Mr. DFD'er. We need to cut your fleecing of us taxpayers. The other day there was a fire in Lincoln Park and you and your union brothers had to be called back a 2nd time to put the damn thing out because you didn't do the job right the first time.
The best part of this incident was the DFD counted this one minor structure fire as a total of 9 "fire runs" for their yearly stats because 9 rigs showed up for the original call and the subsequent call because you guys/gals were in a hurry to get back to your beds and watch "backdraft".
The general public would look at those numbers and think there were 9 structure fires when in reality it was one minor fire where the DFD didn't do it right the first time and then had to be called back. And you fleecer's have the guts to continue to falsify your yearly run numbers to justify your jobs.
The DFD needs to change as we can't afford 30 some of you sleeping all night long. Enough already. Your thoughts DFD'er. |

Double Dip-
Fire fighter overtime has been limited greatly due to changes to reduce overtime costs to the fire department. The amount of banked vacation an employee can retain has also been dramatically reduced, with a large portion of what is left at the end of the year being deposited into an individual health care savings account.
Unlike some departments where overtime is decided by seniority, overtime in the fire department is carefully rationed so that all members across all ranks get an equal opportunity to receive overtime.
Furthermore, retirement benefits are paid through PERA, and not the city. For fire department personnel, they are based on the top 5 wage earnings years, so any "spikes" as you say, would be averaged out amongst 5 years. Furthermore, an employee cannot retire before age 50 unless there is a disability. Retiring before age 55 invokes a penalty, reducing your pension benefits. An employee earns 3% a year of the pension benefits. Under this example, an employee working 30 years and retiring after the age of 55 would receive 90% of the average of the top 5 years income, paid out through PERA, not the city. |

Anyone else notice the skewed view of government that Democratic lawmakers have?
They really don't give a crap what the citizens want!!
They have totaly lost site of the fact that they are representatives of the people. Repesentative from the word REPRESENT!
I'll never forget Wellstone, when asked if he felt his voting represented the majority of Minnesotans, point to his heart he said "I vote for what's in here"!
Geraldine Ferraro said on Fox News this weekend when asked about lawmakers representing the will of the majority said, get this, "after a while I found it to be to taxing on me to monitor what the people wanted, so I just voted as to what I felt was best for the country!"
We saw the same thing across the board in Washington this week with the Health Care bill!! |

83497 - Wed Mar 24 09:13:13 2010 - [Sightless Congressman's View] By: DFL BS ALERT |
Oberstar didn't even write this and this is nothing more than BS. Oberstar will be on the wrong side of history when the government can pay the bill and he is underestimating the pro-lifers.
Published March 24 2010
Congressman's view: Health-care reform is pro-life
Health-care reform is a pro-life issue. This legislation makes a difference.
By: Rep. Jim Oberstar, Duluth News Tribune
In the hours leading up to Sunday’s House vote on health-care reform my office received thousands of phone calls on the issue. One that stood out was a heartfelt message from Rebecca Wood of Cloquet whose 28-year-old son had died from a preventable heart condition. In a voice choked with emotion, she explained how he had put off treatment because he could not afford health insurance. He gambled that his financial condition would improve in time to address his heart condition. It was a gamble he lost.
The bill we passed on Sunday might have saved this young man’s life. He could have remained on his parents’ insurance until he was 26 years old, and his heart condition likely would have been caught and treated in that time.
Unfortunately, the Wood family is not alone; more than 44,000 Americans die prematurely each year because they do not have health insurance and cannot afford life-saving care.
Health-care reform is a pro-life issue.
This legislation makes a difference.
Here is what will happen right away: The new law will regulate the insurance industry, banning unethical practices such as denying coverage to children based on pre-existing conditions and dropping coverage for people when they get sick. Consumers will not be hammered by double-digit premium increases, and lifetime coverage caps will be eliminated. Small businesses will be eligible for new tax credits so they do not have to choose between paying premiums and hiring new workers.
Cutting waste, fraud and abuse will extend the solvency of the Medicare trust fund by nearly a decade and pay for additional benefits for seniors. Next year, the new law will start closing the “doughnut hole” in prescription drug benefits that is costing some seniors thousands of dollars every year. Annual checkups and preventative screenings will be provided to seniors free of charge.
In 2014, the ban on denying coverage based on pre-existing conditions will be extended to protect all Americans, and regional health insurance exchanges will begin providing affordable coverage to everyone.
This bill will have a positive impact on the lives of Minnesotans. If you lose your job, you will be able to keep your health insurance or purchase a new plan you can afford. In the 8th District, 8,300 people with pre-existing conditions will be able to get coverage, 1,000 families will be saved from bankruptcy because of medical bills, 56,000 young adults will be able to stay on their parents’ health insurance and 185,000 individuals and 16,600 families will receive tax credits and other assistance so they can afford insurance coverage.
According to the nonpartisan Congressional Budget Office, this bill will reduce the federal deficit by $130 billion over the next 10 years and another $1.2 trillion in the second 10 years. This reform will not add a single penny to the deficit.
Because I am committed to protecting innocent life, I made certain this bill does not change existing laws that ban the use of federal money to provide abortions. It also provides an additional $250 million to aid vulnerable pregnant women to assure they will have the support they need to bring their children into the world. The bill also expands tax credits to help more families adopt children.
Sunday’s vote was one of the most politically contentious events of my service in Congress, but it was not about politics. It was about human life and whether or not we have the courage to value it and protect it in the face of political opposition. We’ve taken action to ensure that more mothers will not have to suffer the pain that Rebecca Wood lives with every day.
U.S. REP. JIM OBERSTAR, a native of Chisholm, represents Minnesota’s 8th Congressional District. First elected in 1974, he is the longest-serving member of Congress in Minnesota history.

I was listening to MPR NEWSQ yesterday 100.5, when I heard a very interesting bit of information.
In the State of California, certain Firefighters, and other public employees were found to be 'Spiking' and 'Double Dipping' their pension funds.
The way this works is by saving vacation time and maybe even sick leave before cashing out just before their retirement.
Then this 'total salary amount' would be considered 'the standard/norm' for their income, on which to base future pension and retirements payments.
Just wondering if this is how this works here? |

RE: Wally World fixing the economy!
They have a lot of tricks up their sleeves to get out of paying taxes and placing extra burden in your average citizen's hands... for example, in WI, they set up one subsidiary to run its stores and another subsidiary to own its real estate. The operating subsidiary pays rent to the real estate subsidiary and takes a tax deduction for the rent, even though that money eventually ends up in the corporation's own pocket. They pull a lot of greasy stuff like this to keep on top. |

After the meeting, the lone councilor to vote against the donation, Kerry Gauthier, said it was a tough decision for him to make.

“I didn’t decide until the last minute,” he said. “I just think that Wal-Mart hasn’t been a responsible corporate citizen in Minnesota.”
1 . Americans spend $36,000,000 at Wal-Mart Every hour of every day.
2.. This works out to $20,928 profit every minute!
3. Wal-Mart will sell more from January 1 to St. Patrick's Day (March 17th) than Target sells all year.
4. Wal-Mart is bigger than Home Depot + Kroger + Target + Sears + Costco + K-Mart combined.
5. Wal-Mart employs 1.6 million people and is the largest private Employer, and most speak English.
6. Wal-Mart is the largest company in the history of the World.
7. Wal-Mart now sells more food than Kroger & Safeway combined, and keep in mind they did this in only 15 years.
8. During this same period, 31 supermarket chains sought bankruptcy.
9. Wal-Mart now sells more food than any other store in the world.
10. Wal-Mart has approx 3,900 stores in the USA of which 1,906 are Super Centers; this is 1,000 more than it had 5 Years ago.
11. This year 7.2 billion different purchasing experiences will occur At a Wal-Mart store. (Earth's population is approximately 6.5 Billion.)
12. 90% of all Americans live within 15 miles of a Wal-Mart.
You may think that I am complaining, but I am really laying the ground work for suggesting that MAYBE we should hire the guys who run Wal-Mart to Fix the economy.

Reader's view: DFL representation working just fine
In an interview with the News Tribune Opinion page and DNTV, Republican Gov. Tim Pawlenty took Duluth voters to task for having the audacity to elect Democrats as representatives. He sarcastically asked, “How’s that working for you?”
My answer is: “It’s working great.” No, thankfully, we don’t have any Rep. Michelle Bachmanns in government; what we do have are intelligent, compassionate leaders who work for all of us, not just some anti-tax group.
The next time Pawlenty takes time out from his presidential aspirations and travels up here, I suggest he close his mouth (difficult for some politicians) and open his eyes.
What he will see is a beautiful, vibrant city that is the envy of many other towns. We have a young, smart, hardworking mayor who is tackling problems (some of which were caused by Pawlenty). Our City Council has its share of conservatives as well as liberals and, in my opinion, is trying to make Duluth a better city. The governor needs to look no further than the success of Cirrus Aviation to see what our congressional representation has done for us.
This country is still recovering from eight years of a single-minded, divisive presidential administration whose apparent solution to most problems was a tax cut, even in time of war. Most voters saw how that “worked” for us.

