A huge number of UMD staff, at the last strike, thought the contract was fair and did NOT agree with a strike. The militant hard liners in the Twin Cities pushed for it, not the Duluth people!

Hey Ha - love that name!! In RI, I find it very disturbing that one of the stipulations in the new contract with the Teacher's Union required the teachers to eat lunch in the cafeteria with their students, once a week. The UNION said NO! Give me a break!! Are the teachers too good to sit with their students or just too damn lazy? I have been to Central Falls many times, having been raised 20 miles from there. Hell hole at best. 50% drop out rate, with teachers advising students to get their GED instead of staying in school. RI is failing in many ways, and this is just part of the problem.

From someone who's sick of the greedy, "we need more money, we need more time off" Duluth teachers ---

A Rhode Island school district has voted to FIRE all the teachers at an underperforming school. The Central Falls School Committee voted Tuesday evening to fire every educator at Central Falls High School at the end of the school year.

It's the only school in the tiny, impoverished city north of Providence. Only about half its students graduate, and only 7 percent of 11th-graders were proficient in math in 2009. The plan was developed because of a federal effort to makeover failing schools.

The Central Falls Teachers Union says it is reviewing legal options and hasn't decided what action to take. Education Secretary Arne Duncan applauds the decision and says "when schools continue to struggle we have a collective obligation to take action."

Bloated Borrowing Bill Gets OK'ed by Liberals

Liberals succeeded in pushing an unsustainable and unaffordable $1 billion bonding bill through the legislature late Tuesday night. The DFL finished drafting the bonding bill behind closed doors with little public input in conference committee around 1 a.m. Monday and voted to approve the bill less than 24 hours later.
Within the billion dollar borrowing bill, the DFL failed to dedicate money for renovation of the Minneapolis Veterans Home or Moose Lake Correctional Facility, but did include numerous pork projects including:
* $1 million for the Theodore Wirth Park Winter Recreation Area

* $2 million for the Minneapolis Sculpture Garden

* $11 million for the Como Zoo

* $16 million for Minneapolis Orchestra Hall

* $16 million for Ordway Performing Arts Center
Even before the vote was taken, Governor Pawlenty warned he would veto the bill.

Yes, DFD is a mostly well-behaved and professional organization with the exception of the most vocal members. That is what ruins it for your reputation. Comments like "why dont you crawl back into your holes" isnt going to win anybody over...but you obviously dont get the point, or you would concede to the fact that DFD will NEVER provide a service that is less expensive to the taxpayers. You see, taxpayers pay exactly NOTHING, ZERO, ZIP, ZILCH, NADA, for the ambulance service now...it just doesnt get much less expensive than that. So, I dont know where you took your math classes. But the nonsense that you are trying to preach that DFD will offer a lower cost service is crazy. Stop trying to convince the taxpayers that the world is flat, the moon is made out of cheese, and that Duluth has any hope...

Ness, Obestar, and Obama continue in their DFL, enabled prison of poverty, progressive lie of "protection of the little guy" politics. It is too bad it's more about making a poverty "held down people" nation than a rightious reality, right to work, chance at prosperity, nation.

Three short examples;

Ness, builds skywalks, pay cut protects his already, private sector uncapable, overpaid, non-productive, AFSCME City employees, while millions of tax dollars are forgiven for no permanent REAL good job, or tax producing Renaissance Projects! Would Ness have been able to stay with the Zeppa Fund without the politics he puppet controlled? Strange another City Councilor has those connections???????? Better yet what happened to the really funny, conscience connected, "Colder by the Lake" gang?"

Obestar, protects industry choking greedy union leaders, builds bike trails for millionaires while Minnesotans die and taxpayers pay millions in law suits from unbelievable bridge collaspes, and like Franken, really isn't a Minnesotan any more. Legislative Losers if the record holds water!!!!!

Obama, read my lips, no new taxes "??????
, just Stimulus and unaccountable spending that makes Bush look good!!! $43,500 from the U.S. taxpayer for each "cash for clunker" deal! What happened to the folks who didn't have union jobs that qualified them for the high interest cash for clunker loans? They are still driving 20 year old, 150,000 mile junkers that got 25 mpg plus per gallon already and didn't need Cap and Trade corrupt, back scratching, legislation to have been produced! Who is really paying for all this spending, Wells Fargo????!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Wake up Duluth!! When will Duluth start to understand it must vote with it's heart and conscience instead of it's Public Treasury enabled wallets!!!

'No' vote could bring Duluth's largest union to a strike
The American Federation of State, County and Municipal Employees local union will vote today on the city's contract offer. If members reject it, their next step might be to authorize a strike.
By: Brandon Stahl, Duluth News Tribune

The city of Duluth’s largest union is being urged by its negotiating team to reject a contract offer by the city and authorize a strike, a union spokeswoman said Monday afternoon.

The city and members of the American Federation of State, County and Municipal Employees Local 66 have met at the negotiating table only twice since talks began in September, said AFSCME spokeswoman Jennifer Munt.

The city submitted a contract offer in December that was rejected, Munt said. A final offer was made on Feb. 16, and the union negotiating team is recommending its members reject it when they vote today.

Munt referred questions regarding why negotiators recommend rejecting the contract to Jim Dreier, the union’s negotiation chair.

Dreier said the conflict with the city isn’t about wages, but “about fair and equal treatment of our members and their contract.” He declined to elaborate until the results of the vote are announced.

If the union authorizes a strike, Munt said members will “regroup” to decide when a strike date should be set. The union is required to give the city

10 days notice before striking.

