read the article it somes up the call completely, emergency services helping each other with their specialties, cut and dried..lastly now you know more about me, stop by HQ and introduce yourself and get a tour.....or stay and hide as the Mayor of Blogsville.....
MODERATOR: rusty, I assume that you are referring to the Minnesota State Patrol when you said, "emergency services helping each other with their specialties." Umm, I have never heard that this type of job is a speciality at Camp Ripley for MSP. Maybe you can show us your knowledge and tell us all in which week of the MSP academy this type of training occurs. This should be part of the DFD responsibilities, but now that DFD has become a political organization, all they seem to want to do is blog, elect pooliticians to help them get more taxpayer money for nothing, grill brats, run to Subway, help Gold Cross carry the gurney, and now, watch MSP do the job that DFD should be doing. I can see that the DFD speciality is watching others do the work that DFD is getting paid to do. |

The structure fire out west was buring on at least 2 of the 3 floors when our department arrived. The house is not a total loss because 21 professionally trained firefighters responded and risked their lives. Had a volunteer service responded, the house would have been a total loss.
Duluth is lucky to have us. BTW, the St. Louis County Rescue squad is a bunch of wannabee Duluth Firefighters who can't pass the test.
Mr. Dodge st, if your so smart, how many calls did 6 hall have this month because last month you spouted off some numbers which were not accurate, just like most of you right wingers on this dumbass blog |

MODERATOR: rusty, you are a great representative from the DFD PAC, formerly known as DFD. Once you gals became a political organization instead of a FD, you lost a lot of respect. Whether bankruptcy or bankruptcy comes Duluth's way, things will change and your hosing of the taxpayers will end. But in the meantime, keep up the good work! Hey rusty, were you one of the lame DFDers who was afraid to climb down under the Blatnik Bridge and left the job up to the Minnesota State Patrol to handle instead. So much for your DFD training huh? Stick with saving basements and blogging. |

You are part of the reason that people hate the fire dept. You will someday be knocked off that "high and mighty" pedestal you call being a government employee. Your rhetoric, name calling and un-appreciation for people who dedicate more than you ever will is getting tiresome. I would put the St. Louis County rescue sqaud up against you guys any day of the week. You would be humbled...or maybe you tried to get on and they wouldn't take you...
Look in the mirror you idiot and take a good look at why anyone on this blog would like you...you are creating your own destiny here. By the way, when using the word there in a possesive form, it is THEIR. |

The consequence management response team.; ie the new army civilian unrest brigade.
http://www.armytimes.com/news/2008/09/army_homeland_090708w/
....this new mission marks the first time an active unit has been given a dedicated assignment to NorthCom, a joint command established in 2002 to provide command and control for federal homeland defense efforts and coordinate defense support of civil authorities...
...They may be called upon to help with civil unrest and crowd control or to deal with potentially horrific scenarios such as massive poisoning and chaos in response to a chemical, biological, radiological, nuclear or high-yield explosive, or CBRNE, attack.
Training for homeland scenarios has already begun at Fort Stewart and includes specialty tasks such as knowing how to use the “jaws of life” to extract a person from a mangled vehicle; extra medical training for a CBRNE incident; and working with U.S. Forestry Service experts on how to go in with chainsaws and cut and clear trees to clear a road or area.
The 1st BCT’s soldiers also will learn how to use “the first ever nonlethal package that the Army has fielded,” 1st BCT commander Col. Roger Cloutier said, referring to crowd and traffic control equipment and nonlethal weapons designed to subdue unruly or dangerous individuals without killing them....