With the insurance companies being ordered to cover whoever the government tells them to cover the rates sure as hell will not go down. My spouses employer pays a good part of the insurance premium but our part grows and grows and the employer wants to pay less and less. I will be on medicare(which only covers 80 percent) shortly but the way I hear it they are also taking $500 billion dollars from medicare to cover who knows what. Maybe I shouldn't complain just think what's going to happen to the kids and grand kids. Well maybe they can play the money tree for a while at least. |

We have to give credit where credit is due. President Obama and his staff are doing a very good job wrapping up the war in Iraq and ramping the war up in Afghanistan. Even though he campaigned on ending both wars he is doing the right thing. He is listening to his Generals and giving them what they need. I don't agree that it should take 4 months to make that decision to send more troops and I'm sure it hurt Obama because he is an appeaser but he did give the General what he requested. Obama has done very well and I applaud him for that. He is letting the generals run the war not like during Vietnam when Washington DC ran the war. Isn't that right "labor world" Larry? We need to let the Generals run the wars...OH I can't forget you ran north when your draft number came up. "labor world" Larry didn't fight for his country he pussed out. Punk Pussy. 83473 - Sun Mar 21 15:54:45 2010 - [Stop DFL Mafia Exploitation of the Poor] By: Truthism |
Well said Pirate.
The local DFL mafia didn't make any money off of those that they ostracize and harass. They do whatever it takes if you question or oppose them. Ringsred got in the way of the Soft Center and all those news jobs that were supposed to come to Duluth. What a crock as it was a real estate swindle with most tenants relocating from other office space. Ringsred had opposed the status quo many times and don't believe all that's been published in the local tabloid.
Recently they tried to steal the land that the Sheraton parking lot is on. The original amount the DFL mafia was going to pay the owner when it used the power of government to steal private property, was over 10 times less then the land value was ruled through legal process. Ten times less is outright thievery. In this case, David beat Goliath, a rare happening with the DFL Duluth Mafia and its mouth piece the local tabloid.
Here’s a tidbit why Duluth has the numerous problems such as rising crime, crumbling infrastructure, ghetto housing and lots more social and economic problems. Much of this started with Duluth becoming a city of the first class.
Duluth’s city of the first class status made it eligible for a bunch of federal monies for housing, community development block grants, school grants and more.
For certain legislative purposes, pork, state law divides Minnesota cities into four classes based on population.
First Class cities are those with more than 100,000 inhabitants. Once a city becomes a First Class city, it will not lose that status unless its population decreases by 25 percent from the census figure that last qualified it as a First Class city. Only a handful of Minnesota cities meet this definition, including Duluth.
https://www.lmc.org/page/1/types-of-cities.jsp
The DFL Duluth Mafia has benefited with an explosion of AFSCME, DFD and other public union jobs by maintaining its city of the first class status.
If Duluth were to go under 75,000 in population, it would have to say good bye to a bunch of federal monies that keep the public union employees stuffing their pockets for life. Also, productive Duluth area people would say good bye to groups of free loaders who have moved to Duluth and brought their problems with them.
For decades public union DFL mafia greed has been put above the betterment of the community as a whole. They only care about themselves and live only for today, thus the drop in population, tax paying employers, students in schools and so on.
There is direct public union motive to encourage anyone from anywhere to locate in Duluth no matter what they bring with them, crime, dependencies, poverty, and so on. This means more federal dollars and more union jobs and more big money for the union bosses, who take many milions of dollars in salaries from their sheepeople dues paying members.
Keep in mind that if they can’t get bodies in group homes, wet houses, treatment facilities, HRA housing, they will resort to census fraud, whatever it takes to stay at the trough. They exploit the poor for their own benefit. This cycle needs to end.
Pirate, you will never see this in the union tabloid newspaper much like your post wasn’t allowed, but this is the truth in DFL Duluth.

Senate Healthcare bill known as Patient Protection and Affordable Care Act (H.R. 3590) may or may not pass the House. This bill provides deductibles of $2,000 for individuals and $4000 for family coverage. In addition the bronze to plantinum level health converage allows
60% coverage to 90% coverage. I would assume the individual would be responsible for 40% of the bill to 10% of the bill plus the $2,000 to $4,000 deductible. If you decline insurance the fine is $95 in 2014 or $350 by 2015. Including deductibles plus level of coverage you choose, you can potentially pay out of pocket $4000 plus 40% of the medical bill plus the cost of your insurance. So your free health insurance could make your wallet or purse $20,000 + lighter.
The bill can be read here:

The city built four water transfer stations, two near our house. Weren’t these built to correct the runoff problem? Outrageous!
The city has paid out so much overtime that one employee’s salary equals paying for roughly 20 families to get their sewers put in (“Last year, the city of Duluth paid this worker $123,982.56,” March 7). When the newspaper listed the names of the employees and how much they made in earnings and overtime, I found it disgusting because there are hungry and homeless people who could use a few of those bucks. AFSCME was going to strike: That was ludicrous. So many people are just trying to survive and others can sit in their vehicles “supervising” while collecting the mother lode.
We’re making it and doing OK, but others aren’t so blessed to have a great support system like we have in each other. We don’t need much. But to think the city is going to expect people to pay for such a huge project in these economic times is outrageous. Good luck collecting from many others like me.

I’m new to this blog world and wrote this for the Duluth News Tribune Buzz Duluth blog on Friday. It didn’t make the cut, not sure why. With all the level 3 sex offenders and gang members that land in Duluth, anyone with an open mind and heart would agree that Duluth can be such a cruel place for some.
This is what the Buzz Duluth wouldn’t post and I really wonder why. I hope exercising free speech is real on this Duluth blog.
SO SAD
This is so sad.
Really, I do understand that it was Jim Gradishar’s, own decision making that led him to his own demise, but not without an awful lot of help from people who didn't want his likes around.
Was he signaled out for his businesses? Yes!
Were his businesses different than that of the status quo, vile, filthy, ishy? Yes!
Does it lead to riff-raff coming into our downtown area? Possibly.
But then what about the Wet House, Chum, Cozy, homeless living under the freeway, free health care and board. Not to mention the many other bad things that brings riff-raff to town.
So why was Jim Gradishar signaled out, when our own city invites many more to our town, and I don't see people going after them as hard as then went after Jim Gradishar.
It is sad, and was it fair to all? No!
Jim Gradishar are Eric Ringsred are not bad people. They’re just trying to make a living their own way and following the laws and our city government went after him heavily.
This makes me sick, makes me almost cry, and makes me want to leave Duluth.
My heart goes out to the Jim Gradishar family and friends.

The Senate Version of the Health Care Legislation does not support "elective" abortion. Looking at the financial involvement of DFL special interest bought vote that put both Ne$$ and Obama in Office, the lies and corruption to gain and maintain control these two will stoop too, how poorly their politics and lies have served Duluth and America, how their mafia approach to middle class America just keeps degrading Constitutionally promised civil liberaties and freedoms, just makes one wonder if there is really anything TRULY elected or elective left in America! The ghetto on the hill called Duluth was created by those who now through government and bogus non-profit fronts extract wealth and a rental property monopoly that has used tax dollars we do not even have to enable and insure the poor remain comfortably poor. DFL Duluth built it, and they came! With political crooks like Ne$$, middle class blight can be shed off of his conscience easily, as the DFL blessed mafia and media have it all their way. They'll load the gun for you in Duluth and make sure you are harassed enough to have thought of pointing it at yourself, but they won't pull the trigger, they are too cowardly to face the public by being openly involved. They a sit back and smile as they enjoy their sadistic sense of cut throat civility, saying, "everythings just fine." Ne$$$' hard decisions for Duluth are exactly like the Obamination Health Care Reform, they are based on deception through rhetoric, control through corrupt, common sense challenged, economics, and a Socialistic Totalitarism idealology that has resulted in bloody revolution time and time again through history. Eric Ringsred my not be considered a model citizen to those he challenges with direct responsibilty for someone finding the final way out of Duluth instead of the sometimes not so easily found highway way out. DFL Duluth MUST use their self appointed and fiscally privileged condescending attitudes to judge themselves innocent, because judged by their actions and the state of the City, they think their feces does not stink! They are as racist as the KKK in that they think they know better what Duluth needs after 30 some years of their corruption and failure. Donny's Open Door and Obamas' Change are about transparency like a sexual predator is to a grade school playgound! They will continue acting this way until they are forced to face the eventually of a self inflicted judgement that seems to always come "One Term Herb, false degreed Marti Buscagli, and dying DNT" true, "what goes around comes around"! I feel sorry for Ne$$, the nation is waking up, and when Duluth does, he will, for the first time in his life then be forced to make some really hard decisions, start living with what his "quite leadership", {from The Chambers David Ross=, has brought Duluth, maybe even get a real job, or possibly find the highway like so many, around 22,500, Duluthians have been forced by DFL politics to do!