Munt said during a strike it’s up to city managers to keep operations going such as snowplowing and sewer line repairs.

AFSCME Local 66 represents 492 city employees.

City Chief Administrative Officer David Montgomery said he hopes the union agrees to the contract, but if it’s rejected, “I presume they’ll want to come back to the bargaining table,” he said.

If a strike does happen, however, he said the city “will do everything it can to continue operations necessary for citizens,” but said the city has not yet determined its strike contingency plans.

He said the offer made to the AFSCME employees is a one-year contract with zero percent salary increases, similar to contracts that the police, confidential and supervisory unions have already agreed to.

He said the city’s offer reflects language that is in the current contract that AFSCME employees agreed upon nearly three years ago.

“The contract proposal we gave is essentially the same one that’s in existence today,” he said.

Montgomery indicated that the union was not asked to take concessions beyond the zero percent salary increase.

“If we had put concessions in the final offer that would not reflect language in the contract today,” he said.

Some city councilors expressed optimism Monday that a deal would be reached and a strike avoided.

“I know there were concerns about contract language, seniority rights and the right to strike,” said 3rd District Councilor Sharla Gardner. “It wasn’t financial. It’s workers’ rights they’re concerned about, so I don’t see anything that can’t be ironed out.”

Another councilor blasted AFSCME and the firefighters union — which also hasn’t settled with the city — for not yet agreeing to a deal.

“It’s time union leaders from the firefighters and AFSCME take a dose of reality,” said Councilor Todd Fedora. “Those two bargaining units need to at least accept the terms that the police department, confidential and supervisory units have already accepted. Councilor Jim Stauber said he was floored when he heard the union was considering a strike.

“This is not the time to be recommending anybody go on strike,” he said.

Rumor has it the Pickwick is being eyed for purchase by the local branch of the GLA. The name will be changed to The Pickwhich. Earnest money is to be approved from a CLU grant, and DEDA funds in a planned 6-3 vote from the City Council. TIF financing was arranged with local politicians early in the planning. The basement will be turned into a 1051 single occupancy unit expansion of the Wethouse with CCH and LISC securing zoning and financing for this portion of the operation. A City Hall claim will be that hundreds of thousands of City dollars will be saved having a "Inhouse Wethouse" liquor outlet. "Upstairs instead upchuck" will be the motto. CHUM and County Commissioner O'Neil will proclaim this a "jewel" of a project. A proposed $25,000 will be saved daily in not necessary DFD first responder calls between 1st and 3rd streets west downtown. Future plans do include a 5022 homeless, single occupancy unit facility, which will be built in the air space now over the Fitger Parking Ramp. Mayor Don Ness will base his reelection campaign and will be publically picketing against the use of eminent domain by the City for the airspace, that at this point, is in price contention. The owner will eventually settle for $750,000,000.00 which Ness will pay from a Casino No Pay Street Maintenance Fund. Bob Dylan Way will be renamed to Gay Way. The restaurant workers union will be shut out by the new management who say they will hire 70 people on a part time, no benefit, basis in order to keep the operation costs down and also qualify them for a 500 billion dollar Obama Stimulus one time payment towards their annual bonuses and retirement funds. Union restaurant employees will find Reinert introducing a bill in the State Legislature to extend and triple unemployment benefits up to 250 years for them. It will fail but Ness will hire them on as City full time parking meter attendants at $85,000.00 each a year with not yet recieved Stimulus money. Ness will ask to raise parking fees to $100.00 per hour and raise fines to $50,000.00 per incident. The Chamber and GDC will give praise and support to Ness saying he has once again held the status quo at bay and moved Duluth that much closer to being a success for all it's citizens!

Boycott Texas Roadhouse restaurant in Duluth

Over 25 union members from the Duluth Building Trades have been hand billing Texas Roadhouse's single entry since it's Grand Opening last week and will continue to do so. Texas Roadhouse was built with non-union, out-of-town contractors that paid sub-standard wages and benefits. Worker safety during the project was a significant issue with the project, as demonstrated by the unfortunate death of one of the workers on site.

“To me, even on cable, there is no real objective outlet,” he said. “That is the beauty of public TV and public radio. They have be totally objective, totally middle of the road because they are getting public money. Commercial stations don’t have that motivation.”

"Doty said that cuts to public TV and radio aren’t surprising, and that he wouldn’t be surprised to see an eventual end to any public funding."

A Duluth teenager? Don't think so. This shooter I believe was from Chicago here for a stint with his grandma. Good for 2 courts affirming the decision to try this cold blooded animal as an adult. This is what you get when you have generous welfare, medical and housing programs better than where they came from. I wonder if this state and city will ever wake up.

83127 - Fri Feb 19 21:50:44 2010 - [What's an Assclown?] By: Dennis Miller
Ben Dover,

I cracked the tap on my first cold one and am pondering about Assclowns. What's an Assclown? Who is on the DFL Duluth Assclown Team? Does the DFL Assclown Team have a coach? A manager? Owner? Cheerleaders? Is there an Assclown All-Star Team? How does one get on the Assclown Team? Are there tryouts? Are the Assclowns recruited or walk on? Is there a developmental program for future Assclowns?

Back to the cold one I go but really want to know about the Assclowns.

Congrats on your escape from the tyranny of DFL Duluth.

Are the taxes, fees, poverty and crime less where you located?

Is the jobs environment a lot better there?

Are wages higher?

Thanks in advance.

83125 - Fri Feb 19 16:04:57 2010 - [DFL Donny Duluth Dream's a Nightmare] By: Of Ploitic and Prosperity
Thanks to Wolf for a great reply!

