83654 - Wed Apr 14 15:48:11 2010 - [Unions will stop at nothing for more $$$] By: Kevin
What is with the high number of sexual offenders lately? If this continues, the union bosses will see an opportunity to form a new local.

83653 - Wed Apr 14 14:15:15 2010 - [Coal miners are true American heroes] By: Muffin Top
How many DFDers died on the job in the last 50 years? I'm sure many fewer than coal miners who sacrifice year in and year out for their country.

Rusty chiming in on the coal miner tragedy is a typical DFD low life political move. The DFD has nothing in common with the dangerous coal mining careers.

Coal miners are true American heroes and actually produce something of tremendous value for society unlike the DFD political maggot machine.

The DFD lost its value to the city when it became a political machine overstaffing and conniving millions of wasted dollars for 24 hours shifts, overtime and retiree rip off schemes.

I can live without the DFD. I cannot live without the energy provided by the coal miners of America. My heart goes out to all coal miners and their families.

83652 - Wed Apr 14 13:03:06 2010 - [Power bill low compared to city hose job] By: Cynic
Our property taxes have went up well over 200 percent in the last 6 years. Our Minnesota Power bill has not came close to going up that much. Our power bill last month was $26.00. Under a buck a day for lights, fridge, freezer, small electric heater, well water, compressor, etc. Not too shabby. We pay the city of Duluth more in taxes each month than to keep our lights on.

83650 - Wed Apr 14 09:37:02 2010 - [DFDer needs "reality check"] By: rusty
dear moderator; The coal miner tradgedy is a perfect example of what good working conditions and fair wages will get you through union bargaining and being involved in politics..You make it sound like people should be lost each year in any job to justify there being..Not sure if you have any children, but it sounds like you would rather lose them in a coal mine with unsafe working conditions than have to look them in the eye each day because they work for a fire department involved in a union...Protecting the city when called.....

MODERATOR: rusty, you DFDers love to throw this one around constantly: "good working conditions and fair wages will get you through union bargaining and being involved in politics.." Your DFD PAC has learned that by buying politicians it can guarantee all the money possible for its members, even if the city doesn't have the money. Your team of parasitic DFL grubs does not understand or doesn't care what you are doing to the remaining citizens in Duluth. How can you be so pompous to say that the 50% of workers in Duluth who make under $10 and hour should have to pay for an elite few, the DFD, who have successfully learned how to enhance their lives; buying politicians to ensure their $80,000 a year salaries plus benefits and outrageous pensions? Is this fair to impose this kind of extortion on those in Duluth who are forced to pay for your monopolistic obscene salaries? Don't try to BS the public because many of us know there is no bargaining that goes on with you DFD clowns. You buy the politicians and you force outrageous contracts upon the unknowing public through your DFL bought and paid for politicians. Change can't come fast enough in Duluth. Just because you may have been born in the USA, you are not guaranteed health care, sleeping, grilling, blogging, pole dancing with guys and gals and the multitude of other ridiculous things you claim are "fair" and "just" by simply being employed as a civil servant at the DFD. You need a reality check.

83649 - Wed Apr 14 08:27:46 2010 - [Looking forward to Tea Party] By: 82nd
I'm looking forward to tomorrow at Bayfront. A peaceful rally for the future of this country.
This Tea Party movement is taking a page out of the Democratic/Liberal playbook and they can't stand it. It's called "Community Organizing". I have been waiting for this movement for a long time...

83648 - Wed Apr 14 06:21:31 2010 - [DFD still most expensive FD in USA] By: Mr. Chaos
See folks, MP&L top people ARE WORTH MORE than you little people. They are better than you people too. Get it straight, these people at MP&L are like the people running the medical system and government. Give them their MONEY NOW!

MODERATOR: Mr. DFDer, sorry, Mr. Chaos, I bet you will never find anyone at Minnesota Power sleeeping on the job. In my book, that is one reason to give them the rate increase. A much different operation than our greedy DFD.

83647 - Wed Apr 14 00:19:47 2010 - [Follow the DFDers out of Duluth] By: Big Iron
Since nobody wants to talk to you (2X go figure), Cynic, I'll volunteer my services. Value went down? What did you expect living in one of the armpits of the city?

MODERATOR: Big Iron, not all people have the money that DFD has due to its extortionary tacics of fleecing the taxpayers to death. Most DFDers live in luxurious homes outside the City of Duluth because they want nothing to do with paying for their own obscene salaries and the obscene salaries of other city employees. But, they will continue to steal through their political arm, the DFD PAC, to buy those politicians who will guarantee all the money they can possibly get from the taxpayers and give to the DFD. There will never be enough money for the DFD, never.

83646 - Tue Apr 13 23:52:08 2010 - [Attending proposed meeting] By: Dave
I will be attending one of the meetings in regards to the MN Power rate increase. That is just down right disgusting that they want money to cover costs of their airplane, lobbying expenses, and what not.