According to the latest reporting on OpenSecrets.org, Congressman Oberstar has raised nearly $900,000 in campaign cash. Half of this amount came from PACs (Political Action Committees). 83441 - Fri Mar 19 15:15:26 2010 - [Vehicle Prowls] By: Locals Gone Wild |
DATE: 03/19/2010
NATURE OF INCIDENT: Vehicle Prowls
CASE NO.:
INCIDENT DATE :03/18/2010
INCIDENT TIME:
INCIDENT LOCATION: Duluth
SUBJECT: Prevention Tips after Police see increase in Vehicle Prowls
BY: Officer Brad Wick, Information Coordinator
With the recent warm weather, Duluth Police have seen an increase in vehicle prowls. Police want remind citizens to lock their vehicles, remove valuables, and report any suspicious activity to 9-1-1.
Car prowls are crimes of opportunity. A car prowler makes a split second decision to break into a vehicle based on the perception there are valuables in the vehicle and making it worth the risk. A car prowl can be completed in a minute or less, with most (not all) occurring between the hours of 10:00 pm to 5:00 am. Vehicles are usually entered through an unlocked door or by breaking a window.
Car Prowl Prevention
Car (or vehicle) prowls are one of the easiest crimes to reduce with increased awareness. The following preventive measures will reduce the chances of being the target of a car prowl:
* Keep the interior of your car clean. Never leave valuables, including bags, purses, wallets, briefcases, laptops, cell phones, loose change or anything that may appear valuable in plain view.
* Don’t store or leave credit cards, identification or personal information in your glove box or anywhere in your car. Remove garage door openers, key cards, and house or work keys from the car so a car prowler cannot gain access to your home.
* If you have to leave valuables in your car, put them in the trunk before you get to your destination.
* Before leaving your parked car, always remove the keys, roll up the windows, lock the car and set the alarm (if you have one). Keep your keys with you.
* If possible, store your car in a closed and locked garage. If your car is stored in a carport or parked near your house, leave an outside light on. Consider replacing the light fixture closest to your car with a motion detector unit. Motion detectors are good psychological deterrents, causing the car prowler to think that someone has seen them when the light comes on. Also lights make the car prowler more visible.
* Create visibility. If you park on the street, choose a well-lit, open space even if it means adding additional street or yard lighting. Trim back trees or bushes that block your view of your vehicle.
* Park in busy, well lit areas. Avoid parking near anything that limits visibility like dumpsters, large vans or trucks, or wooded areas.
* Report any suspicious activity to the police. One of the most important things you can do is to report all suspicious activity to 9-1-1 and encourage your neighbors to do the same.
If your car is broken into or you there is a car prowl in progress, call 9-1-1. With your help, vehicle prowls will go down and police have a better chance of catching those responsible. |

All the other alpine coasters appear to be privately owned. Not so in Duluth where the taxpayer will own, operate, and maintain it. $7900.00 first year gross profit for the alpine coaster, IF, projected costs, and riders are correct? Maybe Ne$$ can do better than Bergson did with the SMDC Parking Ramp,or the Aquarium? How much has Spirit Mountain cost Duluth taxpayers so far? How far does a $7900.00 PROJECTED gross first year profit really go there? What's costs with full union employees operating it? Duluth unquestionably benefits not when cost is compared to the tax dollar investment return or the usual majority of poverty level income jobs these attraction brings. The happy camper here is the Citys' Great Mega Money Tourist Monopoly Mafia as they fill their restaurants and hotels, which they built, with DEDA and TIF financing on Duluth taxpayers also! Just more "DFL Duluth top wage", maid, janitorial, and waitress partime jobs! Why is the Mafia so unwilling to risk their personnal holdings but will break laws, crap on their neighbors, and risk all to avoid paying their fair share in taxes. Shall we talk "Land Trusts", or just what was it the Salvation Army saw through with the "you pay, we play" DFL Duluth Mafia and thus dropped the Duluth KROC Center!? Beware Fiber Fans!
Thousands may well enjoy the alpine coaster ride in Glenwood Springs Colorado. Glenwood Springs is worldknown for it's natural hot mineral springs. Private Mafia enterprise does not own politicians there, there is a "healthy" business atmosphere. People go there to vacation in Rocky Mountain splendor and relax while they soak away the day, unlike Duluth where you either drive past it up the shore to vacation in the true North Shore splendor of Lake Superior or otherwise stop in Tourist Tax Trap Duluth where you will be soaked for anything, everything, and good chances beat up by a soak or two, too!!

The Google Twin Ports (GTP) website has this statement: "Take note of the fabulous area businesses that have given us the support we need to keep us going...!" Might we conclude that their highlighted entities have contributed money or other resources to GTP? The GTP site goes on to say this: "Give them "the businesses your support because we're all in this together!" How might it be that we all are in this together? Have taxpayer dollars effectively made their way to the GTP war chest?
GoogleTwinPorts.com lists Apex as a "supporter." Apex, an organization involved in economic development, describes itself as being "member-funded." A member of Apex is the Duluth Airport Authority (DAA). The DAA was recently awarded aid, for a twelve million dollar project, in the state bonding bill. If we can assume that the DAA has given monetary support to Apex and that Apex has given GTP "support" beyond their imprimatur, has the loop on your tax dollars closed?

Go to craigslist Minneapolis, politics from March 12, 2010. Read Teen profiled, denied care by inept ambulance service, parents watch. Government run ambulance service is not responsible for public safety and they are not accountable to anyone. Approximately 10 million dollars goes out of this region every year to fund other GCA stations across the state of Mn. The public has been lied to and needs to know the truth. The Mayo Clinic does not care who lives or dies in Duluth. This duplication of service with GCA making all the money. When the DFD arrives first and saves your life do they send you a bill? You already pay the fireman and then you pay GCA, you are paying twice. How stupid is that.
MODERATOR: DFDer, the only ones who are stupid are those who keep voting for those DFL, DFD, AFSCME "Bought and Paid for Politicians" who allow you folks at DFD to fleece and screw the taxpayers to death. Being the most expensive fire department in the USA is not an award that any sane person would be proud of having. Spirit Mt. predicts profit on alpine coaster
Spirit Mountain has modest but realistic expectations for its newest attraction — an alpine coaster — during its first year of operation, according to Renee Mattson, executive director of the recreational authority that oversees the Duluth operation best-known for its snow sports.
By: Peter Passi, Duluth News Tribune
Riders enjoy the alpine coaster in Glenwood Springs, Colo. Spirit Mountain has modest but realistic expectations for its newest attraction — an alpine coaster — during its first year of operation, according to Renee Mattson, executive director of the recreational authority that oversees the Duluth operation best-known for its snow sports.
Plans call for the coaster, dubbed the Timber Twister, to open by July, and Mattson projects it will clear just $7,900 during the coming fiscal year, which ends in April 2011. That’s gross profit, after all expenses — including labor costs and debt service on the $2.3 million coaster — are factored into the equation. The projection is based on the expectation the coaster will draw 58,000 people during the next fiscal year.
In the future, with the Timber Twister operating a full 12 months out of the year, Spirit Mountain is banking on the attraction selling 61,000 tickets, in order to make a profit.
Those numbers seem well within the realm of possibility, based on the performance of similar coasters installed elsewhere. Spirit Mountain expects to operate the fifth such ride in the nation and the only one in the Midwest.
Glenwood Caverns Adventure Park was the first place in the United States to receive one of the German-made coasters, which had already become popular in Europe. Steve Beckley, who owns the park in Glenwood Springs, Colo., said that since the coaster was installed in 2005, it has attracted more than 700,000 riders. And the shine still hasn’t worn off the ride, apparently, as Beckley said it continues to draw in excess of 100,000 riders each year.
Lori Epp, director of marketing for Wisp Resort in Deep Creek, Md., said their alpine coaster, which was installed in 2007, outperformed all expectations during its first and second years of operation. This year, ridership dipped a bit, but she attributes that to unusually heavy snows that temporarily forced the coaster out of commission for brief spells this winter.
Spirit Mountain, like Wisp, plans to operate its coaster year-round.
Mike Carlson, director of mountain operations in Duluth, said workers already are beginning to clear a path for the Timber Twister. He hopes soon to select a contractor to grub out a parking area for the new attraction.
Two shipping containers of equipment for the new ride already have cleared customs in New York, and could arrive in Duluth as early as next week, Carlson said.
He said the construction of the ride will be extremely labor-intensive, with a team of eight to 10 workers logging six-day weeks to complete the project once all the needed pieces have arrived.
“Nearly every piece needs to be carried out into the woods by hand,” Carlson said.
Anticipation for the new ride continues to build, with advance ticket sales heating up, according to Mattson. Buy early, and 10 tickets to ride the Timber Twister will run you $60.