83766 - Tue Apr 27 12:40:57 2010 - [Union Way Reinforces Mediocrity] By: DECCUnion |
Democrats assembled at the convention floor Saturday were unified among what they wanted: universal health care, equal rights for gay couples and food.
Holiday Inn, which supplied boxed lunches for the delegates, ran out of food several times, leading to the day’s loudest grumbles during a convention that stretched on for hours.
The problem, said Holiday Inn General Manager Lisa Augustine, was that they didn’t anticipate the demand. During the last convention in Duluth four years ago the Holiday Inn sold just under 840 boxed lunches. But 816 lunches sold on Friday alone, with another 980 sold on Saturday before they were gone.
“We just didn’t expect this,” she said.
While the Holiday Inn did start bringing in pizza, Augustine said once supplies were gone Saturday night, they would not bring in more. Some convention goers were bothered that the DECC concession stands weren’t open.
But Augustine said the DFL Party requested only food providers that were union organized, that meant the DECC, which is non-union, couldn’t provide food.
“Our property is union,” she said.

Rusty if you would look around the house on 66th and then look around house on Rice Lake Road that burned you might notice something different between the two. Perhaps the fire in Duluth at 66th would have had the loss of life if it had happened in the early morning hours and people had been sleeping. The people that reported the fire would also have been sleeping. My point is it doesn't matter whether you have a volunteer fire department or a fully staffed professional fire department. People die in house fires.
I've said before if you want to keep yourself alive then take step on your own to insure you protect yourself and your family. Done leave junk lying around inside your home. Have working smoke detectors etc.
The last time my spouse and I drove by the house in question on Rice Lake Road just days before the fire we decided no one had lived there for a few years. Think about it! |

Just up from the secretary's house. Looks like the structure fire out west destroyed the house and it was 7 blocks from the west Duluth fire station. 7 fricken blocks away and the house is destroyed.
What Simonson and his other union thugs will say is we need more firefighters and we should probably build another fire station out west so we have about one fire station every couple of blocks just to make sure we have the entire city covered and because Duluth is geographically laid out different than most cities we need more firefighters.
They most expensive fire department in the nation saved another basement. The fire department cost us taxpayers almost $50,000 per day and they get to sleep, wash and wax their cars and other toys etc.
Time for a change Strongitharm and time for the fire department to be scaled back.
The fleecing must stop. |

83754 - Mon Apr 26 19:43:43 2010 - [Basement Savers give it their all!] By: Cynic |
"Fire extensively damaged a Duluth house Sunday evening."
"A neighbor reported smoke coming from the house at 19 South 66th Avenue West shortly before 7 p.m. When firefighters arrived they found the two-story home filled with dense smoke and with flames burning through an exterior wall by a fireplace. Intense heat and fire was encountered on all levels including the basement. At one point, firefighters needed to back out of the basement due to the heat and the exploding of several hundred rounds of ammunition.
Firefighters conducted a search for the home’s two occupants and their pets. Firefighters discovered the owners were not home and a cat that was found inside appeared to be unharmed.
Initial loss estimates for the structure and contents exceed $100,000. Flames burned and charred wood framing for part of the first floor and the exterior wall alongside the fireplace and extending up to the attic. Heat and smoke damaged most of the building’s contents.
Fire crews remained on the scene for more than five hours. The Fire Marshal's Office is investigating the blaze." |

83748 - Mon Apr 26 11:33:49 2010 - [No business plan just lots of spending] By: Mr. Democrat |
As most of you know, the city of Duluth must have some extra money sitting around in these tough economic times. Duluth is looking for a NorShor experience to say the least when they vote on buying the NorShor Theater and Temple Opera buildings. Why is the city spending the money on these ventures through DEDA?
Maybe our elected city officials think this is a good investment. I think they need to show the people why this is a good investment. I call those people out now to do this tonight at the city council meeting. I bet none of the supporters have a plan and just go with what a few want. If a person was to finance such a buy, he or she or them would have to show the bank how they are going to get paid, a business plan. I want those who support this to come forward now and show why the city needs to invest in these properties. These properties should go on the open market.