I should treat Crabbes' post with the same ignorance shown by Duluth for my concerns before I took to the highway. A intelligent cop out by the way. No sense in talking to a wall, yet Crabbe displays such idiocism I can't restrain acknowledging the post and how "IT IS DULUTH TODAY"

A quick review of the number of government subsidized housing programs, percent of dependency on welfare programs by government employees and those enabled by them, cost of governmnet serves per capita, quality of government serves per capita, comparative unemployment figures to St. Cloud and Rochester, directly useable tax revenue generating business growth, municipality tax bases of comparible per capita cities unlike Duluth where almost all top end properties are tax seltered by TIF'S and DEDA, and the numbers of low income in Duluth says it clearly. Thus to a Contraire Claire Crabbe Conclusion; obviously George Crabbe saved Wolf the impact of the MY WAY or THE HIGHWAY PROGRESSIVE DFL DULUTH DOOR in the ass by having their insane greed allow their head to be hit by the door instead and not even recognize what's happened to them. Isn't 1982 around the time Saturn declined Duluth's garbage, union ladden, offer and decided to build elswhere, our was that when the Steel Company and Diamond Tool closed their doors and the decades old Donny Duluth corrupt politics sent more jobs packing? Better yet, how many long term community building jobs does a three times over budget, non-contracted for end use, eminent domain law suit filled, city owned, parking ramp make? You are and were pretty quite Donny?????!!!!!!

Come on Contraire Crabbe, racism every time you can't come up with an intelligent answer? Can't you recognize you are the bully football captain in the scenario? I called Duluth a her, my right in your world? In your world millions of any gender could easily be a muscular 285 lb. captain of a boys high school football team. Crabbe lives in a world where there are no winners and no losers, everybody gets a trophy for even a DFL DONNY DULUTH unacceptable and unaccountable effort. Crabbe is happy with an corrupt community, hiearchy afforded, unworkable, non-deserving, Progressive Possessive Prosperity done by filling too many hard working peoples lives full of frustration and hardships. Filling Duluth with bought votes from those who would rather take than give leaves you the real Duluth today! Because I have a God I fear, and rules He set forth, I ask you to forgive me if I hurt your feelings. Obviously you and any god you may worship other than yourself could care less about what your politics are unquestionably doing to Duluth! Crabbe, but after realizing that I, like Wolf, didn't want to share my efforts, talents, skill, drive, and most of my justly earned rewards with people who had no conscience of community, I have to say, really I don't give a damn about your kind of one sided civil liberaties or upside down economics. Simply but factually put, your hierarchy spends way more than it makes, your politics enable only the wealthy elite and mass poverty, so let it be if Duluth has to wait for the bottom to recgnize and vote out your braindead unaccountable progressive greed. History repeats itself. In this age of technology it is especially sad Crabbe can not see what is TRUTHFULLY happening! The system is broken. Crabbe you and Doomsday Duluth Donnys' Progressive politics and answers only have destroyed more of the broken pieces beyond repair. We ALL fall subject to history! Crabbe must either have dillerium from multiple self inflicted door concusions, DFL Dumb Donny Syndrome, be at one with fumey DFL Donny Duluth Dreams, or all the above.

@Wolf it doesn’t bother me that you left northern Minney as you couldn’t see the glass is 3/4s full if you were drinking from it. I think you shouldn’t visit here if it’s so appalling to see this wonderful Progressive city prospering. Apparently the door didn’t hit you hard enough in the ass when you left.

@POP I’ve never liked jocks or abusers of women. Mocking abused women is typical DCB hatred. Why are you so angry? Enroll yourself in anger management program without more ado. Stop feeding your rage on the DCB. Oh contraire as Duluth does have elections and it’s a done deal the hierarchy isn’t ever going to change. Enjoy your fuming dream world while it lasts. 83116 - Thu Feb 18 19:20:52 2010 - [Remembering when DFL did what was right] By: Wolf
Yes, I still love Duluth, but no, I have no desire to retire there. I remember when Duluth was a city of workers who were proud and stood up for what they believed in. I dont see that now. I remember when even union members did what was right. Sadly, it seems, those types are gone. I remember when you could make a living in Duluth. And now...only if you're willing to sell your soul. I'm not sure if it was an intellectual cop-out or not; but it was a necessary move. It's tough to return and see further deterioration time after time.

Yes, I no longer live in Duluth, but it doesnt mean I dont care. I came to this blog to keep up with events....years ago the newspaper was still the rag it is today so I dont even try to rely with them. But here its the same old story month after month. I find it hard to believe that the union members outnumber public voters in Duluth. Put your efforts in the ballot box rather than keeping count for Claire. Make this a positive blog. I know alot of people who read blogs like this to determine whether this would be a city to move or vacation to.

I really do care about the people in Duluth no matter if they're old friends or people I dont know. I do know that apathy never resulted in anything but defeat.

83115 - Thu Feb 18 15:40:06 2010 - [DCB - A Place for Real Hope & Change] By: Of Politics and Prosperity
Duluth like Mass. will change. Will it be in time, well Donny hasn't resigned or done anything productive in 12 years, sooooooooo? Wolf has er' made in the shade, but continues to return to Duluth to watch her last breaths? Was it a intelligent cop out in 1982 that promotes Wolf to a consceince motivated blog here? Is Duluth where the retirement is wanted but not possible? Is it friends and family that are economically trapped here that Wolf wishes to encourage? If you live in a glass house do not throw stones, so Wolf, don't tell the bloggers of the DCB that they are happy in their misery! If you were so happy you wouldn't have blogged here.