MODERATOR: Dave, it seems a good idea for all to get involved in the process at some point. I do, however, have to wonder how many of those who are against MP's rate increase also have contacted their assessor's over the past twenty years. Over those years, the counties have been increasing taxes EACH and EVERY year all while MP had not had a rate hike in around 14 years. Maybe people know it is a waste of time to try to fight agaisnt DFD PAC, DFL, and AFSCME and their hundreds of thousands of dollars of money thes extort from the taxpayers and they use to buy candidates. Just look at the city clowncil and how it voted to approve another maggot AFSCME grub with ALL AFSCME OWNED councilors voting in favor of Stenerson. It does't get any more blatant than that. How pathetic that Duluth would allow such corruption to rule this once beautiful city.

83645 - Tue Apr 13 23:38:00 2010 - [Yadda, Yadda, Yadda from a lame DFDer] By: rusty
Tony, I think you won the shoot out for stupidity.. Just to let you know not all are interested in be an ambulance driver or any other union jobber...To let you know in the almost 20 years of what you call sleeping on the job, it has only gotten busier. Each year as a department we have gained a large percentage of calls..Just like the other emergency services. With this climb in emergencies, it is handled with fewer employees, just like the private sec..I will continue to give Duluth my best, as long as there are buildings to catch fires, cars to crash, and people to render first aid.. This will include working side by side with dpd and holding doors for GCAS when needed....

MODERATOR: Rusty, okay Spanky, you keep on trying to convince others why they should be FORCED to pay for the most expensive fire department in the state. The DFD is nothing more than a political organization these days that continues to buy the politicians of its choice to ram through anything that will help the DFD extort even more money from the fewer and fewer taxpayers. Hey rusty, you jokers talk about how dangerous your employment is, yet I wonder how many of you have written letters to your family's in case of a tragic accident like many coal miners do. Oh that's right, that's not needed at DFD when the biggest chance of an accident comes from falling out of bed, getting burned on the grill, or falling off the chair while blogging on the DCB. Hope you got a good sleep last night, it just helped put Duluth one step closer to bankruptcy.

83643 - Tue Apr 13 22:46:44 2010 - [DFD big money working a few days/month] By: Cynic
I forgot to mention that in the private sector they also will walk up to you without notice union or no union and tell you you are laid off because business is slow or the job is wrapping up. Sometimes they close down a whole shop and everyone goes home without a job. You can be making big bucks one minute and find yourself on the streets looking for a work the next. It doesn't take long for you to eat up all the "big" money you made.

83642 - Tue Apr 13 22:46:19 2010 - [Volunteer FD is the way to go] By: rusty

83641 - Tue Apr 13 22:34:25 2010 - [DFD trying to take down other unions] By: Cynic
I deal with UPS all the time. I feel they have better service and are cheaper than the Post Office much of the time. Although priority mail can be very competitive and rather quick. Either way I have a choice to use or not use their service. There are a lot of other choices out there too like FedEx.

Good for the UPS driver if he can make it in the competitive market place. I once spent time watching one of the operations as I did some other work in the building and it was work, work, work. They earn what they get.

I'm not ant-union worker and never have been. I've been in more than one union myself. I've also worked non-union along side union workers.

The DFD is trying to put other unions workers out of a job. What do you think about that, rusty?

Ariz. House approves concealed weapons bill
By JONATHAN J. COOPER (AP) – 5 days ago

PHOENIX — The Arizona House voted Thursday to make the state the third in the nation to allow people to carry concealed weapons without a permit, sending the governor a bill that would allow Arizonans to forego background checks and classes that are now required.

III. Executive Bonuses
Minnesota Power is seeking to recover an additional $800,000 in executive bonuses through the rate case, including recovery of $557,222 in bonuses for its top ten compensated employees, through its Annual Incentive Plan. Minnesota Power considers the criteria used to determine whether it pays an executive a bonus to be a trade secret. The Attorney General’s Office objects to the inclusion of the $800,000 in bonuses in the rate case, saying, “It is inappropriate to expect ratepayers to fund bonuses at a time when so many ratepayers have lost their jobs and homes and are struggling to get by.” The office notes that, if the company deems the bonuses to be important, they may be funded by ALLETE’s shareholders, not ratepayers.

Does anyone know why citizens are being asked to provide huge bonuses for employees in addition to paying their electricy bill? The cost of these bonuses, which exceed many times what an average worker in this city makes, are part of proposed rate hike. Do we have a choice?

MODERATOR: What news article or information are you referring to?

Cynic: it must be tearing you up inside seeing how much someone can make driving for ups to the cities..Oh the money you spend for deliveries......and they get free health care to boot...cry us a river through your blogmanship//

TONY: Crusty, Duluth citizens and consumers don't have a choice to fund the outrageous DFD salaries, benefits and retirements. Comparing the DFDers who sleep on the job to UPS is so junior league. UPS employees’ work their ass off which is more than I can say for the most expensive fire department in the state.