@ Can't you see the light. The DECC food service is union controled. The DECC has no choice, all food service according to a legal contract has to be provided by the union. It's a miserable failure and it sucks. It's no wonder Duluth has difficulty attracting conventions to this area.
There is also another reason why they ran out of food.
The reason: Margaret Anderson Kelliher. |

Check out Ne$$ and his BS.
WTF does Ne$$ know about real estate, remodeling and development?
http://www.perfectduluthday.com/2010/04/20/more-norshor-details/#comments
You can't make this stuff up! Check out the other comments.
"If only the Duluth News Tribune discussion was so calm and thoughtful as the discussion at Perfect Duluth Day! Many of the DNT posters seem really upset about spending 2.6 million on this instead of roads (or whatever the poster thinks it should have been spent on). "
What reality do these people live in? What kind of dope does one have to smoke to come up with stuff like?
Have you ever seen “It’s a Wonderful Life”? We see what the city would be like if private enterprise took over (it becomes Pottersville). As in the movie, there would be a lot of strip clubs, drugs, alcohol, and gambling in Duluth with minimal government and control by private enterprise, since that is what makes the most money for private enterprise.
Fargo is a good example of a city where the government development of downtown made the community stronger. Government should provide for basic needs – health care, child care, education – and for any other communal good that the people want. Most Duluthians want more than a minimalist government, and so there are democratic reasons for the government to do more than the minimum. Government can do good beyond the minimum, and I think “It’s a Wonderful Life” gives us a sense for what that is. We want Bedford Falls, not Pottersville.

83740 - Sun Apr 25 13:28:14 2010 - [The powerbrokers pal around with] By: Chester Park Watch |
http://www.areavoices.com/buzz/?page=comments&blog=76829
Danny, I'll try to explain in simple terms why I think there's more support than opposition to the city purchasing the Norshor: there's all sorts of naysayers on the various local blogs writing against the sale of the Norshor Theatre.
These are the very same blogs on which you've been pushing your FB group. Yet only 10 people have joined your FB group. And one is a known sockpuppet. Tell me why only 10 people joined your group when there are "multitudes" on the local blogs voicing sentiments similar to yours?
Re this "us vs. them" fight you bring up: aren't you the same Danny G who wrote a letter to the editor of the DNT in Nov. complaining about those nasty progressives (you called them some silly and insulting name that never caught on) who weren't supporting your chosen candidate? Your letter didn't say a lot about your candidate, you were too busy focusing on everything you didn't like about Patrick Boyle and his supporters.
Whoa, Danny, talk about making that race all about "Us vs. Them." So when you complain about "Us vs. Them," I have to laugh, because your hypocrisy is so blatant.
I think I'm extremely effective in accomplishing the goals I'm fighting for. That's why the right-wingers in this town are so afraid of me. After all, I support the sale of the Norshor to the city. So what did I do? I wrote a letter to the City Council, I'm talking it up to my friends, I wrote an LTE, but Chuck won't print it, b/c it's not been 30 days since my last letter.
What are the opponents to the sale doing? Well, they're obviously not writing letters to their councilors, b/c Brandon tells us that of the huge numbers of letters the Council has received, only one is against the sale. Instead, those opposed to the sale are complaining about *my* letter to the City Council and disparaging me with the same stupid meaningless insults on their silly and very ineffective blog. The powerbrokers in town I pal around with laugh about it, b/c it's become a total joke.
OK, focus on my letter, DCBers, it's not helping your cause *at all.* But I do feel very important that, of all the letters city councilors received, only two were forwarded to that right-wing blog -- and one was my letter!!!
But I do have to thank the DCBer who's obviously saner than the rest, who said that I got it wrong about that vibrant area in Omaha I referred to in my letter as having once been the meatpacking district. It's called the Old Market. It's got these great shops and restaurants in what used to be industrial buildings, and cobblestone streets.
I assumed it was previously the meatpacking district, but maybe it's where the animals or the meat actually was sold? Does anyone know? Whatever. That person saved me from making the same error in the future, so thanks. I guess, sometimes, there are nuggets of wisdom hidden among all the idiocy posted on that blog.

| Funny story in today's lib reader (online) the DFLers ran out of food twice. That occured because they insisted on union people providing it. They had a food outfit at the Decc itself, but wasn't good enough for them. Another story about how good unions work. The employees were probably on a coffee break. |