I've given the DFD a thank you when they deserve it but in this case it was just some fisherman saving another fisherman. Good job guys. | Just heard that the Obamacare proposal stripped out the Unions request not to tax their cadillac plans. Originally our current healthcare plans would not be touched til 2018 which would have given us time to lobby against any change to our plans. Now it appears that our healthcare plans are going to be getting taxed upon immediately. This isn't the change we voted for. I know many of my brethren read this blog so spread the word. |

One more handle added to the long and growing list. 84 and growing!
Where in the hell does this female find the time to blog so much? Seriously. Most normal working people, those in "working families" have responsibilities to fulfill such as work, family, household chores, spousal duties... It is obvious this woman does not work, she has no apparent need to work and earn money. How else can one travel (multiple countries, multiple continents) , write and engage in such social / political activism with such abandon? There is only one conclusion I can come up with. 83414 - Wed Mar 17 14:56:09 2010 - [Dear Kool-Aid Drinkers] By: I C RED PEOPLE |
Long time, no post here as I moved but read now and then. My friend sent me this and all I could think is not bad rhetoric for $180,000 a year.
Dear Kool-Aid Drinkers,
Our Shining City on the Hill is shining more brightly these days. It does so by design and not by chance. This illumination is made possible, in part, because of two exceptionally strong and courageous leaders. These leaders, Superintendent Keith Dixon and Mayor Don Ness, bring a quiet confidence and resolve to their leadership roles. It is an honor to stand beside these men of character and stand with them as they accept the leadership challenge of addressing problems that plagued our beloved community for decades.
The problems were bequeathed to them by their predecessors and by our citizenry, who were unable to properly address the concerns.
One of these chronic, formidable problems was the financial and structural condition of our public school system. The number of students enrolled in our Duluth Public School District has steadily declining since 1960. While the District made limited changes in response to the decline, its leadership was unable to implement the comprehensive and decisive actions necessary to bring our school system into alignment with the decreased enrollment. That is, until Keith Dixon took on this challenge.
Keith Dixon is exactly what our school district needed. He is a resilient, intelligent and tough minded optimist who believes in providing our children the best possible centers of learning. He has faced adversity and he has overcome the odds all his life. Those who continue to fuel opposition to the Long Range Facilities Plan are hoping to wear down Keith Dixon. They obviously don't know Keith Dixon. If they did, they would realize they will not discourage this person of conviction and courage. When the dust settles at the school building and remodeling sites, our community will increasingly come to realize the benefits derived from Keith Dixon's leadership.
Another protracted and largely unaddressed community problem was the City of Duluth's financial struggles caused by the compounding city employee retiree healthcare liability. It was decades in the making. Yet, it was Mayor Don Ness who took on the formidable task of addressing this concern in a comprehensive and decisive manner. He was publicly and aggressively lambasted by some who were benefiting from the unsustainable arrangement. Mayor Ness, like Superintendent Dixon, took on the problem despite the controversy generated by his decisiveness.
In his first State of the City Address, Mayor Ness quoted President John Kennedy, who said, "We do not take on our challenges because they are easy - we do so because they are hard." Mayor Ness has courageously taken on the hard challenges he has faced during the three years he has led our city.
Keith Dixon and Don Ness share some admirable traits: they lead with a quiet strength, they are humble and, they remain calm under inordinate pressure. I have a quote that I often reflect on when I am in need of encouragement. It reads, "Courage doesn't always roar. Sometimes courage is the quiet voice at the end of the day saying 'I will try again tomorrow'." The quote reminds me of how well Superintendent Dixon and Mayor Ness possess the energy and the resolve to press on with the work before them.
I hope you will join me in encouraging and affirming these two calm, quiet and courageous leaders as they try again tomorrow.
In support,
David Ross

83412 - Wed Mar 17 11:46:44 2010 - [DFL Change = Socialism/Fascism] By: DFL Middle Class My Ass |
The DFL and GOP both, in the last 6 years, have been disgracful in protecting "Middle Class America", but the DFL Change or Reform is too Socialism. The DFL have Congressionally controlled lawmaking for at least three years. The DFL has controled Minnesota lawmaking for decades. The DFL has controled laws and their breaking in Duluth for better than 38 years. With the top 1 % of taxpayers paying 25 % of the tax bill, and controling better than 70 % of wealth, with AIG, GM, Chrysler, General Electric, the drug companies, the union leadership, and lying banks all firmly afixed to the nations economic tit, with Minnesota business taxes being a paid advertisment, South Dakota sell point, with Duluth having a "No" business growth atmosphere, and a State record holding number of low income, Pro DFD should realize that their DFL-DFD obvious, smoking mirrors, means there is fire somewhere! Adding 35 million more people to a Government Socialized controled heathcare system will not change the fact that "The Middle Class" will, like always, be the only ones really paying for it. This is the " Obama Change and Reform" so the "middle class" are ones unable to afford the $10,000.00 deductable policies they have now or the $1100.00 fines for having no insurance. Free enterprise small business, which was the lifeblood of our countries greatness and freedoms, under DFL rule, will, like always, be the victim bombed for this health care reform. It is not healthcare reform, it is the remaining step needed for a final unconstituional, economically controlled, sneaky, reform from Democracy to Socialism. The DFL will risk all to do this reform, knowing that a Democracy loving "middle class" America can be cooked to death in their 2000 page barrel of legally greasy, "middle class" slide to the bottom, Socialism and taxes.
It's too bad we all can't be Congressionally forgiven top tax tier wealthy, be selfish union leadership, or employeed by the Nations now largest but blatantly defunct industry, Big Government! But somebodys' got to pay for the rich getting richer, "organized" gangland labor, and keeping the poor, poor. It's the tax "ass whipping" of what remains of the dying, sad but true, only real tax revenue generating source being used, "Middle Class America", that is illegally forced to work for the "left wing progressive growth" of the lying "smoking mirrored" DFL, and their "spread the wealth" Socialism. Call your Congress Persons and let them know, YOU KNOW WHAT THEY ARE UP TO! This is about healthcare reform as much as stimulus is about keeping or restoring American freedom or greatness! The Piper plays Pro DFD, just not your tune, TODAY!

83410 - Tue Mar 16 20:50:18 2010 - [Never Enough Taxes Pilfered by the DFL] By: vote DFL |
Just one month after the start of the 2010 legislative session, Sen. Tom Bakk, DFL-Cook, chair of the Senate Tax Committee, proposed a whopping new tax increase—a sales tax on all clothing.
The proposed extension of the state’s sales tax to clothing would increase tax revenues by $257 million in the first year. Sen. Bakk’s proposed tax increase on clothing comes less than a year after his failed attempt to raise taxes by more than $2 billion, which included an across-the-board income tax increase.
The proposal to extend the sales tax to clothing may be the first major tax increase proposal of this session, but I am sure that it won’t be the last.
The penchant to raise taxes runs strong among DFL lawmakers and, despite GOP Gov. Tim Pawlenty’s opposition to new taxes, there will likely be dozens of tax increase proposals flooding lawmakers’ desks in the coming months.
These tax increase bills follow in the wake of two major tax increases. The first was in February 2008 with the override of Pawlenty’s veto of a $6.6 billion transportation funding package. That bill increased gas taxes, sales taxes, excise taxes and vehicle registration taxes.
The second tax increase was an increase in the state’s sales tax that brings in more than $200 million per year. This was a constitutionally dedicated tax passed by voters in November 2008. The money collected can’t be used to solve the state’s current budget shortfall.
Let’s not forget another huge tax increase, property taxes. Local property taxes have escalated on average by more than 10 percent over the last two years.
Yet with hundreds of millions in new tax revenue each year, the liberals still continue to cry that Minnesotans aren’t sacrificing enough at the altar of government largess. With a current budget shortfall of $1 billion and a looming projected budget shortfall of $5.8 billion facing legislators next year, many legislators will claim the budget can’t be balanced without a tax increase.
The reality is … there already is a massive tax increase coming.
Under current tax law, state income tax collections are projected to rise by more than $2 billion by the end of fiscal year 2013, according to the March budget forecast figures from the Minnesota Management and Budget office. Sales tax revenues are forecast to increase by more than $700 million and total tax collections are slated to increase by more than $3 billion, the figures showed.
How’s that for a tax increase?
Just as revenues have fallen sharply over the last two years, tax collections will likely rebound dramatically in the next three years. These sharp increases are due to Minnesota’s very progressive tax rates. As more people return to work and consumer purchases increase, state tax collections will rapidly rise. As home values rebound, so will property tax values and local government tax revenues.
Minnesotans don’t need more job-killing tax increases. We need private-sector employment growth that will automatically lead to revenue growth. More people paying taxes is the answer to our budget issues, not fewer people paying more in taxes. Currently, the top 1 percent of wage earners pays 25 percent of the total income tax.
In addition to private-sector job growth that could be stimulated by a tax cut, lawmakers must slow the growth rate of state spending. The next biennial budget is forecasted to grow by more than $7 billion, which is a 19 percent increase in spending.
Without any spending reductions, tax revenues would need to increase by $6 billion to balance the budget by the end of fiscal year 2013. State tax revenues have increased by almost $1 billion per year due to the imposition of new taxes in the last two years. Without lawmakers voting to raise a single new tax, general tax revenue is projected to increase by $3 billion.
Do Minnesotans really need an additional tax increase?
Phil Krinkie is a former Republican state representative from Lino Lakes and president of the Taxpayers League of Minnesota. The eight-term lawmaker chaired the House Tax Committee and two other House panels.

Found this on the net:
Peterson
By Andy Birkey 2/19/10 9:02 AM Digg Tweet
oberstarpetersonAs the November elections get closer (only ten months to go!) a slate of Republicans are vying to replace some of the least vulnerable Democrats in the state. Rep. James Oberstar so far has five Republican challengers, and Rep. Collin Peterson has four. Both legislators have been reelected with large margins and are the chairs of powerful committees in Congress, agriculture and transportation respectively.
Karen Nelson, a psychiatrist who served eight years on the New London-Spicer School Board, entered the race against Peterson this week. She is joined by slate of other GOPers, including JC Penney employee Melva Larson of Bagley and former poultry worker Lee Byberg of Willmar, who now runs a small business (and produced his own 12-song CD about America).
Also running is two-time Peterson challenger Glen Menze. Peterson bested the Starbuck resident by 44 percent in 2008 and 40 percent in 2000. He says Rep. Michele Bachmann encouraged him to run.
In Oberstar’s district, five Republicans are vying for the party endorsement.
Michael Cummins from Isanti, who ran against Oberstar in 2008 and lost by 35 points, is challenging him again this year. Small business owner Justin Eichorn of Grand Rapids is also running, as is Hibbing special education teacher Rob Farnsworth and former Navy captain and Northwest airline pilot Chip Cravaack. Another candidate, Chisago City business owner Darrel Trulson, has a background as a Christian author."