I suspect Wolf, looking in from the outside, like myself, still loves Duluth. Duluth is, like the girl friend in high school who falls for the bully captain of the football team and marries him despite the fact he beats her. Now with her near death we just can't help but at least try to express what we feel is common sense to her! You can't do this with the DNT!!!

Duluth does not have elections, money and the media insure that. Duluth has "elected" offices, like the many for- profit-non-profits, that people purchase, like Ness and Obama did, with community threating partisonship while abusing the public treasury to maintain control! People blog here looking for support of common sense which seems to be growing, both nationally and locally. Claire's multiple names are nothing more than a bloggers frustration with a system that appears to exist in insanity but is really just corruption ignorant. Bloggin' on the DCB is not a ignorance of Duluth or its life threatening corruption!!!

83114 - Thu Feb 18 12:30:28 2010 - [Nothing has changed..nothing will change] By: Wolf
Thank you DFL, Unions, and all the career politicians who put Duluth in its' sorry state. I left Duluth in 1982 after spending years watching it head to where it is now. I owned a business that I wanted to own; not to co-own with some union, not to kiss ass with some DFL politician, and I could see the writing on the wall. Moved south, started my business again, and now I am able to retire with enough money to last me through my life comfortably. Couldn't have done it in Duluth.

I come back to visit Duluth every couple years and all I see is a dying town...just like watching someone take their last breaths. I read here regularly about all the strife going on and can only shake my head. Nothing has changed...nothing will change. I guess if I were to still live in Duluth rather than sitting around pissing and moaning about the way things are, I'd try and make a difference to make a change. But all I read on here is the same old stuff post after post. After all, who really cares how many names this Clair person uses? Does she really affect your lives that much? Must be some power she holds over you...and you let her. Pathetic.

Next time they hold an election, get out and campaign for the person you want instead of sitting in front of your PC crying on your keyboard, calling names, feeling sorry yourselves.

...but then maybe you're "happier" this way.

83113 - Thu Feb 18 11:31:10 2010 - [A Stuttering & stammering DFL Donny] By: Dave
I don't know if any on here saw the WDIO report last night about local jobs and the stimulus. Donny Boy probably gave the worst interview of his life, when he stuttered and stammered when asked how many local jobs were created due to the stimulus. He didn't have a concrete answer. He did say that jobs were created 'In the city of Duluth right now we see the lift bridge being painted and that's a federally stimulus supported project that will put many people to work all through this winter. Other projects are like some of the improvements up at the airport and other construction related projects,' Hello, earth to Donny Boy, those jobs will end, when the job is done.

Second, it is nice to see that many are lining up for another government hand out to get sewer lines repaired. Another great handout in DFL Duluth.

83112 - Thu Feb 18 11:27:50 2010 - [DFL Duluth is "Lords of the Land"] By: Of Politics and Prosperity
Tom S., a few "Lords of the Land" is a better term for what has ruined Duluth real estate. From Mom and Pop closely held Commercial to Gov't funded, tax kickback, low income, housing initiatives, that reach their goals in six years instead of projected ten years, Duluth real estate has been intentionally ruined by Duluthian "LORDS" who, if not protected by vote bought for DFL criminal application of the law, would join Bernie Madoff! The so called "humanitarian" port folio of Duluth is thick, but the same politicians and "Lords of the Land" names appear as the real benefactors when magnafided in the hardly legible footnotes of the last page. From needing to jam 70 "Chronic Cases" into a Tax Paid Euthanasic Wethouse on a 150 by 140 lot so the number of Social Security, County Aid, and other Welafare assitance checks would secure a 10 percent return on a private LLC type owned investment, run in the name of a non-profit but paying real estate taxes for accelerated LLC depreciation, and with the financing done by the wealthy's greed designed LISC, too Mom and Pop closely held rental property becoming economically unfeasible in Duluth due to the quality of remaining renters, is why Duluth Real Estate for the non-DFL mafia connected has collasped! Take a check on some of the larger "non-profit" properties that are managed by "Lord of the Land" firms in Duluth? Is there really that much fat in Steve O'Neils, "Christian of Convenience, let's help em' all Gov't?" Public health, income, Free Enterprise Business with good full time jobs, Schools, and upside down economy stastics are undeniable proof that Donny's Duluth and the County are run by cowards that base their existance only on a wallet trapped remaining small business private sector and dwindling State Aid that other State Lawmakers can see right through!

As these "business leader" Vermon spread their poison using puppet politicians, sold out media, and consume Duluth at will, Dumb DFL Donny keeps, like O'Neil, and Obama, speaking in rosey but inconsistent terms, and pushing a dead end agenda. They spout a distribution of wealth that has more to do with a "SLAVE BASED COMMUNE"-TY than a DEMOCRATIC COMMUNITY!!!!!!! One has to wonder if Robin Washington shoots a gun as straight as he writes the TRUTH?
Is there a chance his past writing has injured the innocent?!!

Honesty and Character as set forth in the Ten Commandments need not have religious sect! These ideals proved a platform for the our forefathers to establish longterm greatness. Duluth is proof with worship of the "greed god", and banning The Commandments, that ALL will eventually have NOTHING but GODS MERCY to turn too!!!!!!!!

Here we go again. The DFD going to court trying to defend this retiree health decision. How arrogant. Simonson and his union buddies are fleecing us taxpayers to death. They want to run the ambulance service to justify their jobs as they don't fight very often. The DFD needs to downsize and be assisted by volunteers in order to not bring the city into financial ruins. We need to stop the fleecing!