Subdude post this link on your site. DFL Duluth's reputation is building across the country.
http://www.freerepublic.com/focus/f-news/2496778/posts
Some of the comments about DFL Duluth include the following:
1. If you are planning on coming here, you may want to go elsewhere to spend your money.
2. IMO, these useful idiots don’t deserve to be called Americans.
3. Al Franken type of Minnesotans, eh?
4. Duluth, I believe, produced the tycoon who founded Geno's Pizza and other frozen packaged foods. At one time, he had his main packing plant in Duluth out of hometown loyalty. But he got fed up with the libtards and the lack of work ethic which they fostered and moved operations to Fargo, N.D., where my sister worked a summer or two to earn money for college. As the business grew, I heard that he later tried to reopen operations in Duluth with the same result. I don't know if this is true or not, but last I heard, the operation in Fargo was still thriving.
5. I stopped visiting the Duluth area years ago. The lefties in that area are just hateful people.
6. Remember that the wunnerful folks in Minnesotastan found the means to fraudulently send the fraud Al Franken-Stan to the US senate.
7. Another Goon Squad operation no doubt.
8. “I stopped visiting the Duluth area years ago. The lefties in that area are just hateful people.”
9. Coincidentally, I've debating flying my wife and kids from Portland, OR to Duluth for a cousin's wedding in early October. My decision was just made easy! Thanks for posting. Now I'll just send them a slightly nicer gift.
10. If this is what “Minnesota Nice” is, then, how do I get out of this Chicken-Sh*t outfit? |

83721 - Sat Apr 24 03:45:40 2010 - ["Correspondent" is dead wrong AGAIN] By: Wolf |
In regards to Claire K.'s references to Omaha, she is dead wrong. First, the meatpacking industry was never located in downtown Omaha. It was located in South Omaha, and only one building was renovated. Yes you can stand on any floor and have the following views: To the east is run-down South Omaha, rail yards, and a freeway. To the south is the Community College and the "Projects", a highly drug and gang infested area. To the west is a meat packing plant, and truck repair facilities. To the north, small rundown retail and meat industry related businesses. The only reason that the Livestock Exchange Bldg was left standing is because it is on the Federal Registry of Historic Bldgs.
I'm not going to get into the "Claire Bashing Drama" on this blog, but if Claire is going to represent herself as a "correspondent", she needs to substantiate her facts before publishing...Journalism 101.
TONY: Wolf, obviously you have been to Omaha and knowledge is fact. I doubt if Claire has ever been to Omaha, let alone accurately write about it. As you point out regarding her usual erroneous writings, Duluthians know she is a political hack and a progressive socialist spinster, but even her opinions are welcome in the free speech zone at the DCB. The question is; what name she will post under next? |

I propose that the same amount should be poured into a renovation of the NorShor and its associated buildings with the purpose of making a world-class strip joint and alternative lifestyle club. Think of the impact that this would have on the local economy, from the flood of tourism money and the retention of resident dollars that may otherwise go to Germany several times per year. Would you rather view a smallmouth bass or a big-boobed babe? |

| It happened once more! The Republican candidate for congress, Chip Cravaack, benefited from favorable media attention, when he was a guest of "Danny Does Duluth." Do you think that Danny would ever have Mr. Oberstar on the show? Of course, it would never happen! So, Danny followed the playbook of the local media by extending an invitation to Mr. Cravaack. It used to be that we did not have to hear from or about Oberstar's competitors until late October. But, I guess Danny, and the rest, like breaking the rules. Danny's interview was so saccharine. He couldn't help but reveal Cravaack as a common man with a glowing resume and the best agenda. Nice try, Danny, but the eighth district has had a rich and aloof representative since forever; that is how it will stay! Go ahead and champion what is best for the Northland, Danny. In the end, I am confident that the apathetic citizen and the clueless voter will score another victory for King Oberstar. Like it or lump it, Danny! I really think that Ashley is the smart one on that podcast. |