Thanks to Cynic for posting the list of market value verses sales amounts for property. Does anyone know if The Northern Communities Land Trust is affiliated with the Northern Communities Credit Union fka Duluth City and County Employees Credit Union?
The non-profit site states that they are "Creating affordable homes and strengthening communities through the wise stewardship of land and resources." And the public can support Northern Communities Land Trust membership by joining - Members who give at the $100 or above that level receive a Land Trust Membership card which can be used at various locally owned businesses and organizations to redeem discounts.
It's interesting to note that participating businesses include the 'Chester Creek Cafe' whose name I've read on this blog before. Any connection? |

Too much koolaid rots the brain. You can't make this shit up!
Duluth News Tribune
Published March 15 2010
Reader's view: Don’t lump unions with Wall Street or bailouts
The editorial cartoon by Nate Beeler of Cagle Cartoons, in the Feb. 26 News Tribune, showed an average man in a flannel shirt saying, “The government is broken.” To the right was a group of men in suits labeled “Unions,” “Wall Street” and “Detroit.” Each man held a bag of money labeled “Stimulus” and “Bailouts.”
The cartoon may have misled readers of the News Tribune to think the state of the economy is due, in part, to unions cashing in from the stimulus package. It is true some union jobs were saved by the stimulus and that some of the jobs created by the stimulus were paid at union-level wages instead of prevailing wages.
The real difference from Wall Street or bank bailouts is that unions are working for the man in the flannel shirt. If unions get to negotiate how some of the stimulus funds are used, then the man in the flannel shirt is benefitting. Further, the greatest percentage of unionized workers are public employees doing work that serves the public rather than making big bucks for large corporations, stockholders or chief executive officer bonuses.
Remember, we would still have child labor and unpaid overtime if it wasn’t for unions.

Don't you all feel bad?
Duluth News Tribune
Published March 15 2010
Reader's view: Overtime story was a cheap shot at city employees
OK, now I’ve seen everything. What was the News Tribune’s point in publishing the March 7 story, “Last year the city of Duluth paid this worker $123,982.56?” Was it to bring attention to an area that may need to be addressed for our city’s budget? Or was the newspaper trying to make some very hard-working people feel bad about doing their jobs?
When you are driving by in your nice, warm car, and it’s 35 degrees below zero outside, and you see the utilities trucks on the side of the road working on a water main break, and it’s 11 p.m., do you say to yourself, “Boy those guys look like they are having a blast?” Or do you think, “I’m so glad that’s not me”? Someone has to do it.
Maybe a better way to address the matter would have been to speak to the supervisors and get their reasons and needs first. I really thought this story was a cheap shot at the employees who actually worked the hours. Why should they have to answer to us? Why put the man’s picture in the paper and list employees’ names? Very tacky! Anyone who gets upset at the employees can remember that whenever those employees are needed they are there; they do all the dirty work. There has to be a better way to fix the money matters without hanging employees out to dry!

For him being Mr Transportation, we should have all new roads around this place, to put the 120k AFSCME worker to work. That is about all I can come up with, with his 90 years of "service" to the people of Northern Minnesota. Northern MN is dying and would the last person, please turn the light off, cause if you don't, they will just tack that charge onto your MN Power bill. |

83388 - Sat Mar 13 18:04:46 2010 - [DFD PAC tops special interest spending!] By: Of Politics and Prosperity |
Friend of DFD, thanks for an absolutely typical, DFL Donny Duluth, politically generic, go no where, avoid the issue, wishy washy, just plain IGNORANT response. We do need change and can no longer afford it to be for the worse! Ya think I shudds where a name tagg wid my aderes ons it, and den bring my dog wid whens I vizet the DFD?
Just try this, Friend of DFD; forget the volunteer fire dept. thing because, THE FACT IS, THE DULUTH DFD WAS AND VERY POSSIBLY STILL IS THE MOST EXPENSIVE PER CAPITA DEPT. IN THE STATE OF MINN. Strange in a City that also holds the highest number of low income per capita in the State! Skilled Duluthians are lucky to find a $12.00 hrly with no benefit job not to even dream there are $32.00 plus an hour jobs. It's spelled BIG DFL DONNY GOVERNMENT! Even Daddy Warbucks sidekick from the Chamber of Communists prints these facts on his blog from July 24, 2008. Little Orphan Andy even goes as far as to say the Duluth Fire Fighters PAC spent more than any other special interest group, and the political fiscal involvement wreaks of tyranny! Why are you not contesting these statements? Even the greedy status quo are worried about how fast DFD and AFSCME unaccountability is turning Duluth into a worthlessNe$$, sewerlessNe$$, stink pot hole. In 2008 Duluths' actual expenditures in salaries was $37,731,826.00, employee benefits equalled $14,930,215.00, and retiree insurance cost $7,853,628.00. Add er' up pal and DFL Donny Duluth spent $60,515,669.00 on employees out of $77,908,116.00 in total expenditures. Furthermore Duluth only took in $75,476,178 which is a $2,431,938.00 shortfall. So Friend of the DFD, does this kind of math work in your business or household? Not mine, but then again my conscience and common sense prevents me from voting for those who shamelessly continue to use politics to get a unjust luxury ride on their neighbors backs and from a failing public treasury. Where is the budget for capitol improvements too infrastructure so Duluth might have a chance at a little, St. Cloud, Rochester, type respect and business atmosphere. Nothing is changed here, proposed 2010 budgets are 68 percent employee costs. Sicker yet is that the 2010 proposed budget of $75,375,000.00 depends on approximately $37,000,000.00 plus from LGA. Minnesota has a billion dollar problem and jokers like Reinert are down there panhandling. Donnys' DFL 09 budget had $62,261,900.00 set aside for employees in a $81,347,000.00 budget. The DFD has typically cost the City around $14,600,000.00. $469,500 for Administration, with $391,000.00 in employee cost!? $11,887,600.00 for Operations, with $8,265,400.00 in employee cost!? That's $8,265,400.00 in salaries, damn I guessed pretty close with my swinging at air $32.00 hrly, but $520,000.00 in overtime, and $2,555,800.00 in benefits, I'm 3 million off! And get this, with the DFD wantin' to go into the ambulance business, Building Inspection at $2,253,600.00 with $1,534,800.00 in salaries, $16,500.00 in overtime, $482,200.00 in employee benefits, and $220,100.00 in "other expenses!? Lots of inspectin' with not too many dollars worth of new buildings? Didn't Hermantown out build Duluth in 09?
So to simplify this and past posts just a little let me say: Duluthians, as you are hopelessNe$$ly up to your ass in fiscal alligators, and your initial objective was to drain the economic swamp, don't be stupid enough to continue feeding the $tatu$ quo alligator$ or trusting the DFL folks who's elected job it was to drain the swamp and instead have used your tax money to protect themselves on "special interest platforms" they've corruptly had you pay for!!
P.S.Google has threatened to leave Communist China because of censorship. The DCB may be Duluth's only honest salvation too Google not recognizing the same kind of local government censorship in Duluth!
Thanks DCB and God Bless All

What has happened to the DFL Tribune as of late. They published they wage story on Sunday, and today's Our View, with T-Paw commenting about how Duluth has got more LGA, and not less, marks a really good point. In the article is states 'Starting with Pawlenty’s attempt to debunk the oft-repeated mantra that Local Government Aid, or LGA, has been slashed. Duluth’s LGA, the governor said, actually has increased, by nearly 5 percent, since 2003, from $26.6 million to
$29.9 million.
“You have the state being a really large portion of Duluth’s budget,” Pawlenty said. “So a question might be, ‘Why is that?’ ”
Pressed for how he’d answer, the governor’s political gloves came clean off. Pawlenty said: “We have St. Paul, Minneapolis, Duluth, some other larger cities — some of which are quite prosperous, by the way — getting over half of their entire city budgets paid for by somebody else. So what kind of decision-making does that lead to? In my life experience, if someone else is paying the bill, people behave differently.'
Frankly, he is right, it has to do with the leadership of this city. Spending 80k on office furniture, all the spending on this Google nonsense. Someone needs to send T-Paw a copy of the Sunday's News Tribune. |

83380 - Fri Mar 12 07:24:17 2010 - [DFD tried taking other union jobs, why?] By: Medic |
It's nice to see the comments about Gold Cross and how they will without question continue to serve Superior residents and Douglas Co, WI.
For some time now, the Duluth Fire department has attempted to put some 27 Gold Cross paramedics out of a job. They have badmouthed us to almost every city official behind our backs in an attempt to sway public opinion when the time came for them to "take a run at our existance".
Our union stood up to them during the recent debates in Duluth and were present at every committee meeting.
It has become clear now that Gold Cross Ambulance can provide the ALS service with great care, speed and cheaper than the Duluth Fire dept. Many citizens have spoken to us about having Gold Cross continue the ALS care in Duluth and have appreciated our service. Likewise, we appreciate serving Duluth and the surrounding area.
I want to make it clear that the Duluth Fire Department made an attempt to take away other union jobs and they did so without hesitation.
I ask the public to look deep into their thought process and ask yourself "why" they would do such a thing. The downturn in our economy and the budget crisis in almost every city has led officials to look at ways to downsize or change operational procedures. These are two subjects the fire department wants nothing to do with.
As a taxpayer living within the city limits of Duluth, I am spreading the word on how we can eliminate outrageous waste in all parts of local government, including the fire department. Stay tuned!
I am a proud union member represented by the Retail Clerks who proudly defended us from a rougue union and it's leadership. |