LIBERALISM IS A MENTAL DISORDER AS SEEN IN HER OWN WORDS:

Claire Kirch

I think it's possible to disagree, without having to demonize Carl and Adam. I don't see eye to eye on many things with them, but I think they're good guys with a lot integrity, and I'd rather be stuck in a stalled elevator with them than with 99% of the Tea Party types, who are scary motherfuckers.
http://www.facebook.com/home.php?#!/profile.php?v=wall&story_fbid=113085562052370&id=1505984479

Claire K. Duluth, MN

From all I've seen of them so far, I consider them little more than a right-wing hate group, composed of people who really don't understand the Constitution and the rights it guarantees of life, liberty and the pursuit of happiness to *all* citizens of this great country -- not just those who agree with the Tea Party's principles -- which seem to be "anti-everything." What do they stand for, beyond the shallow slogans?

I want nothing to do with a group seeking to intimidate elected officials who don't kowtow to them with both implicit and explicit threats of violence. This kind of un-American behavior does more to undermine the Constitution than to uphold it.

Locally, I would like to know what ties the Northern Liberty Alliance has to the DCB, and how many DCBers are active in the NLA and vice-versa.
http://www.duluthnewstribune.com/event/chat/id/1447/start_row/41/

Claire K. Duluth, MN

@ Sarah M -- You clearly did not comprehend what I wrote earlier. I questioned whether the DCB and the NLA overlap. Given that the founder of the DCB -- who says he handed off the DCB to someone else who then handed it off to the current moderator -- is also the founder of the NLA, I think it's a very appropriate -- and even an important -- question. The DCB is notorious for slandering and defaming private citizens and public officials, and trying to deny their fellow citizens their Constitutional rights to free speech without fear of harassment. If members of the NLA are also active in the DCB -- well, that tells me everything I need to know about the NLA's understanding of and respect for the Constitution of the United States of America.

I asked a while back when the last firefighter was killed on duty in Duluth. I see in the paper today it was 1964. I don't think there is a firefighter in Duluth on duty today who was on duty then. Although listening to certain ones on here you would think they loose a fellow fire fighter every week or two. Hell most of them were not even born in 1964.

I'm not putting fire fighters down only pointing out that there may not be as much danger in the job as some of them would like you to believe. I thank those that quietly do their job and don't blow smoke up my rear.

I was reading about one firefighter who had died of the flu and it was recorded that he had died on duty. Reason being he was on a call where they had entered a nursing home and they said he caught the flu there. If he had gotten his flu shot BTW he would not have died. I wonder how many janitors have died in nursing homes from something they got infected with and it was not considered a death while on duty.

I once observed the Captain of a ship getting a commendation for his actions during a rescue in horrendous weather and seas. Hell he was sea sick in his stateroom the whole time till the ship was returning to port the next morning. Go figure.

The public seems to need heroes so we must give them one every now and again whether the person has earned the honor or not.

Let it be known to all. The writer of the tripe below is an avowed enemy of the United States Constitution, specifically the 2nd amendment. This "C" apparently suffers from a variety of mental disorders including hoplophobia. Sheez!

The following is from "Brandos" blog. http://www.areavoices.com/buzz/?page=comments&blog=75490

James S Duluth, my friend -- I think you were born in the wrong century. This isn't the Wild West, and I really would object to someone packing while they sip lattes at Amazing Grace. You seem to be an honorable person, but there are too many whackjobs out there packing.

I'd really rather not get caught in the crossfire if some whackjob with a short fuse and a gun in his pocket walks into AG and starts shooting b/c Brandon Stahl bought the last Blondie, and you start shooting back.

We'd all feel safer if there were more thorough checks on people wanting to buy handguns. The answer is not to pack heat wherever you go, the answer is to make it impossible for the bad guys to get their hands on guns in the first place.

And, yes, James S, the people at Amazing Grace are as American as you or I. It's silly to question the patriotism of business owners just b/c they don't permit concealed weapons in their premises.

The Lew Latto Poll

In an interview last Friday on CBS's Early Show", President Obama said the rhetoric employed by talk show hosts Rush Limbaugh and Glenn Beck is "troublesome". He cast Limbaugh and Beck as demagogues who cash in on the fears of Americans struggling through a rough economy. Do you agree with the president?

83595 - Wed Apr 7 18:31:27 2010 - [Vote YES to BANKRUPT the USA!] By: Deep Throat
Dear Sharla,

Last month, our national economy grew by 162,000 new jobs.
That's good news -- but with millions of Americans still out of work and hundreds of thousands of public service jobs still on the chopping block, more must be done to fully turn around our economy.

As a public service worker you know better than anyone how much our state and local governments are hurting. There is no where else to cut, and yet they keep cutting. More federal aid to state and local governments is needed -- and needed now -- to save vital public services and jobs.

There are two important bills that are priorities for AFSCME because they will preserve vital public services and prevent public employee layoffs.

Please contact your congressmember right now. Tell Rep.
Oberstar to support the Local Jobs for America Act and to vote YES for increased Medicaid funding for cash-strapped states. Click here to act now!

http://www.unionvoice.org/campaign/local_jobs_for_america_act/ds5n66w4o7m5w6bn?