83110 - Thu Feb 18 01:07:40 2010 - [DFL Donny & Co. has chased out tax base] By: JBBP
Ben Dover...

For years and years and years, the Dems have been footloose about spending government funds because they've been able to play very elaborate shell games with the budget. They've managed to jack up our taxes- slowly- and they don't budget based on current tax levels...they budget based on what they think they'll manage to pilfer from our wallets.

We don't really have a choice as to whether or not we will pay our taxes. If you own a home/rental/business property, you MUST pay the assessed taxes/fees/assessments, unless it doesn't bother you to have your property siezed/forfeited. It doesn't matter at all to the libs if you can't afford the taxes that are levied- without your consent, mind you. They have just assumed that, if you lose/are forced to sell your property, then someone else who can afford to pay the taxes will come along and buy it, and they can continue their little extortion racket- and they may just receive another qualified applicant for public housing, to boot. They have had an almost guaranteed source of funding because of the fact that we have no choice but to pay property taxes... or face the consequences.

But what happens when private business is savvy enough to not locate themselves in a place where they will most certainly be taxed beyond what is fair/necessary, at a rate that will have a negative effect on their bottom line? They choose not to locate in a place like Duluth. So- PRESTO- no decent-paying jobs...no buyers for all these distressed/over-market value assessed properties...no taxes being paid on those. The Dems are left trying to hold the bag.

So, when the local tax base is pretty much dried up, they cry to the state for funding...but they need a little more justification for it in order to pull off the scheme.

It appears to me that Ness hired more city employees in the midst of this fiscal nightmare because hiring- giving people a job- would seem justified, and it would seem "cruel" to terminate the employment of these new hirings. How could anybody be so heartless as to take away somebody's job? Never mind the fact that the current political climate in Duluth not only takes away jobs, but repels them from even being brought here in the first place. And...you can safely believe...there are more strings attached to these pleas for funding than just asking the state to fund municipal jobs.

I once heard some folks talking about renting an apartment. They were approved for the Section 8 housing program. I heard one of them say,"Great! Most of the landlords around here like Section 8 because they're guaranteed to get paid!"
More funding needed for public housing and all the tax-funded bureaucracy that goes with it. Since the formula for public housing payments are set at a percentage rate, the landlords can raise the rent payments to match the rising tax rates that they pay on their rental properties(rentals cost roughly 40% more in property taxes than homesteads).

By the way, my house is for sale, so if anybody's interested, and you earn a decent income, give a holler.

I would write more, but I need to get to bed.

Thank you.

Only in DFL Duluth can you find a Duluth Assclown Team like we have. Billions of Obama spending and our so called leaders have no idea how many if any jobs have been created with the money they cried for and received. And all Donny Boy Ness can say about stimulus bill jobs is that the lift bridge is getting painted. LOL!

DFL Northeastern Minnesota now has another record that should embarrass any citizen who still remains. Worst health in the state in DFL Lake County and none of the DFL controlled counties of NE Minnesota broke out of the bottom 20% in the entire state. Thanks DFL. Add this new stat of worst health in the state to lowest wages in the state, highest poverty in the state, most expensive fire department in the state, and what do you get....

Five decades of DFL Duluth and its destructive special interests ruining a once thriving area and still wondering why this area is known as the new ghetto of Minnesota.

Keep up the good work DFL! You're number one starting from the other end.

Where are they at with the 300-ft rule and changing it. I know of at least 5 investors that would buy numerous properties that are in foreclosure or about to go into foreclosure if it wasn't for the 300 ft rule. Our city council apparently would rather these buildings bring down the entire neighborhood and city than have investors turn them into rentals. A few bad landlords have turned this whole city into a real estate mess!!!!

83106 - Wed Feb 17 20:19:50 2010 - [Stop DFD rip off & go volunteer] By: Tom A
Mr. Dover cutting city rip-off regime by 25% is a joke. There has to be at least 50% and as far as the DFD, save $20 million and go volunteer. Cities all over the nation are volunteer and are just fine. Then look at IDS709 with its outrageous expenditures. The average teacher makes over $80,000 per year in wages and benefits for 8 months of work, not to mention the Red Plan rip-off.

83105 - Wed Feb 17 18:51:57 2010 - [Obama will help Bergson end homelessness] By: mp
Because of the wisdom and success of the Obama adminstration's stimulus program, poverty and homelessness will not be a problem in Duluth. There will be no excuse to be homeless in Duluth. The government stimulus package is giving over $7,800.000 to Duluth and non-profits to provide low income housing and pay for case managers to help the homeless. All is well, no need to worry any more. I bet if you divided almost $8,000,000 among the Duluth homeless they would be "rich."

These strategies are geared to assist nonprofits with their specific activities within the five critical areas of capacity building. The approach aims to foster innovation and collaboration so that organizations are better equipped to serve those in need. It is anticipated that a total of 50- 60 organizations will participate in capacity-building training, and 45-53 will receive targeted technical assistance. Of those receiving technical assistance, at least 25-30 will receive competitive financial awards.

Curious to note that a blog touting itself as "exercising free speech" requires that comments "must be approved by a blog moderator." More curious that comments are edited by said moderator. That is sure some "free speech"!!!

STARFIRE: Denfeld, Don't blame a DCB moderator when you can't remember what you wrote. You may want to cut back on the cocktails while blogging or wipe the sleepy seeds from your eyes when you wake up at the fire hall. Or if you wish, you can submit Kool Aid commentary to the place where it belongs, the DNT.