83379 - Thu Mar 11 22:22:49 2010 - [FD run ambulance not viable option] By: call Gold Cross |
Mar. 9, 2010 (McClatchy-Tribune Regional News delivered by Newstex) -- A Superior Fire Department-run ambulance service is not a viable option for taxpayers.
That was the conclusion drawn by five of seven members of the Ambulance Task Force after a three-month review of the fire department's proposal and service already available.
Most members agreed the potential costs to taxpayers made the proposal undesirable.
"From the start of our task force meetings, I was confident that our city's fire department was capable of providing ambulance service," said Superior Finance Director Jean Vito. "The questions I had, though, was the cost, and was there a legitimate reason to change from the current service provided by Gold Cross."
Vito noted several deficiencies in the fire department's proposal, including underestimates of expenses and overestimates in revenues the service would create. Vito concluded the fire department's proposal would result in deficits averaging $542,750 annually with a cumulative deficit exceeding $2.7 million in five years. With restrictions on levy increases, and the potential to cut other services to make up the shortfall, Vito said she recommended the city continue with Gold Cross.
Local taxpayers do not support ambulance service in the property tax levy, and haven't since Douglas County eliminated its government run service in 1996.
The projected shortfall is slightly less than Douglas County's experience during the last five years it operated a countywide ambulance service, which prompted the board to eliminate the service and contract with Gold Cross.
County taxpayers paid, on average, $556,147 annually to fund the county ambulance service during its last five years of operation.
"In some instances I felt that we spent more time asking Gold Cross to defend themselves rather than hearing from our fire department how they would provide a higher level service at a lower cost," Vito said.
However, Steve Panger, a member of the task force representing the Superior Fire Department, said public records attained from the Wisconsin Office of Emergency Medical Services suggest Fire Chief Jim Rigstad's projections are vindicated. Gold Cross reported 2,869 billable runs in 2008, 59 more runs than projected in the final fire department proposal.
The number of runs the fire department would make annually were among the numbers used by Vito in calculating the potential deficit taxpayers would have to subsidize.
"This task force has really dealt with the financial side of the picture really," Panger said. He said the fire department's faster response times and the continuity of care the firefighter paramedics would provide would have distinct advantages for the patient.
The fire department response time is four minutes or less in 90 percent of its runs.
However, county supervisors on the panel continually questioned those response times if the fire department were to respond to rural communities in an emergency, and were not persuaded the fire department would meet the needs of rural Douglas County as effectively as Gold Cross.
Supervisor Kay Johnson said she met with the Towns Association and town officials concerns included what the city-run ambulance would be able to provide and at what cost. She said rural communities need paramedic services like those provided by Gold Cross, and they don't need additional expenses when budgets are stretched already.
Weighing the interests of rural Douglas County, quality and cost, Supervisor Jack Sweeney came to a similar conclusion.
It's a false assumption that because Gold Cross makes money, the fire department would too, Sweeney said. He said while the fire department's Plan B was to raise fees if expenses weren't covered by the service, the reality is the sources of revenue in 50 to 60 percent of the billable runs make that improbable.
Dr. Robert Sellers said he talked to medical personnel and was unable to find any complaints or concerns about the care delivered by Gold Cross. With a price tag of $500,000 placed on taxpayers, and Gold Cross' backing from the Mayo Clinic and state of the art record system, he said the Superior Fire Department's proposal wasn't a "viable option for our community."
The panel presents its findings to the Superior City Council's committee of the whole March 16. Already, some city councilors are considering sending the issue to a nonbinding referendum in November.
Councilor Greg Mertzig, who sought the task force to determine the viability of the fire department-run ambulance service, questioned the panel about the idea after it reached a majority consensus the service would be taxpayer funded.
Warren Bender, councilor and chairman of the task force who was in the minority Monday night, said he thinks the issue should go to the voters. He concluded the revenue generated by the service would exceed fire department projections, making the proposal "feasible."
That conclusion was drawn based on an "egregious" misinterpretation of numbers, Vito said of numbers attributed to her.
"Anything's feasible if you want to pay for it," Sellers said. |

Emergency care requires network
Shelley Nelson, Superior Telegram
Published: December 22, 2009 7:11:11 PM CST
When Gold Cross shows up on the scene of a medical emergency, it’s just a small piece of the network that provides emergency transport services in the region.
Matt Will of Gold Cross said there are multiple facets to operating an ambulance service – education, medical controls, quality assurance, communication and information technology, vehicle maintenance, specialized supplies – all contribute to the care patients receive.
Education key
“Medical care is changing on a regular basis; we’re constantly updating our guidelines, updating our supplies,” Will said. “… Our education department has to stay in tune with national and state standards, and make sure we’re always in compliance.”
That education begins where classroom training ends, before a paramedic ever treats a patient.
“You don’t just come out of paramedic school and start with Gold Cross and start taking care of patients,” Will said. “We have a comprehensive orientation program. Once people complete that, there’s a field training program that our team members are placed into. Now, even when they are working for us out there, there’s a scripted program by which they learn about the organization and guidelines.”
Even seasoned paramedics are required to continue their education to keep up with changes in medical care.
“We have a pretty robust education program for our team members when they come into the organization and on an ongoing basis to help them maintain their certifications,” Will said.
Behind the scenes
Mayor Dave Ross said there are a number of shortfalls in the proposal that are cause for concern and could affect the excess revenue the fire department anticipates.
In addition to administration, he said he has a hard time believing some of the numbers, such as a $15,000 expense for medical control.
Gold Cross utilizes a full-time physician to provide medical direction that guides paramedics work in the field as well as developing and reviewing medical guidelines. The medical director is also involved in training programs, quality assurance reviews and practice changes.
Ambulances are highly specialized vehicles and maintaining the vehicles isn’t something that could be handled by a typical dealership or mechanic. Will said. Gold Cross contracts with an outside vendor for the service. That maintenance, in the fire department’s proposal, is anticipated to cost about $6,330 annually.
While the proposal accounts for $721,700 in equipment costs, including ambulances and turnout gear for nine additional firefighters anticipated to be hired, it falls short where electronic recordkeeping is concerned. The proposal includes nothing for computer technology that is a backbone for Gold Cross’ operation.
Will said information technology allows Gold Cross to manage everything from providing patient information to medical facilities and for billing, and allows the company to meet its reporting requirements.
Minnesota and Wisconsin require data on every run Gold Cross makes. The Wisconsin Department of Health Services requires data about the ambulance service, the patient and the care they received.
Resources
With five ambulances manned 24 hours a day, seven days a week – three in Duluth, one in Superior and one in Hawthorne – Gold Cross’ service may appear to come up short against a proposal that would keep two ambulances manned around the clock in Superior.
A proposal by the Superior Fire Department would utilized two ambulances located at the headquarters on Tower Avenue and another in East End routinely. A third ambulance would be maintained in reserve in the event it’s needed.
While Gold Cross routinely mans only one ambulance in Superior, Will said more are available when needed.
“The vehicles move around based on the calls that come in,” Will said. “When there’s a lot going on in Superior, there’s an ambulance that shifts over here, and vice versa.”
Ambulances staged at the foot of the bridges between Duluth and Superior are common when a call goes out.
In the event of a catastrophic event, Will said Gold Cross can immediately draw from its staff of 60 in the region to operate seven additional ambulances in reserve throughout the region. The company also has mutual aid agreements with surrounding communities to draw on additional resources when needed.
Companywide, Gold Cross has 56 ambulances and more than 300 team members.
“If there’s an incident … long-term we could bring in team members from our operations in Rochester, Mankato, Fairmont, "Minn. , Will said. “The beauty of our system too is we are one system. Our equipment has the same supplies and equipment in them. Our team members are trained to the same standard." |

83376 - Thu Mar 11 18:51:01 2010 - [DFD only ones getting hurt ] By: Friend of DFD |
of polictics and prosperity,
The info that I give comes from knowing several firefighters that work for duluth, having seen their contract, and just calling the city or townships with questions. The firefighters want the facts out there, they are tired of the hearsay, stats that are way out of hand, and people who accuse them of things without knowing what has happened. Do I think things could change, sure, things can always change some for the good some for the worse. DFD wants to do the most they can for the city.
As for the volunteer dept. yes it does matter. You are comparing them to a volunteer department that may have 10 time less population, cover half the square mileage, have a small fraction the buildings, far fewer stations, 1/5 the personnel that may or may not be able to show up to the call, and maybe do less than 2 percent of the call volume. Of course they will cost less.
Am I saying every department should be full time, of course not that is impossible, and irresponsible. Volunteers are 100% needed in many communities due to the reasons I listed above. Do I also think Duluth should work more with the surrounding townships to help them and us cut costs, absolutely. By cutting public safety whether it be police or fire and by not working with other townships the only people getting hurt are us.
I encourage you to stop by a DFD station sometime and have them explain what they do and what they can do, it may help you understand. |

“Chairman Oberstar wants workers who are doing essentially the same jobs to be treated the same way under labor law,” committee spokesman Jim Berard said.
Berard said Oberstar was “very supportive” and that he would fight to keep the labor provision in the larger FAA bill.