THIS IS THE NESS & CUNEO PAYBACK FOR WORKING FOR THE ZEPPA FOUNDATION. http://www.zeppa.org/
THIS PROJECT IS A DISASTER IN THE MAKING.
*** PUBLIC RECORD EMAIL TO CITY COUNCIL ***
Subject: Fwd: Re: proposed purchase of Northshore theater
While I can understand the interest n preservation of the Northshore Mr. Ness is being far from truthful regarding the actual costs of renovation of the structure and as I have been in the tunnels beneath it and above the theaters suspended ceiling walking the wooden catwalks I think i can shed a far better light on the potential investment than some professional city bureaucrat who has never been in the nooks & crannies of the building.
First off understand that you have two HUGE environmental problems in the building a major infill of Asbestos throughout the structure and chronic black mold in the lower levels/tunnels. If Ness intends on supporting his master plan via Federal Grants you well know all of these environmental hazards must be addressed and that alone will eat up millions.
The overall structural integrity of the Orpheum Theater is as well extremely questionable. What needs to be done is for members of the council to tour not the exposed areas but rather to go upstairs into the old Cinema that was installed in the 40s, climb the steel ladder thru the trapdoor and take a keen look at the mess that exists above the Orpheums suspended ceiling and walk the catwalks as I have. First off the masonry is rotted and crumbling badly on the west end of the building. The damage you see externally on the outside is but a small telltale of its internal condition. There is a ancient masonry tiered band shell/balcony on the west end high above the theater ceiling that is slowly crumbling and will require stabilization. Of course to do that likely means the ceiling will need to come out which is a good foot deep of suspect insulation, quite likely Asbestos related.
Seriously to do justice to this project the Theater needs to be restored to its original configuration but understand the retrofitted upper Cinema was poured in place and is fully integrated into the structure.
this is NOT a 2 to 5 million dollar project...by the time everything is said and done the cost will easily break 10 million understand as well the HVAC system in place currently will have to go...its been on its last legs for some time and the fresh air/ventilation duct work is basically non functional...again get above the theater to see for yourself.
The roof has serious issues as well. Above the Theater there are jury rigged catch basins piped off by flexible plastic hose. I can not speak for the stability of the roof but I wouldn't advise jumping up and down on it having seen its underside The front marquee restoration alone will likely cost a hundred grand or more as the electrical system is utterly fried I do want to see this magnificent structure preserved but that said the community should be aware of the financial burden involved and it WILL be steep why do you think Ness is trying to sell us a car without even a test drive, muchless a look under the hood?
Here we are in a City that's more or less bankrupt a city that's closing its parks, libraries and limiting services...do we have Millions to gamble?
I can tell the Council this that the rank & file citizens you represent are not interested in bankrolling developers and other special interests. Yes there is a minority in greater Duluth that attend Playhouse productions and the like but most of us would much rather see fully staffed Libraries & Parks that benefit the entire community, particularly our children rather than millions foolishly squandered on a gamble...
and all this done at a time when the economy as well as the Duluth's solvency is uncertain...yet the City is considering throwing away hundreds of thousands of dollars worth of property tax revenue as well? Madness, pure madness.
In closing I want each of you to ask yourselves the same question...would you buy a car without looking under the hood or test driving it? Would you buy your next home without going down the basement:? This is what Mayor Ness & Ringsred are asking you to do as stewards of the peoples money.
The question you must answer for yourselves and each of those you represent is why? Whats the rush? Why is the Mayor and Ringsred to determined to ram this down the peoples throats without even the most basic of inspections...
I know what they are hiding, I have seen the deplorable state of the upper and lower levels with my own two eyes all I ask is that you examine all the evidence prior to signing on to such a scheme thank you