Finish the job on state aid: Last month, the U.S. Senate passed $26 billion in aid to state governments through the Medicaid program.

Now the House and Senate need to vote one final time to send the bill to President Obama for his signature. The funding is vital to prevent layoffs of public service workers.

Co-sponsor the Local Jobs for America Act: This bill will save and create one million public and private jobs in local communities this year alone! It will prevent drastic cuts to vital services by investing $75 billion in local governments and school districts. The bill includes $23 billion for school districts to save education jobs and services and maintain schools.

Tell Rep. Oberstar that you and your community can't afford to wait any longer. Save public services and jobs now! Go to:

http://www.unionvoice.org/campaign/local_jobs_for_america_act/ds5n66w4o7m5w6bn?

In solidarity,

Here we go again. I must respond to some mis-statements on this ratty right-wing blog.

What firehall are you referring to Dodge St. If your referring to 6's your figures are wrong. That hall responded to 14 calls for service last month not 10 as you mentioned.

Your just jealous of our work hours and pay which is the reason you hate us so much. We are a professional department and the public appreciates our service and sacrifice.

You right-wing nutjobs don't get it do you. Our Union has to be strong and politically active to counter all the BS flying around town like the misinformation on this blog about us. Democrats understand our passion for saving lives and the risks we encounter every day we arrive at work. I will always respond to anti-fire sentiment on this right wing of a blog. I will even respond when on duty if necessary because my union contract allows me to.

MODERATOR: Pro-DFD, the story problem is 31 day time 24 hours equals 744 hour last month divide by 14 calls equal a whooping 1 call every 53 hours at the Lakeside firehall. Thanks for providing the impressive figures.

Underground coal miners earn $60,000 a year at one of the most dangerous jobs in the world.

DFDers earn over $80,000 a year, unheard of benefits and pensions, get paid to sleep, blog and cater to pole dancers after hours. They like to call themselves American Heroes and wave the flag.

The U.S. just experienced a tragedy with the incident involving the 25 real American Heroes, West Virginia coal miners. Do you think these folks formed their own PAC to control political office like our DFD? Do you think they acted selfishly like our DFD and only looked out for themselves?

Time to wake up people, the DFD, DFL, AFSCME, extortionists will bankrupt you all while they use the lame excuse of necessary public service and safety. How is getting paid at DFD to sleep necessary? Pole dancing?

Each time you drive by a firehall and watch these clowns washing their personal cars on the clock or sending a crew of clowns to Subway, just think about the real American Heroes, not these wanna be parasites. And just think how much money the city is getting screwed out of every night with so many of these DFDers sleeping at full time pay rates.

It shouldn't surprise you that DFD is the most expensive FD in the entire U.S. Millions of dollars each and every year being extorted from the taxpayers by a corrupt DFL regime.

Regime change needs to start right here.

Dump the DFLers and get rid of their corruption and underhanded tactics.

Last Months stats on the firehall near my house was:
8 medicals( all were minor medicals)
2 false fire alarms

Total of 10 calls all month long.
And we staffed this hall 24/7 with paid firefighters sleeping on the taxpayer dime. They were able to clean their vehicles and work on their 2nd jobs while laying around the hall "waiting" for the "big one".
Do you think we could stop the fleecing by using volunteers? Of course.... The DFD is the most expensive fire department in the entire state for a reason. No need to wonder why they have to "buy" their city council candidates. Job security.

Did Claire and BS breakup or what? Looking at BS’s blog, there’s more action in a Siberian senior citizen whore house than on BS’s blog. I miss Cybil, I mean Claire, and her countless monikers and her bathroom reading material.

And if that isn’t enough to make you gag, how about the $200,000/year Daddy Warbucks of the Chamber of Communism sucking up to Dixon and Ness. Talk about total BS as Daddy W is blinded by his suck DFL ass buyoff, aka salary. And don’t forget about number 2, aka mini me aka little orphan Andy, pulling in another 6 figures per year. The COC doesn’t walk the talk as it’s anything but commerce when you’re for every tax increase and pork non-taxpaying non-profits galore. You’ve gotta wonder about the IQ or what's in the cocktails of the members floating in excess of $300,000 per year in 2 big salaries.

Duluth News Tribune

Reader's view: Buy locally to support the community

I appreciate people who choose to buy locally made and locally grown things. Everyone’s definition of “local” varies, and some things aren’t available directly. But by consciously selecting to purchase available items, art and food, while also showing support for local events, we build a better community.

So much is happening in Duluth. It intrigues me how there usually are multiple interesting things happening at once. Where we spend our time and our dollars does matter. Sitting at home to place on order on the Web or to have an item delivered may be easier, but is that helping a local business? There are goods that are made right here, everything from soap to sewn items to music recordings, with local, independent restaurants and stores offering such locally made items.

Use your money like a ticket to be a part of making the Duluth area the best it can be. We’ve got talent, creativity and business skills right here. Let’s celebrate and support them.