83373 - Thu Mar 11 13:40:00 2010 - [Become a Friend of Duluth, Friend of DFD] By: Of Politics and Prosperity |
I would like to set the record straight. As far as the DFD goes, I have shamefully blogged based on budget hearsay and conjecture. Friend of the DFD states budget and overtime figures, but where did they come from? In DFL union controlled Duluth, who really knows what the DFD cost is to the taxpayers. Ne$$ didn't know how much campaign money he got until caught and he quitely gave some back!? Swinging at air, lets try, with 132 uniformed fire fighters and "support staff", as taken from City of Duluth web page, a Friend of the DFD, acceptable, 40 hour week at $32.00 hrly, including benefits, is a $8,110,080.00 payroll alone. As Friend of the DFD states, maybe they are a "asset" to Duluth. An "asset" in the terms of the common sense twisted DFL unaccountability that propels Duluth towards middle class total economic inability. How else would you provide EMT response several times daily to the "pee in the streets" passed out street inhabitants of Downtown Duluth? Build a Wethouse to allow them to drink themselves to death? Can you say tax paid uthenasia? The DFD has also taken over building saftey? Makes sense in Duluth with the Wethouse housing 70 "chronic judged too society" problem citizens, and all in a 140' by 150' 5 story area!? Pack em' in like sardines as long as their welfare checks and subsequent DFL lobbied tax credits go to San Marcos LLC. This while new skywalks can be TAXPAYER built where the City used to "hide" these folks. Conflicting major industries? The status quo want tourism "clean and green" which they accomplish basically on the taxpayers tab, the unions want more City and social service programs plus benefits on the taxpayers tab to verify their, already unjustifiable in the private sector, highly unproductive, corruptly regulated, costs, and this is all made possible by raping the only real source of support, the private sector middle class taxpayer. So Duluth UnderNe$$ contradicts itself, while the "clean and green" pick up cigarette butts, the number of unproductive, "problem", new, free ride, citizens multiplies in the socialist utopia of the north. This while those asked to really sacrifice for this greed figure out the only smart way is the highway!!!!!!
What Volunteer fire dept. did I speak of? Does it matter? These folks give of their time and risk life and limb for a UNCONTESTABLE per capita lesser cost!!!!!!! Their budgets for comparable area protection and dollar value of real estate is also UNCONTESTABLE. Is their training less? Do they have less equipment? Most likely but them, didn't a totally unqualified community minded bystander save someone in Duluth not that long ago? Let's talk about what Duluth can afford to be without truthfully! Apples for Oranges, what can Duluth afford? Not to pick on the DFD, but how do the costs and "reasonably affordable necessary services" get so SHAMEFULLY twisted out of proportion without corruption and greed? So let's stop picking on the DFD, and go where the blame really lies in Duluth, THE CORRUPT GDC CENTERED, CHAMBER CONTROLING, STATUS QUO GREED THAT WANTS IT ALL AND SACRIFICES A GREATER DULUTH FOR EVERYONE KNOWING DFL AND DONNY DULUTH LAZY INDEBTED DUMBNE$$ ENABLES THEM TO EVENTUALLY BUY IT ALL DIME ON THE DOLLAR OR STEAL IT!!!!!!!! IF THIS WAS NOT SO DFL DONNYNE$$ WOULD NO EXIST IN DULUTH TODAY! Maybe someone should list all the "NEW" businesses and their job values in the GDC Downtown Waterfront Business District and the ones that are gone since this GDC scam started. Strange how quietly The City Council just renewed the BID. One would think a $1,000,000.00 commitment over the next five years would have made as of big headlines as the Pawlenty cuts to aid for The City. Donny tried to cut a $100,000.00 of City $200,000.00 annual contribution, but Kristi Stokes easily convinced him of the ultimate importance of a program, he voted for, that is unquestionably uncontstituional, in it's taxation, control, and services! How much could the City cut if EVERYONE in this District were asked to pay the same percentage of market value as all others are required? Never thought of publicly asking that question Donny? Since the BID started how much have those with the $7000.00 unconstitutionally corrupt contribution ceilings saved? Would they have left Duluth or cut their already City padded operations? How many well paid, healthy community building jobs wouldn't exist today? How about these folks with their great "communtity spirit" and economic benefit, step up to the plate they alone now can afford and help the City? Donny Duluth and the status quo can't build skywalks that would truly benefit the "community" so why would they want to "give back" unless what they recieve is far greater?
Become a Friend of Duluth, Friend of DFD, and shoot us some figures dispelling this theory with your "change, looking forward to the future, and thinking out of the box" stuff.
Now, to keep my dog alive, I'll have to move to Sioux Falls.
Thanks DCB and God Bless All

Good morning all,
Cynic,
You are correct. Those programs were put in place to help reduce overtime. There used to be a pool of firefighters on each shift that helped keep overtime at a minimum. Due to budget cuts those pools have gotten very small, hence when a position is open overtime is be needed. The administration and the fire union did sit down and figured out a way to stop the outrageous overtime to the benefit of the city and the employees.
However, from what I am told by the guys i know the vacation sellback ended at the end of 2009. But the savings plan is still in effect. I think it is a good solution. Anytime you can cut overtime is a good thing.
The retirements have slowed and from what I am told there is one more big bunch and then it will be almost none for a long time due to how young the department will be.
Civil Service needs to get looked at as it can sometimes be a very lengthy process and can severely hamper any hiring.
Tara,
Thanks for the support. I try to give the facts that I have from the guys I know that work there. |

City bought furniture without council’s OK
Councilors express concern that a required step was bypassed.
By: Brandon Stahl, Duluth News Tribune
This furniture at the Duluth Police Department downtown substation was part of a recent purchase by the city of Duluth. The City Council tabled a decision Monday on whether to approve the purchase, not knowing that much of the furniture was already purchased.
Considering the overall size of the city of Duluth’s budget, should the City Council spend time debating an $80,000 expenditure on office furniture?

I need help, I am looking for a site called Duluth Citizens Blog, all I find is this one which should be titled.........DULUTH CITIZENS AGAINST DULUTH FIREFIGHTERS BLOG...seriously, things must be good in duluth besides the fire dept.
MODERATOR: rusty, my public sector employee friend, we have a lot of good things happening right now in DFL Duluth. We have a $300,000.00 unfunded health care liability that the Mayor would like us all to forget about, for starters. He has done nothing to address the problem, but the bill has not gone away. Add to this another $437,000,000.00 for new schools, while the enrollment is continuing to decline, as tax paying citizens vote with their feet and head out. Their replacements moving to the city, not only don't contribute in any meaningful way to paying taxes, they actually move here so that those citizens who haven't left yet can pay for these newcomers too. Then we have 100 year old infrastructure within the city that can't be paid for because the public employee unions are gobbling up all the money that they can with help from their bought and paid for politicians. With a one party political system and decades of decline, you should expect more of your "good news" DFL Duluth toughy feely BS in the future. Remember that all those public employee contracts are only as good as the ability of the taxpayers to make good on paying them. Want to see where Duluth is heading? Watch California and learn a little something. Oh, how beautiful DFL Duluth really is, huh? We will all see who gets the last laugh!!! Spend your money wisely, you are going to need it, or maybe not. |

83364 - Wed Mar 10 10:17:08 2010 - [Any truth to it or more DFD Kool Aid?] By: Cynic |
Here is something from BUZZ Duluth that was written about DFD overtime. I don't know if the person knows what they are talking about or not but it could be one explanation.
Quote: "You question why the fire department's overtime was so low in comparison to years past- here is an explanation.
#1. The hiring process with civil service is very lengthy. A few years ago, there were many retirements, and it took a great deal of time to get new hires to replace them. Because of both public safety and fire fighter safety mandates, minimum staffing requirements caused for a great deal of overtime.
#2. The administration and the fire union negotiated for a couple of different programs. The first is a healthcare savings account. This allows banked vacation to be rolled into an individual health care savings account at the end of each calendar year. This has reduced the number of vacation days taken, and therefore reduces overtime.
The second program was a vacation sell back program. If a person was on vacation on a given day, and the labor pool was exhausted, requiring an overtime shift, the person on vacation could give back the vacation day, to be either put into the bank to be rolled into health care savings, or to be paid at straight time. Either way, the city has a significant savings over paying overtime.
I believe that the fire administration and the union deserve a lot of credit for a huge reduction in overtime expenses from the past few years. There are still ways we can make improvements, like streamlining the civil service process. The current process can take several months to generate a hiring list and then hire a fire fighter. Because of this lengthy process, overtime costs can soar when the fire department is short-staffed."...