Dream on Big Iron. The DFL Kool-Aid power brokers are the ones who fabricated the locals doing crime story. Duluth is in the state of Denial, not MN. Whether it's bogus politically correct crime stories or house values rising, the DFL is the Minister of Disinformation in DFL Duluth.

Stahl is next on the layoff list. Maybe we'll get some honest reporting on who commits crime in Duluth?...Maybe.

A handout is not a hand up for the cronic boozer. The projects of the 60's are a failure which has created multiple generations of poverty and crime. this is nothing more than special interests at work. There will never be enough wet houses for the O'Neils of the world nor the AFSCME folk that staff these wet houses.

83098 - Wed Feb 17 09:09:01 2010 - [O'Neil spending your $$ on deadbeats] By: Robert T.
Yes I agree with my Christian Brother, the reason the Seaway has the sex offenders living in it is because O'Neil has made this county attractive to them with our tax money. O'Neil no doubt is attempting to have the seaway turned into Community free housing for every Tom, Dick and Harry non-taxpaying and non-working individuals. Steve O'Neil has damaged this county enough, he is an enabler to these deadbeats. Liberalism is a mental disorder as evidenced by O'Neils continous actions.

83096 - Tue Feb 16 23:17:33 2010 - [Stahlalinski on his way out?] By: Grim Reaper
Stahlalinski is nothing more than a naive union socialist. Who ever came up with the name Stahlalinski is a prophet. Stahlinski doesn’t have a clue on return on investment or a clue about how the real world works, but fits in well with the PDD crowd. Ignorance is totally appropriate in this case. Read more on Stahlalinski’s post with the neo-socialist rump runner buddies at:

http://www.perfectduluthday.com/2010/02/12/the-axe-falls-again-at-the-dnt/

Considering his relationship with the Kiss of Death Duluth blogger, Stahlalinski is on his way out. Could it be one of those good rump runner jobs pouring lattés or printing t-shirts be in the future for Stahlalinski? Or maybe just suck at being a DJ on food stamps. It seems like he's asking to be let go and really union reporters is so 1950’s.

Ben, you make a great point about NOT shopping in Duluth. Screw Kemp and his band of criminals. Why the hell should people in Duluth pay more and more taxes to fund AFSCME benefits and salaries when AFSCME leaders don't even shop nor use union labor in Duluth. DELETED them.

BTW, that Kemp sure looks alot like Ned Flanders from the Simpsons. Unlike Kemp, Ned Flanders is a character of high moral values.

83094 - Tue Feb 16 22:12:06 2010 - [Do as they do, not as they say] By: Ben Dover
New Orleans may have the "Who dat nation" but Duluthians have the "Who dat DFLer". In Duluth's case, the dat means Duluth Assclown Team.

How can we expect this Donny Boy Ness to make a "tough choice" when he has never made a tough choice in his life before. As I recall, he knew when the budget was being prepared a couple months ago that the LGA might be cut even further. Why then did he hire all those new city workers? He is not a leader, just another DFL Assclown Team member.

This is a good time for all government employees to take an accross the board 25% cut in pay to help solve this budget crisis. If they do not like it they can go find whatever job they wish in the private sector or join the millions of unemployed Americans, whatever they so desire. It is time for true leadership and demanding a 25% cut by elected leaders would be a good start to helping solve our budget problems. DFD should take a 50% pay cut in reality, but for now let's bring them back to our planet Earth with a measley 25% cut in pay for now. And let's get rid of these 24 hour sleeping shifts and help save millions for taxpayers.

Who is Reinert going to help by allowing liquor stores to be open on Sundays, poor people? Why does Tomassoni want even more gambling? Why does the DFL insist upon harming the poorest of our citizens when they should be trying to do the opposite?

Once all these DFL Assclowns have tried stealing their way to prosperity, they will find that cutting government is the only real way out of this mess which has been created by decades of unsustainable spending increases.

In the meantime, shop anywhere but Duluth and follow the AFSCME leadership over the bridge and save some sales tax like Ken Leffler Kemp and his cronies.

Do as they do, not as they say.

Maybe Ness's only non-government experience of having his car repossessed will pay off after all. Duluth voters are so brilliant!

83090 - Tue Feb 16 17:47:41 2010 - [Dysfunctional - Nationally and locally] By: Truthism
In an interview on MSNBC this morning, newly retiring Sen. Evan Bayh declared the American political system "dysfunctional," riddled with "brain-dead partisanship" and permanent campaigning. Flatly denying any possibility that he'd seek the presidency or any other higher office, Bayh argued that the American people needed to deliver a "shock" to Congress by voting incumbents out in mass and replacing them with people interested in reforming the process and governing for the good of the people, rather than deep-pocketed special-interest groups.

Those in control and,,, political parties know the truth, like Duluth little world.

83083 - Tue Feb 16 10:11:48 2010 - [DFL stagnation never ending in Duluth] By: Adam R
Why did Ness hire 30 some new employees without knowing how the city would pay for them in these times of economic uncertainty. Is that called leadership, DFL style? Why is it always spend now and then figure out how to pay later in DFL Duluth?

When will Duluth break free from these shackles of DFL stagnation and decide to turn this community into a thriving community where the rewards are not being giving out to those who produce the least and who take the most?

Regime change should start right here in Duluth. This Ness is an absolute embarrassment! Forget all the Homo endorsements and AFSCME, DFL, DFD special interest crap, let's get some leadership for once in this city.