83584 - Tue Apr 6 21:05:24 2010 - [And you thought you knew what a loon was] By: Norton Park
Here is a copy of an email sent to the Duluth City Council:

Dear Duluth City Council,

I was recently shocked at how easy it was for T-Mobile and Sitefinder, LLC to fool the entire city council into approving (09-0606 R) which is a 150 foot tall cell phone tower in the Norton Park Neighborhood.

They sure pulled the wool over your eyes. In the artistic photo rendition of the tower that they presented to you, they deceptively showed a close-up of a nearby existing building, with a small tower in the background. In reality this is a huge ugly tower that now blocks the view of Spirit Mountain, Indian Point Camp Ground, the Superior Hiking Trail, the Western Waterfront Trail, the Willard Munger State Trail, and the community of Norton Park.

The construction crew destroyed a nearby trail, leaving it nothing more than a mudslide with huge dangerous pits. The tower has no fence around it so anyone including children can freely climb it. There is also dangerous exposed wireing. There is also no lighting on the tower, which makes it an aviation hazard.

I could find no permits from the FCC nor any environmental or radiation studies. I worked in Duluth's Antenna Farm for seven years, so I know how radiation effects the surrounding area. The tower is near Spirit Mountain and the radiation that will now be absorbed into the metal ski-lifts, should be a concern.

Also, these towers collect dangerous amounts of ice which often falls to the ground. Anyone standing on those public trails when ice falls off of it, will be killed if it happens to strike them. I once seen ice completely crush an SUV in Duluth. It was parked about 80 feet away from the tower.

The community was never properly notified that this tower was going to be built. There was a small blurb in the legal classified ads of the News-Tribune, however the location mentioned was a fictitious name of a dirt path in the woods, so nobody recognized it as being in Norton Park next
to Spirit Mountain. The address they gave was 8505 Knowlton Creek Blvd. Even the official map put out by the city of Duluth does not list this street. The proper name for this mostly abandoned road is Old Thompson Highway. Also the legal ad did NOT mention "antenna" or "tower", but rater
used the word "monopole", which in not a proper discription of the fact that a TOWER will be built there.

The city is well aware that this area is sensitive to Native Americans, yet they never notified the Duluth American Indian Commission of this unwanted intrusion. The only notification went to the Duluth Dept. of Planning & Developement. They recomended the the permit be denied. The entire council ignored this recomendation.

Now we are left with this ugly and dangerous tower that blocks the view of what used to be some of the nicest untouched land in the area.

I want to hear back from each councilor, why you voted for this and why the community was not properly notified of this.

Congressman Oberstar, one of the richest members of the U.S. House, has been a target of criticism because of his vote to socialize health care and federally fund abortions. You rubes just don't get it! His Lordship had spent decades trying to outlive his colleagues so that he might reach a pinnacle of power and prestige, as chair of a prime committee. Had the Honorable Mr. Oberstar voted your will, he might have had that gavel taken from him--after years of having to return to the area to conduct October reelection campaigns. So, why don't you people just get over it? Wasn't it bad enough that the Chairman had to personally spend hundreds of hours in town hall meetings across the region during the year-long debate?

In the DNT I read about the upcoming war protest. Bunch of lunatic fringe people who think they can make a difference.

You'll see one of Duluth's gay councilors there carrying his anti-war sign along with some other people. I'm wondering if the Draft Dodger "Labor world Larry" will be present also.

He'll stand up acting tough holding his anti-war sign when years ago he dodged the vietnam war draft and should have been holding an M16 in defense of freedom. Anyone who ran from the draft like "punk pussy" larry shouldn't be allowed to represent the working union man.

Hope to see your "Labor World" ass there making a fool out of yourself. Remember Larry, Warriors stick together and your NOT a warrior. You failed your call to duty punk!

83576 - Mon Apr 5 10:20:53 2010 - [Congress Should Be the Same] By: Chris S
Finally, some good news to act on!!.

Forward this as fast as you can!

On Tuesday, the Senate health committee voted 12-11 in favor of a two-page amendment that would require all Members and their staffs to enroll in any new government-run health plan..

It took me less than a minute to sign up to require our congressmen and senators to drink at the same trough!
Three cheers for Congressman John Fleming of Louisiana !

Congressman John Fleming ( Louisiana physician) has proposed an amendment that would require congressmen and senators to take the same healthcare plan they force on us (under proposed legislation they are curiously exempt).

Congressman Fleming is encouraging people to go on his Website and Sign his petition (very simple - just email).

I have just done just that at:
http://fleming.house.gov/index.cfm?sectionid=55

Please urge as many people as you can to do the same!
If Congress forces this on the American people, the

Congress should have to accept the same level of health care for themselves and their families.

To do otherwise is the height of hypocrisy!

The last auto plant in California just shut it's doors. The Toyota plant made it's last vehicle. Thousands more out of work. This is what happens when a state continues to spend and spend and the elected officials continue to put unreasonable demands on production without thought.