*** PUBLIC RECORD EMAIL TO CITY COUNCIL ***
Dear councilors:
I am writing you both as a taxpaying homeowner in Duluth and as a tenant in the Temple Opera Block building to urge you to vote to purchase the Norshor and the Temple Opera Block from Dr. Ringsred. Even though the price seems a bit steep, I do believe that this purchase is an investment in Duluth's future that is going to eventually benefit all of us who live here.
When I moved to Duluth in 1994, Old Downtown was depressing. Junk stores lined both sides of the street east of Lake. Today, that area is thriving, with a new hotel, restaurants, and shops. People are walking the street at all hours. The only blight in this revitalized neighborhood is the Norshor,
which is a run-down strip club. This building should be the hub of that neighborhood. Instead, it's in danger of becoming an eyesore. We can't just leave it to deteriorate further -- especially when the rest of that area is booming.
I envision Old Dowtown becoming even more of a vibrant area than it's become in recent years, anchored by the Norshor on one side of the street and the Zuccone building on the other. This is the kind of thing that sociologist Richard Florida talks about in his arguments for the kinds of cities that draw the creative classes, which in turn makes a place even more desirable -- which results in more productive people with great ideas moving in -- which is, of course, what we all want.
I've not seen what the renovation of a grand Art Deco theatre did to downtown Fargo, but I have seen what the renovation of the meatpacking district has done to spark a renaissance in downtown Omaha. I think we can do the same kind of thing here in Duluth. It just takes a bit of faith and optimism, as well as $2.6 million dollars to start.
Please vote yes.
Thank you for your attention.

Reader's view: City is ignoring the true costs of ownership while spending taxpayers’ money
Here we go again! The city of Duluth wants to buy the NorShor Theatre and Temple Opera House for $2.6 million, with the majority coming from the Duluth Economic Development Authority’s storefront loan program and a Canal Park Tax Increment Financing (TIF) district loan. In other words: with all taxpayer money. Never mind this money is not being directed toward its original purpose.
Mayor Don Ness said, “What a wonderful concept it would be to have a fully restored historic theater” (“New life for NorShor,” April 20).
I say what a wonderful concept it would be to have the city operate within its budget restraints. The city stands to lose some of the $30,000 per year in property tax income, according to the News Tribune article. But what about other lost tax revenue?
Regardless of how anyone felt about the NorShor strip club, it did generate revenue through liquor sales and employment taxes.
The city claims it will receive $20,000 per month in rental revenue, but what about the costs of ownership? How much will Oneida Realty receive for building-management services? What about utilities? These are large buildings with substantial heating and cooling costs.
Finally, what are the costs of renovation, and where will this money come from?
This seems just another instance of government going into business with mostly disastrous results. I believe this project is doomed to failure, considering the track record. One needs only to remember the Northwest Airlines maintenance facility, the Great Lakes Aquarium and the Sheraton Hotel parking ramp — all solid investments.

It's pretty clear Ringsreds' choice is he either uses the fact that DFL Duluth greed has them needing his property now so they save a million and spend 7 million more on a Casino Skywalk to get their Casino cash kitty flowing again or he continues to try to operate in blight, get his property values crapped on, {why pay the taxes= and his teeth kicked down his throat. However, Ringsred acknowledged that he is a motivated seller. Records show that he owes more than $45,300 in delinquent property taxes, including nearly $20,000 on the NorShor. Ringsred said he will use part of the $2.6 million to pay off those debts. |

There's no way that I will ever think it is funny why Ringsred bashed the City of Duluth and Mayor Ness. Maybe he wants to let go of bad memories.

Court takes up public employees' privacy case
"April 19, 2010 4:23 PM EDT
WASHINGTON (AP) — The Supreme Court appears likely to rule against public employees who claimed a local government violated their privacy by reading text messages they sent on their employers' account.
Several justices said Monday that the employer, the Ontario, Calif., police department, acted reasonably in monitoring the text messages in view of its written policy warning employees they have no guarantee of privacy in the use of office computer and electronics equipment.
Justice Stephen Breyer said he didn't see "anything, quite honestly, unreasonable about that."
While the case involves government workers, the decision could have broader privacy implications. Many employers tell workers there is no guarantee of privacy in anything sent over their company- or government-provided computers, cell phones or pagers."