83079 - Mon Feb 15 13:52:05 2010 - [DFL Socialists Destroying Duluth] By: Robert T.
A certain county commissioner ( steve O'neil) wants to close the seaway so he can change the Seaway into another san marco palace. Enough already. It is said that the world is run by those people who show up. Call steve and let him know you don't approve of this waste of taxpayer money. He is a socialist liberal and can't spend the taxpayers money fast enough. my guess is he's never held a non-governmental job in his life. O'Neil is the single person most responsible for bringing not taxpaying, non-working individuals into our county. He has done more damage to all of us in the name of "homelessness" than any other single person. Lets show up at the county board meetings and let our voices be heard. Lets not sit back and let this happen.
Kind of interesting this closing of the seaway comes after a weeklong presentation by the DNT on homelessness. O'Neil is taking us for idiots. Not anymore, we don't need other states or other county's problem children, we can't afford it anymore. Liberalism is a mental disorder as evidenced by O'Neil.

83076 - Sun Feb 14 11:14:25 2010 - [DFL Duluth Non-Profit Mecca of the North] By: Dave
Should the City shut down the Seaway, as seen on the DNT. My answer to this is no. Let the owner decide that, not the city. Should the city build a new San Marco, hell no, because that would mean another damn non-profit in this city, meaning another thing that does not pay taxes. This city will soon become non-profit central, and the city officials wonder why they never have any money. Well, you have no substantial tax base to bring money into the city. It doesn't take much to figure this out. Don't spend more than you have.

Stop wasting your time. Endowed publicists possess the ability to make a point and dictate the effectiveness of political process in all sectors of communication with the public. Lamenting from behind your keyboards about preferential treatment, the number of well authored threads and developed political relationships is exactly why DCBers and the candidates they endorse will always be losers. Isn't Stahlalinski the guy who had a problem with bloggers using anonymous names back before he had a blog? And now this.... I love the DCB because it is what it is. But when somebody like Stahl criticizes anonymity and then turns around and allows his site to be a place for personal atacks on local business figures and citizens, this is nothing but hypocrisy. Any casual reader of his site can see that the Cyberslut contributes most of the comments anyway. Why does the Cyberslut get such preferential treatment from Stahlalinski? Who has written the most threads on Stahlalinski's site as of late? What kind of relationship does a person need to have with Stahlalinski to be allowed to write multiple threads on his site? It makes me wonder.

60s Warrior, Im with you on this one. I have paid union dues for over 15 years and have been in the Military for even longer. As a commissioned militry officer, I stand proud in front of my country and will do my best to protect all citizens, regardless of their political, religious, or any other beliefs. As a tax paying citizen, I find it very hard to do the same. Run and retreat is just not something that I can understand... I wasn't of age to be drafted for the Vietnam War, however, I volunteered to join the military as a way of paying back my country during the 1st Gulf War. I was subsequently deployed...served with dignity and honor...and returned. I am now faced with another trip to the desert very soon.... Once again, ready to serve my country.

As my union dues are used for political rhetoric against my fundamental beliefs, and used to pay the salaries of folks who take but do NOT GIVE BACK TO THEIR COUNTRY, frankly makes me sick. Sorry, but thats just how it makes me feel.

THE EMAIL:

From: Brandon Stahl (bStahl@gmail.com)
Date: Thu, Feb 4, 2010 at 8:32 AM
Subject: Hey
To: Anthony Ramone

I haven't read the DCB in a bit, but I noticed a few posts inferring/outright saying that I'm having sex with Claire KXXXh (name changed out of respect for the person referred to). Look, I know I'm a public figure, but that doesn't mean your site can just publish that kind of stuff. It's libel. Please take that down. The DNT is considering filing a suit if that doesn't happen.

Thanks,
Brandon
*********************END OF EMAIL*********************

Let me point a few things out.

First, this is a crock of little man shit! Nowhere on the DCB does it say or has it ever said “Brandon Stall is having sex with Claire KXXXh”. The DCB would never stoop to the same low as Brandon Stall’s email above. DCB policy is to not use full names unless it is a written publication, article, etc…

Now when Stall talks about “libel”, he must be talking about dishing it out on his Areavoices, my ass, blog.

Stall’s blog apparently allows anonymous bloggers to essentially crucify, libel, and slander local businesses and people. Ironically, this is the same Stall and Duluth News Tribune who refuse to use anonymous sources, except when it is OK to fulfill their own agenda. What a jackass!

Stall allowed the conversation on his blog, regarding the snow removal ordinance, to turn from a debate on a proposed ordinance, to libelous and slanderous comments, against a local business and its owner. Here is some of the content and links from Stall’s blog:

“some of the worse rentals in town”
“Shiprock was by far the worst”
“From what I hear around this town, that Blake guy is a horrible horrible business owner/landlord right along with his company (Shiprock Mgmt)”
http://www.areavoices.com/buzz/?page=comments&blog=70239

“Shippee is a whiner and also a little light in the the terms of both intellectual and business depth”

If I were Shiprock, I wouldn’t spend one cent with the blow asses at the Duluth News Tribune. I would advertise any other way I could. How can anyone support such stupidity? Does Stall think government grants are paying his salary? Advertisers pay his salary! What an arrogant stupid jackass!

Next, it appears acceptable to mock one of the world’s major religions on Stall’s blog. Below is the post moniker of an anonymous blogger using the name of Jesus Christ. Regardless of the religion, what kind of lowlife would allow that?

Apparently Stall thinks he is the head honcho at the Duluth News Tribune. Is the entire management team, those that are left, in on this, or has Stall gone rouge with the likes of that whack job Sarah Palin? What a jackass!

When Stall finds himself unemployed, he can only thank himself for that! One’s own agenda, double standards, and screwed up ideology will bite you in the ass sooner or later.