Now, lets take a look at what is happening in our backyard in Duluth. If it wasn't for Pawlenty our state would be next in line behind California because we have the same liberal politicians as they do. A new slogan "it's got to be a November to remember"

It doesn't matter where you buy your car if it has a factory warranty the work has to be done by any dealer of that model. It does not matter "where" you purchase the car. You can take it right into the dealer who wouldn't give you a deal and if it needs warranty work then they will do it with a smile as they also make money off warranty work.

83551 - Thu Apr 1 18:12:34 2010 - [Save thousands and spend elsewhere!] By: Dave
rusty, you must be one of those DFL union guys, right? You do know if I buy a Honda, any Honda dealer has to service, if I buy a Ford, a Ford dealer has to service, and so on. That is the way it works. It is not my fault that the dealer here in town does not want to deal. I saved 3,000 dollars going to the cities, because there is this thing down there called competition. You know, something the DFL and democrats hate.

T-Paw has said that LGA for Duluth is more, and Donny boy is complaining that there are cuts to LGA. Who do you believe, the one that want a state balanced budget, or the one that spends like a drunken sailor, and puts all his effort into Google.

TONY: Rusty, another moderator posted your earlier post but I will weigh in on your question.

The DPD is not involved in self serving politics unlike the DFD. You sound like a little boy whining, "why don't you ever include the DPD". Grow up little boy! Grow a pair and develop a few new brain cells; otherwise take your ballass ways over to PDD!

The DFD PAC and leadership are going the wrong way. When the DFD gets out of politics they will gain some respect of their critics. Have the brainwashings made that so hard to understand?

Hey Dave, enjoy your new car, others probably went to the cities also to get theirs, probably why you can't get a deal locally. Please use your cities dealer for warranty work, see how that saves you time and MONEY.......

MODERATOR: rusty, just think, one day the AFSCME, DFL, DFD PAC pukes can chip in to help each other out to make it. Of course that will never happen because they are too greedy to help anybody but themselves. Their greed is what is forcing people to move away and to spend their hard earned money elsewhere. Why would any sane person willingly help Mayor Ness and his DFL team carry on with their fleecing of the taxpayers just so that a very few can live the so called dream. The Mayor just agreed to a AFSCME contract that gives the farm away to the DFL parasites by continuing to allow them to get paid for doing nothing and now cries that he will have to raise taxes because the Governor has the balls to try to stop this outright theft of LGA money by useless DFL mafia organizations like DFL Duluth. Wake up rusty, things ain't going to be the way they have been for the last few decades. We are getting closer and closer to the day when the government elitist will have to face reality. What is it going to be rusty? More DFL theft? Force more retired folks out of their homes so that a few DFL elitists can enjoy the good life? Not me. I encourage everyone to follow the lead of Ken Leffler Kemp, AFSCME union thug, and head over the bridge to spend your money and help put this DFL monster out of its misery. Then we can start all over in the real world. Yes we can! Help the DFL bankrupt Duluth. Spend anywhere but DFL Duluth.

We have got involved in a war with a country of warriors who are 600 years behind the rest of the world in development but are probably the best warriors alive today. They will fight us for 10,000 years or as long as we choose to stay in Afghanistan. We are a country going broke and the war in Afghanistan is only quickening the process.

Ohbomba is a bigger fool than Bush. What would I have done? Left Afghanistan as soon as the tall bearded one did.

Ok. Honestly, today's episode has got to be one of the signs of the upcoming apocalypse. After years of barbs, jabs, and online run-ins we finally have a guest on today's show who was brave enough to step up to the plate and for that she has our utmost respect. That's right, folks. No stupid fake voices, no first initials equating to a double entendre. Nope. THE Claire has agreed to be a guest on today's episode of the Northland's most-important podcast, Danny Does Duluth. The conversation between Claire and Danny is almost secondary to the fact that she even showed the courage to come on the show. But that doesn't mean you shouldn't listen anyway. I'm quite sad about Advanstar laying off 100 or so workers.

This affects their families and our communities. Duluth can't afford to lose anymore companies. With the DFL (dumb fxcking liberals) in charge telling us how much to pay workers I suspect more companies will be leaving.

Hope your happy Ness and company. This will be the first of many.

It is reported that 1100 cities have applied for the Google Fiber prize. If Duluth loses out, Mayor Ness should resign and not seek election to another term. This is a test of his leadership.

STARFIRE: Anti Googler, Mayor Ness is bankrupting the city and has shown no signs of resigning because of his failed leadership. It would seem that the Google gig failure won't make step down either. He gets paid whether the city is prosperous or heading into the gutter as it is now. Why in the world would he care?

He may have not fought in that fraoud war but he has been fighting for good union wages for over thirty years. And his paper is better reading than the news tribune anyway. go larry

MODERATOR: James D, I know what you mean. The progress of the DFL is everywhere. Look no further than the $1,000,000,000.00 debt that the local taxpayers are facing to the wonderful mayor and his negotiating abilities. He negotiates a contract with AFSCME which pays people to get time and a half for picking their noses and turns around and tells the taxpayers that they are getting such a great deal. Makes perfect sense in DFL Duluth.