Reader's view: Oberstar has outgrown his usefulness
In my mind, U.S. Rep. Jim Oberstar is a traitor to America and Minnesotans. He seems to have no regard for Americans who wish to live free and make their own choices.
Three recent bills he voted for he couldn’t possibly have read. It would have been impossible. They were President Obama’s slush fund, better known as his stimulus package; cap and trade, about which experts say if passed will result in a net job loss of 2 million to 4 million; and, of course, the very unpopular health-care bill, a government takeover of our health and medical lives.
In my opinion, Oberstar is nothing more than a mind-numbed robot of Obama’s, signing everything put in front of him without regard to the consequences to the average person. Oberstar lives in a world not known to you or me. He seems to think he lives in a special place where the laws he rubber stamps apply to most everyone else but him. He seems to thinks he is above the law that’s there just for the peasants like us, and he lives and breathes this every day of his life.
Oberstar has said he prays before he votes for important bills. He must pray to the devil. He has outgrown fairness and his usefulness; he should be put out to pasture as soon the next election.

This hateful article is obviously from a person full of hate, insecurity and malice. The article below was in todays DNT. This tin knocker is a classic union thug. Pure and simple.
Bachmann, Tea Partiers aren’t real patriots
According to the March 28 article, “Bachmann fires up conservative crowd,” U.S. Rep. Michele Bachmann, R-Minn., “stole the show” at Mr. D’s bar “while preaching to a choir of like-minded conservatives,” or Tea Party activists. Bachmann said that “all Americans will be forced to have to pay for federal funding of abortions.” She urged Tea Partiers to “pound Oberstar” for his vote on the health-care bill.
I applaud U.S. Rep. Jim Oberstar, D-Minn., for his vote, and I have thanked him for it.
Bachmann said “our federal government owns or controls 51 percent of the private economy.” However, if the feds owned anything it wouldn’t be “private.” Perhaps by “controlled” she meant through the Securities Exchange Commission, the Food and Drug Administration, the Agriculture Department, the Internal Revenue Service, etc. If those agencies had done their jobs under President George W. Bush, we wouldn’t have had the home-mortgage crisis, the Wall Street bailouts and nearly 10 percent national unemployment.
Bachmann comes off as a liar for the Tea Party crowd. From “death panels” to President Obama having “un-American views” and now the claim of federal funding for abortions, she seems to have absolutely no reservations about lying so long as the lies add to her campaign fund and public persona.
Perhaps she “stole the show” at the Republican Party’s 2nd Congressional District Convention in Red Wing, Minn., on March 20. According to Minneapolis’ Star Tribune on March 31, a resolution by Republican state party Chairman Tony Sutton described as “the right of states to secede from the union” came within two votes of passing. Real patriots, those with the Tea Party movement!

83664 - Wed Apr 14 22:52:36 2010 - [MN Power rate increase attendee] By: Dave |
I just got back from the MN Power rate hike meeting. I really don't know what to say about it. MN Power was there, and they rallied on how this is the second time they are requesting a rate increase in like 25 years, and they are doing all these great green things for the area and environment. There was a couple of people who support the rate hike and their stance was that MN Power does great and charitable things in the area, and how they give scholarships to local students.
And of course the flip side was there, as most people there were against any rate hike. Examples of how for some consumers who used the same amount of power a year ago, and now their rates went up 25%. There were some older people who voiced they are on fixed incomes, and this would be difficult. Only person mentioned about the use of funds for bonuses, private jet, or travel expenses.
I am on the side of no increase. If they are a good business, and have good business planning, they need to cut salaries and possibly staff. Lots of people in this recession got laid off, or got their salaries cut. MN Power and Allete need to do the same.
I encourage everyone who could not make it to contact the following person. She is the one in charge of this and all the hearings, and will come up with a determination on what to do. Here contact info is this:

STARFIRE: Dave, I am curious as to whether or not you have also contacted Mayor Ness and asked him why he just agreed to a conract with AFSCME giving the farm away. He allowed AFSCME to continue to collect time and a half for simply carrying their pagers. Any idea how many hundreds of thousands of dollars this will cost Duluthians? Really, the Minnesota Power request is nothing compared to the screwing that the DFD, AFSCME, and ISD 709 are giving us all. If you have not contacted the Mayor, well then, that tells me all I need to know too. Are you planning on attending the Tea Party tomorrow? I wonder how many other government employees will be there. I will be looking for just ONE DFDer, just ONE.

I understand that part of the rate increase for Minnesota Power customers is to go for future costs in developing/implementing technology/equipment that will make energy production more efficient and environmentally-friendly(green). I hear that they want to put up wind turbines.
I may not be correct on this, but from what I've heard, these wind turbines are not so great. The cost to have them exceeds the savings they may produce. I would tend to agree with this notion; who can really predict the wind? And what about the NIMBY people...where will these giant monstrocities be located?
Hmm. Is there anybody out there who can give us a little report on the effectiveness of wind turbines? Investment in something like this seems a little too much like investing in carbon credits, if you ask me.
I'm gonna try to go to the Tea Party tomorrow. I hope the rest of you will do the same.
Thank you. |

Tony, I am in the big city, in fact I beleive we should all live in town, but you know they can't require that,no need we already have the votes....
STARFIRE: rusty, things a little slow at the fire hall tonight? Take out your calculator or use the one on your cell phone, because I know you can't do math in your tiny little pea brain and figure out how many thousand dollars the poor retired people of Duluth are getting soaked for this evening. Have you no shame at all? People have worked their whole lives at FREE MARKET wages only to get their hard earned money stolen from them from the DFD gang of thieves. Shame on you and your gang. BTW, I will consider your misspelling a mistake. Next time, it will go into the trash bin. |

83661 - Wed Apr 14 20:37:19 2010 - [DFDer drops out of ISD 709, finds work] By: rusty |
Lets try again, You say the DFD PAC can buy its politicians, Yet you keep telling us the dfd doesn't even have half of its staff in the city limits to vote, so, say dfd is made up of 150 members and only 75 live in town, it seems like its a bigger picture than that.. the public seems to like our candidates to....
STARFIRE: Rusty, or do you prefer Numb Nuts? Is it not true that DFDers put money and lots of it in a special account called the DFD PAC account? If no, go back to ISD 709 for another 12 or so years and re read my question. If yes, the fact that one or all of the DFD living in or out of city matters not as how much money they give to their sweet, cute, cuddly, PAC. The living out of town issue just shows that many DFDers do not want to pay for the outrageous salaries paid to DFDers, yet they are the recipients of those very salaries. When people say that the DFD PAC buys the election Numb Nuts, it means that the DFD PAC, with thousands of extorted dollars from hard working Duluthians, buys those politicians that as you clowns like to say, "Support Firefighters". I used to have a lot of respect for the DFD until they became a political organization. Now I have zero respect for this bunch of self serving parasites, you included. The DFD PAC is one of the biggest threats to the prosperity of the City of Duluth. As the most expensive fire department in the USA, I welcome you telling me what you clowns have accomplished with all this senseless spending, other than new Ford F250s and new Corvette's for yourselves. How does the city benefit from this multi million dollar scam called the DFD? |

You keep telling me how the PAC buys the politicians. Then you tell me how half of our 150 live outside the city limits. That leaves about 75 votes for the guy we want...Hmmm seems like the public might want the same players we do.....

http://www.rasmussenreports.com/public_content/politics/obama_administration/daily_presidential_tracking_poll
Mr. Obama's approval rating is dropping and is below where George W. Bush was in an analogous period in 2001. Rasmussen Reports data shows that Mr. Obama's net presidential approval rating -- which is calculated by subtracting the number who strongly disapprove from the number who strongly approve -- is just six, his lowest rating to date.