Stall you don’t deserve a return email but do deserve being called out and told STFU!

Have a nice day everyone else!

Ciao!

60's warrior you can kiss my ass. I made the right decision in 1968 to tear up my card and drive north of the border. Many of us knew, including Larry, that the Vietnam war was a boondogle from the start. We saw our friends and classmates die senselessly.

Larry is one of the most courageous people I know. He sticks up for the working man and gets them a fair wage. I am not sure what local union your in but your way off base in your comments about Larry.

Both Larry and I along with many others are alive today because of our choice in the sixties. Larry has made a positive difference in the labor world and I have made a positive difference in the classroom. We made the right decision so I'm asking you to back off on your comments about Larry and others who made the decision not to enter the military during the Vietnam war after being drafted.

Had I known years ago that part of my union dues were going to the yellow belly "labor world Larry's" pocket book to pay his wages I would have put a entire union stop to it. I can't understand how we patriotic union members paid the draft dodgers salary this entire time. Lets meet at the best union bar in town on Friday to discuss this issue as to why are union dues go to a draft dodger, an un-patriotic yellow belly.

Plenty of money for trails for the few who use them rather than the basic services we all need from government.

""Plans to link Duluth’s Lakewalk to the Willard Munger State Trail will be rolled out at a West Duluth community meeting today.
The 7.2-mile connector probably will cost about $7 million, estimates Kimberly Sannes, project engineer. The city already has about $3.2 million of that in hand, thanks mostly to federal funding and a local match of about $450,000.""

Donny may have had a premature endorsement with Rybak:

Mayor RT Rybak who is rumored to be endorsed by the Service Employees International Union (SEIU) apparently doesn’t have the greatest rapport with labor members.

In Governing Magazine’s online version Jim Niland is quoted:

“He’s definitely not been a friend of organized labor,” says Jim Niland, a former Minneapolis city council member who now works for the American Federation of State, County and Municipal Employees. “He hasn’t lifted a finger for union members.”

It will be interesting to see if the local SEIU members are still willing to endorse Rybak after his history of being unfriendly to labor.

83043 - Wed Feb 10 22:06:04 2010 - [Special Treatment or Double Standard?] By: PJ
The city's attorney on probation is another in a long list of DFL Duluth Double Standards. How can someone on probation prosecute another? His experience would lend you to think that he’s more qualified to be a defense attorney. Look at how little the fine was. Isn’t a DUI normally about $1,000? This guy could be a super defense attorney getting fines reduced that much, unless he got special treatment.

Seriously people, where in the hell does this female find the time to blog so much? 83041 - Wed Feb 10 20:53:07 2010 - [DFL Ghetto life grows on Donny's watch] By: Ben Dover
I can't stop laughing at all the rubes in Duluth who supported and still support this embarrassment who calls himself a "leader" and who currently holds the mayors office in Duluth.

The corruption in DFL Duluth under DFL Duluth Donny Boy Ness is unbelievable. Nepotism, economy heading South, wages decreasing in the private sector, poverty increasing, population moving away and being replaced by those on the one way tickets from Detroit, Milwaukee, Chicago and Minneapolis. And now this Head Rube Donny, after pimping the clown in the White House by telling us what a great leader he would be and who will almost certainly be a DC one termer, is telling us that RT Brokeback is a real "leader". What a farce! RT Brokeback leads Murderapolis like Donny Boy leads Duluth. More taxes on those working to pay for those in government. Growing government and crime are not good ideas for developing a thriving community Donny Boy. You and RT Brokeback seem to have a lot in common. You love making "tough choices" like raising taxes and fees and you both seem to love crime by welcoming and enabling those who commit those crimes.

Donny Boy is just making a gamble and hoping RT Brokeback gets in so that the "free" money Donny Boy so covets can once again flow to the now DFL devastated city called Duluth and Donny Boy can redistribute it and claim "progress" and "leadership" on his watch. Ask an unbiased person who visits Duluth what they think of Duluth and its roads and its general appearance and the answers are clear. From Ghetto to Gangsta, Duluth has truly made "progress" under the new DFL Donny Boy.

Good job DFL and Progressives!

83040 - Wed Feb 10 20:15:24 2010 - [Special interests run off with the loot] By: here in Duluth
We're all humans. We all make mistakes and everyone should deserve a second chance. The problem it seems is that special interests in this city pick and choose who to embrace and who to put on their knees.

The same question should be asked about the funding this town receives. With so many of our kids failing in Math, who decides where all those grants, allocations and stimulus money is spent? Things here seem so out of balance, tipped to one side again and again.

How smooth were the roads for your ride home? I know that I wacked my car out of aligment again today. Shouldn't we be investing in jobs with these funds for interests that benefit all living here, not just a few?

http://areavoices.com/biz/?blog=70528

@ Andy, I think your interpretation of some people's opinions is a little simplistic, in that I think the event is degrading to everyone involved, but it's a free country. If people want to act like idiots and degrade each other with this silly beautiful barmaid contest, go ahead. I am sure the audience was full of middle-aged guys with beer guts and those lonesome losers from the DCB, who all went because that's the closest they'll ever get to drool over a beautiful woman half their age.

I blame the women participating as much as I would blame a prostitute for having to sell her body to survive. These women all get something they need out of it, be it money, booze, whatever. I don't blame them for participating. I just think it's sad, and on some level, they realize it's humiliating to be put on display like that, in front of the dregs of Duluth. It's not like the men there are anywhere in the same league as these young women in terms of physical appearance, as we can see from the photo.