Ben Dover (BTW thats a gay porn star name) , what's with your negativity and hate? Mayor Don Ness is working hard to do great things for this city. Your snarky comments are not appreciated. Why so negative Ben? Duluth is rapidly changing and great things are on the horizon. Google fiber is a wonderful example of capital investment that will be interested in Duluth thanks to the leadership of Mayor Don Ness. Don't underestimate Mayor Don Ness and his leadership ability, he was both Central high school and UMD class president! He is making a difference. He has taken the initiative to make Duluth a better place for us all, including you Ben. Progress has been continually blocked by right wing obstructionists at the state capital. The right leaning city council is a further obstacle to progress in Duluth. The next council election will hopefully transform the composition of the council from a corporate leaning direction to a more development oriented direction. The best thing you right wingers could do is get the hell out of the way and allow investment in Duluth.

MODERATOR: Randy L, I'm not sure exactly which Duluth you live in, but the one I know about is still located in The DFL Peoples Republic of Northeastern Minnesota. Maybe these DFL Assclowns are more clever than some think in regards to bringing Google Fiber here. They may be planning to bring in Google Co-founder Sergei Brin to Duluth and know that after he travels around our fair city on our wonderful road system and experiences a bent rim or two on his BMW, he may have flashbacks to his native Russia and be so humored by the similarities between Duluth and his former Soviet Union, that he may decide to support the project. He will see the DFL Duluth cronyism, dilapited buildings, stagnation, one party political system, DFL mafia similar to CPSU, no jobs, no change, no hope. That may be part of the Mayor's plan.

83530 - Mon Mar 29 20:01:49 2010 - [Pre-payment required in world class city] By: Ben Dover
I heard Donny Boy Ness refer to Duluth as a "Forward Looking" city lately. He also likes to refer to Duluth as a "World Class City."

Maybe Donny Boy was referring specifically to the taxi cab drivers in Duluth who will now require pre payment from Donny's "World Class" Citizens. The World Class Citizens can now be "Forward Looking" and make sure that they have enough spare jing to take a cab in Duluth. I don't blame the cab service as they are sick and tired of some of Donny's finest citizens expecting to ride the cab for free too. Maybe next year Donny can make a statment at his "Dismal State of the City" address and inform some of his free riding DFL base that riding the cab is not like all the rest of the things that they can and expect to get for free in DFL Duluth, including housing, food, and everything and anything else they may want in exchange for their vote when he or his cohorts are running for office in DFL Duluth.

On even better news, China has now purchased Volvo as part of their buying up businesses from the dying West. It is not all bad news for the West as the U.S. just placed 21st in Science and 25th in Math in the world of high school aged students. We did, however, place FIRST in spending!!! Nothing like the enjoyment of a DFL rate of return. Spend the most and place 25th!!!

We're number 1!!!!

Keep spending, the government employees need more money as the mothership sinks to the bottom. Keep voting DFL, they seem to be doing a great job at getting us there quicker.

Enjoy the show as it will undoubtedly only get better.

President Obama showed lots of class visiting troops in Afghanistan.

He sent a surge of military men and women into harms way to secure the county Afghanistan like Bush did in Iraq. It worked with flying colors in Iraq and I have no doubt it will work again in Afghaninstan.

Obama is letting the Generals run the war not the politicians run it like the war I fought in Vietnam.

Remember Vietnam "Labor World Larry". That's the war your country called on you to fight in and you "ran" like a chicken in a northerly direction. You truly are a sad human being. I went to Union rallies with you and held up signs supporting our Union only to find out you ran when our country called on you to fight for her.

Your a pure disgrace to all union members Larry! You act tough and talk tough but your a true "punk pussy". I refuse to even read any part of the "Labor World" when I get it because of you. I knew you and the rest of your family as we were neighbors near 8th st.

You are a disgrace to Labor and Unions. Please do us all a favor and leave as the editor because your a pussy who dodged the Vietnam War draft when your number came up. Many Union members are aware of your past even as you tried to hide it for many years. Please don't talk "tough" anymore because you've been exposed for the fraud you are and that is a "draft dodger". You and Steve O"neil can kiss this Veteran's ass.

Do the AFSCME Loffler-Kemp and go to Menards in Superior and don't use union labor. Save 2% on your building materials or go to the Menards in Hermantown, anywhere but DFL Duluth.

Buy on the internet and save big dollars.

Support your neighborhood rummage sales and PAY NO DFL DULUTH TAX.

AFSCME and the DFD lead the way in a glut of OVERPAID NON-PRODUCTIVE JOBS and OVERTIME ABUSE and a water and gas department that doesn’t come close to other Midwest cities in the price you pay.

Duluth’s sales tax revenue drops 7 percent in 2009
Local residents and visiting shoppers bought less in Duluth last year than in 2008, pushing the city’s share of sales tax down nearly 7 percent from the previous year.
By: John Myers, Duluth News Tribune

The 2009 sales tax revenues were also 10 percent below what the city had originally budgeted for. But city officials adjusted that budget throughout the year as the numbers kept coming in lower.