I have to laugh at all the DFL Assclowns who are currently controlling the City of Duluth. It is such an act. They pour Kool-Aid so much that even they have been blinded by its side effects. DFL Duluth is nothing but a well planned show meant to steal more and more money from the unknowing hard working people of Duluth.
Does anybody really think that Stalhalinski's timing on his recent article on City of Duluth AFSCME corruption was an accident? Consider that the timing followed a supposed hard fought contract settlement between Donny Boy Ness and AFSCME. Once again, Ness will be screwing the taxpayers over and he will call this making hard choices. How can a mayor sign a deal with a criminal gang and then turn around and call this a fair settlement? Fair for whom? Ness reminds me of the story of Jim Jones of the Peoples Temple when Kool Aid Jim raped a young girl in the back of the bus he used to travel through the U.S. and all the time he was raping her he told her that he was doing it for her, not for him. That he was getting nothing out of it. This is a perfect analogy of what Ness is doing to Duluthians who pay the bills. Now he agreed to a new contract allowing his AFSCME buddies to continue to steal as much as they possibly can for at least another year. I would be willing to bet that this Fall we will hear the Boy Mayor telling us that because of cuts in LGA that taxes must be raised or police and fire will have to be cut. He will fail to mention that he agreed in March, 2010 to give the farm away to his AFSCME friends.
Do yourself a favor. Buy nothing in DFL Duluth. Shop online, in Cloquet, in Superior as AFSCME leaders do, and don't feed this animal anymore money. They will continue to steal what they can through property taxes, but you can help by not spending any money here. Hopefully, because of the decades of the DFL ruining the City of Duluth, the new census will reflect that the population decline means a redistricting of Congressional borders. This could bring in a larger group of non DFL Kool Aid drinkers and a good chance to start putting an end to this DFL corruption that has ruined Duluth.
Should Duluth have the lowest wages, highest poverty, worst health, worst infrastructure, worst roads, most expensive fire department, highest utility rates, and most padded and stolen overtime hours in the entire state?
What an embarrassment this city has become under DFL control. |

No confusion Friend of DFD, I would say you were DFL Donny himself with your "looking forward to change, thinking outside the box, and moving forward towards the future". Yep, in Duluth the only thing that has changed in the last 35 years is that the degree of corruption in City Government is now outrightly criminal, and 20,000 people left. The AFSCME Self Assisting Duluth Government Group continues to far exceed it's value by cost ratio. In the private sector the way Duluth is run would not work. They "skillfully" think outside of the legal box and seek no solution to their inability to successfully move Duluth into the future. Like our Federal lobby laiden government, it has stopped moving forward and now, just like Duluth has permanently become, hopelessNe$$ly dug deeper in economically irreversible and irresponsible debt! Duluth needs to break the unions, offer $24.00 hrly. including benefits, to start with, 1/2 hrly pay over time for firefighters until they can find qualified people who will sleep for 1/2 pay. Not what they pay now. I may have been incorrect about monthly overtime, but even with your figures, it equals $75,000.00 quarterly and that still exceeds what I know for fact is the total annual budget of a nearby volunteer fire dept., that answered a family emergency in 7 minutes, middle of the day, 5.5 miles from the hall! This volunteer fire dept. has also set aside $20,000.00 towards a new truck within this budget! Solid core services grow from Community Pride and that grows from RESPECTFUL treatment of Governmnet resources. It's hard to be proud of Duluth for just that reason, as for the common, private sector, working stiff, taxpayer it is all about cutting all his living costs not just some union contract language!
Corrupt greedy people and politicians have given away too much to too few in Duluth and now DFL Duluth handpicks, with the silent direction of the status quo, it's future because not even a qualified leader, can get past those who have no Community Concern and continue to vote themselves LARGENE$$ from the public treasury! Superior's Mayor Ross IS moving Superior into the future, take a look!!!!!!! |

Common sense in your eyes will never come to this city, unless you mean the kind of common sense that only agrees with you and never challenges. You are looking for your way or the highway. Someone has to be in charge, the majority has elected who they felt was best. It was not your canditate. DFD didn't buy all the entire city as you seem to suggest. They did what they thought was best and so would you. I try to provide the best info that I can on what I can about the DFD. Call Gold Cross,
And did you notice that the mayor of superior, who is totally against a switch, hand picked the task force. I think that the deck was stacked against superior before they even got started. They needed a panel of neutral persons, maybe from other communities, that could have objectively looked at the situation. This subject is too politically hot for anyone from around here to look at it for what it is and not what someone might think, or the mistakes of the past.
MODERATOR: Friend of DFD, you can't imagine how comical it is to read how a DFDer like you can call another city's mayor out for hand picking anyone or anything. You are way too funny! Duluth corrupt politics wrote the book on hand picking politicians. And we all know that nobody knows hand picked better than DFD as they hand picked not only Mayor Ne$$, but also Hartman, Gardner, Anderson, Cuneo, Gauthier and Boyle. Keep up the hand picking if you want to keep yourselves as the most expensive FD in the USA. If common sense ever comes back to Duluth, your hand picking days are all over. |

83350 - Tue Mar 9 15:52:30 2010 - [Droves of people move to Duluth for DFD] By: Friend of DFD |
Of Politics and Prosperity,
I think you have me confused with someone else. I look foward to change, thinking outside the box and moving toward the future. What bothers me is when someone picks out 1 thing that they think is the problem and then looses all focus on anything else. We can cut all that we want but if we don't have any business or people living in the city eventually we won't have anything to cut. What are the things that bring people and businesses to a city, solid core services, not parking ramps for non-profits, and programs to fund everything you can think of. We need to look at how we spend, but the answer isn't always to cut it may be to change or redirect how we spend it.
Looking at qualifications for jobs is another thing. This blog complains about the qualifications of our mayor, then in the same breath they complain about the DFD wanting to keep the high requirements that it takes to get hired there. Yes maybe only 2 departments out of 800 require this test, maybe these 2 departments are looking for the best candidants that they can find for these jobs. You say that the DFD makes the big bucks, so why not get what we pay for, the most qualified candidate that can give the city the most bang for the buck. Just because not everyone is doing it doesn't make it a bad thing. Remember when no one had cell phones, now everyone has them and they strive for newer and better all the time. Maybe this is the equivilant of the cell phone for the fire service. Someday everyone will require it and we were one of the leaders not the followers.
Also, you have no idea what volunteer fire departments cost. Their costs well exceed what you have said of the 25000 i spoke of earlier. Departments in the metro cost millions to run and provide less service than the DFD. Even local vol. departments cost more than that. |

83347 - Tue Mar 9 11:30:18 2010 - [The DFL Duluth problem is UNION GREED] By: Of Politics and Prosperity |
Friend of DFD blogs about City cuts. Cut this and cut that.
It isn't "negative bloggers" like Dodge Street that have made Duluth smaller and less attractive. It's the spend way too much, teach way too little, no vote allowed, school district, that hurts Duluth. It's millions in DEDA and TIF gifts to the status quo that create too few and only poverty to low income jobs, that hurts Duluth. It's the way too high a cost and size of the DFD, that has a monthly automatic overtime price that is greater than the annual budget of most volunteer depts., that hurts Duluth. It's not the cuts in the City Utilities Dept. but rather greedy political, union, and unaccountable public treasury bought, manuvering that controls hiring and takes advantage of what in the private sector is considered insane overtime contract language, that hurts Duluth.
Duluth is a City where, status quo corruption, and a unconstitutionally, back pocket owned, public treasury buys a majority of same mindset, pulselessNe$$ puppet politians, time after time. This mindset can afford to plumb for their fish but not for the people, with Watergardens, Wethouses and Aquariums but not sump pumps or sewer systems! Having the status quo and unions being the sole beneficiaries from the only allowed industries of tax dollar subsidized tourism, big government, and social welfare, is why creative and independence seeking people leave or will not move to Duluth. Because of either lies too cover up or just plain greed, folks like Friend of the DFD, despite the progressive rosy picture they are fiscally still able to paint, it is the reason Duluth will and just keeps getting economically smaller and physically less attractive. Soon just the status quo will benefit and their economic iron fist rule by silence will own it all in Duluth!!!!!!!!!! If Friend of the DFD thinks the status quo will still make room for DFL progressivism, with their unaccountable waste and welfare, we need just look at who has walked away the tallest on a Federal level, really just the status quo have kept what they rightfully deserved to lose while middle class working America lost to them what was rightfully theirs still deserved to keep!!!!!!! The wealthly move to intentionally create unsustainable economy crushing debt and a huge competative, non-union, low income, workforce for themselves, just like how it works with Socialism!!!!!!!!!!!!
The solution has become obvious in Massachuetts, now the question is can those in DFL Donny Duluth, like Friend of the DFD, see the facts and start working to be part of a long term better for all solution rather than part of the short term better for some situation?

83345 - Tue Mar 9 10:25:58 2010 - [Who needs OT when we get paid to sleep?] By: Friend of DFD |
Good mornig all.
Slippery Slpoe,
I don't have the exact these are rough numbers but I did some digging and found out that each firefighter that can get it averages about 5 times a year. At 4 hours of 1/2 time @ 20 per hour is 40 dollars total per time or 200 dollars per year. About 120 firefighters are elegible so that is about 24,000 in 1/2 time per year for the whole department. So 200 dollars per year is not going to put them on the major OT list. Now this is an average so it could be a little more some years and a little less others. Also, the way I understand it it is not something that the union or the city can just write out of the contract it is federally mandated for the 56 hr work week.
Anything else???? |