“We budgeted based on what we saw happening throughout the year, so there’s no budget shortfall "at this point
because of this,’’ said Brian Hansen, city treasurer.

The city’s final 2009 tax revenues were released Wednesday showing the recession had a significant impact on spending and city revenues.

“Recessionary pressures continued to negatively impact collections throughout the year,’’ the city’s tax report noted.

The city received $10.8 million from its 1 percent general sales and use tax last year, down 6.8 percent from $11.6 million in 2008. It’s the second year of decline after the city’s revenue peaked at $11.6 million in 2007 following years of growth.

Because the city’s share of the sales tax actually is paid through the state, it’s impossible to link monthly revenues with actual spending, Hansen said. The state’s report is often irregular and disproportionate in certain months.

Hansen said the nearly 7 percent decline is much less than other areas of Minnesota and the nation, adding that Duluth may have weathered the worst of the recession better than expected.

Tulsa, Okla., for example, was down 11 percent from the previous fiscal year while Gainesville, Texas, sales tax revenues dropped nearly 29 percent from 2008. Ohio saw a 9 percent decline in 2009 from 2008.

“It’s not good news that we’re down nearly 7 percent. But I think certainly it could have been much worse,” Hansen said. “It was much worse across the nation as a whole,’’ Hansen said.

The city budgeted to collect $11,315,000 in 2010 from the sales tax, Hansen said, up a half-million dollars from last year but still below 2008 levels.

The general sales and use tax, applied to most items sold in the city, was down more than the city’s two so-called tourist taxes. Hotel-motel tax revenues were down 3.9 percent in 2009 from 2008, while food and beverage revenues were down 1.8 percent.

Pro DFD,

You are a pathetic disgrace to humanity, you self serving, ungrateful, taxmoney grubbing, union pawn! Get real and stop making excuses for your professional scam! Additionally, stop cutting down the volunteers who dedicate more than any "paid" firefighter EVER will! Volunteers do their best and make a real difference in the rural areas with the equipment, training, and time commitments that they are faced with. You are a scam, you know it, so stop cutting down others to try to make yourself look like a hero!

Taxpayer,
It happens often where a fire starts up again after firefighters leave the scene. This is not unusual because hotspots are sometimes hard to find. The Duluth Fire Department is made up of professional firefighters both men and women who put their lives on the line everyday.
I am sick and tired of bloggers on this site who try to destroy our image. We train every day, how many other professions do you know which train every day--none. We respond 24/7 to any call within 3 minutes unlike volunteers who barely can hold a fire hose during a fire because they don't train but once a year.
And finally, my union brothers and sisters put money into our PAC because we want councilors to respect us for what we do and not cut our staff which will put our lives in jeopardy.

To Taxpayer:
I wasn't working at the last fire out west, and I can't attest to what happened there.
However, I can tell you that this fire is assigned an ICR number for the call, and counts as one call. For a full fire alarm response, 7 companies are dispatched, not 9. They are: the assistant chief, a rescue company, three engine companies, and two truck companies. This is counted as ONE run, not seven, as you say.
Please, if you have questions about a fire alarm response, stop by a fire station and talk to a fire fighter. Ask us what has to happen right away during a fire to ensure the best possible outcome, like rescue, fire suppression, ventilation, salvage, and overhaul. You could also further look at NFPA recommendations for staffing and response to fires. Further research would tell you that Duluth is the only city with a professional fire department that has a station staffed by only 1 individual. Most of our outer reaching areas are staffed by only 2.
As far as fleecing the tax payer, as you say, I am a taxpayer. My city portion of my property taxes are far less than what I pay for internet services. I feel that what I get for my tax dollar is by far a bargain.

STARFIRE: DFDer, I am certain that you feel that what you get for your tax dollar is a bargain. For God sakes you are a direct recipient of the fleecing. But how about regular Joes and retired moms and pops who are FORCED to pay for these outrageous DFD salaries and benefits? Unlike you, they cannot force a request for more money from others like the DFD and its political wing, DFD PAC, to pay for a new 3/4 ton Ford pickup or another Cadillac. Paying uneducated employees this kind of money to sleep, barbeque, blog, pole slide, and run campaigns for DFL leftist, marxists, extortionists shows most of us who the DFD really represents.

America's top 10 underwater housing markets
7. Minneapolis-St. Paul
Although this area is far removed from the cities most closely associated with the housing bubble, home prices in Minneapolis-St. Paul inflated significantly in the early part of the previous decade. Real-estate values increased nearly 34% from 2002 to 2006. Brad Fisher, the president of the Minneapolis Area Association of Realtors, says subprime lending played a key role. "Outside of the coasts, the Minneapolis-St. Paul area was one of the higher areas "of
subprime loans," Fisher says. "We have paid a price because of that." The subsequent 29% price decline through the third quarter of 2009 pulled nearly 39% of single-family home mortgages underwater by the fourth quarter of 2009, according to Zillow.
