DFL Crime Watch, your a complete Jerk. Jay Sparks is one of the most intelligent persons I've ever known. He knows our fire service like no one else. We would have preferred him to be our Chief rather than Strongitharm because of his progressive thinking.
His personal finances have nothing to do with the task force. The task force shall remain seperate and the discussion should remain focused on how the Duluth Fire Department will make money providing Ambulance service to our citizens. End of Story |

Jay Sparks who is on the DFD Ambulance Task Force made the December 25, 2009 St. Louis County Financial Record. A State of Minnesota tax lien in the amount of $2,274.52 has been filed by the state against Sparks.
Sparks, a DFD insider, is on a task force to advise the City of Duluth on how to spend money but didn’t pay his taxes and obviously can’t manage his own affairs.
Further investigation on the state website, http://pa.courts.state.mn.us/default.aspx
Choose: JUDGEMENT SEARCH
Last name: SPARKS
First name: JAY
You will see that there are three judgments totaling $209,743.36 against Sparks.
How embarrassing for DFL Duluth!

82545 - Sun Dec 27 21:01:21 2009 - [Obsolete, burdensome & the economy] By: JBBP |
Fair wages and benefits for union workers would/should amount to the average pay earned by workers in the private sector who are performing comparable tasks.
If not for the fact that union workers need to pay union dues in order to belong to a union, their wages and benefits wouldn't need to be higher than those offered/earned in the private sector...if the union wasn't there.
Also...can union workers choose their own health insurance companies and still be covered by the union, or do union workers need to all be on the same plan, same network, etc.?
If workers must adhere to the insurance companies being brokered by the unions, that does indeed smell of collusion between the insurance industry and the unions, one would think. It may in part explain the rocketing costs of health insurance premiums...the government is paying for alot of them through negotiations with unions on behalf of their government-employed members...who in turn pay for their dues/insurance from the extra the union has managed to coerce from too many elected officials, who view the unions as another political tool that will help them(the elected officials) to stay in power, through campaigning/money/influence.
It may appaear that the average Joe taxpayers are the pawns in this situation, but really, it's the union members, who have been psyched into thinking that their jobs are being secured by the very unions who are always fighting for their turn to suck on the tax base. The unions aren't really fighting for their members. They're fighting for their own survival, trying to justify their obsolete and burdensome role in labor and the economy in general.
Thank you. |

Yep and so do millions of other people who do not belong to some under worked over paid union. One needs only to look at the infrastructure of Duluth and see how "union" workers have all but destroyed this city. If they had been doing their job this city would not be falling apart and bankrupt. Now you want to bankrupt every last citizen of Duluth to pay for your lazy ass. Enjoy those half hour to one hour coffee breaks and getting started one half hour after punching in to work. It shows. Proud? Proud of what? You should be ashamed.

You hate fairness, you hate having to pay your fair share to make this a better city to live. all you care about is yourselves. Privatize is that your real agenda. You want to profit off public services. Let me tell you something, that will never happen, we will stand up to greed and your "pro business" anti labor agenda. Your jealous of us, because we have good jobs that pay a living wage. We work when others sleep. We work when others have holidays. Without our services this city would not work. Ben Dover you can come down to the Reef anytime with your boyfriend jthyme. jthyme: Quit talking like that. You make too much sense. Common sense in DFL Duluth has been replaced by this mafia union thug mentality that is raping this city from the top DFLer, Donny Boy Ness down to the ass clowns running around on city graders at triple time.
Common sense would suggest that the whole public works be privatized and put the snow plowing into the hands of a private contractor with low bid. Then the taxpayers would not have to pay the AFSCME extortion wage thus saving millions of dollars and the employees of the private contractor would be working, tax paying folks who would CONTRIBUTE to building a tax base, not more DFL Duluth government waste that is currently bankrupting the city. At 1 billion in debt right now, how long will it take for the city formerly known as Duluth to go bust? It will happen, it is just a matter of time.
How to explain this kind of common sense of privatizing public works to a DFL Duluth assclown is the difficult part. All they know is while almost 50% of the population in DFL Duluth earns less than $10 an hour, they expect 3 to 4 times that plus all the benefits because they think they have this right after all the ass they sucked to get in in the first place.
Sorry assclowns, giving helmet shiners to attain employment within the DFL Duluth mafia is not something to be proud of.
Don't believe me, look at what Ireland, Greece, and Hungary have finally decided to do to save their countries. Although very unpopular, they have decided to make deep cuts to government salaries and benefits to save their respective countries. Problem is in the US, nobody has the balls to do it. They just keep making hard choices like DFL Donny and raising taxes. Problem is Donny Boy, when almost half the polulation already earns less than $10 and hour, how much more taxing can you do? One day it will become a necessity to do the same cutting here in the US as others have learned and then listen to the crying from the DFL assclowns! It will make our local DFL Duluth whiner, Milosevich seem like a team player.
People have to learn to toughen up, the fun is just starting. Real change is yet to come. |

So how many are still waiting for a city snow plow? They've never been here once. If they would've been here after the first snow on thursday, it wouldn't be so bad now. It's going to take them a long time now after it has been packed and tracked and plowed by homeowners.
If I lived out in the sticks, I would expect to have to own a plow truck, but it tells me something when everyone around this neighborhood has one.
It's a good thing I can at least read the LIB READER ONLINE as they can't get here to deliver it. |

DATE: 12/25/2009
NATURE OF INCIDENT: Home Burglary
CASE NO.: 09420892
INCIDENT DATE :12/24/2009
INCIDENT TIME: 10:57 PM
INCIDENT LOCATION: 1031 West Fourth Street
SUBJECT: Police Arrest two in Christmas Eve Home Burglary
BY: Officer Brad Wick, Information Coordinator
Police Arrest Two for Christmas Eve Home Burglary
On Thursday, December 24th, 2009 at 23:17 hours, Duluth Police responded to 1031 West Fourth Street on the report that the owner had just returned home and found the back door open. When officers arrived, it was determined that the home had been burglarized and several items were missing.
Officers found tracks leading from the rear of the home to the alley where they found some of the items taken in the burglary. While officers were in the alley, they observed a vehicle pull into the alley with three male occupants. The vehicle left quickly after seeing the officers. Officers stopped the vehicle and the three males fled from it on foot. Two males were located within a short time and taken into custody while the third male was not located. Officers determined all three were involved in the home burglary and returning to the alley to pick up the stolen property.
The first suspect, Michael Scott Sampson, age 18 of Duluth, has been lodged at the St. Louis County Jail pending formal charges for Burglary in the Third Degree, Fleeing Police on Foot, and Giving a False Name to Police. The second suspect in custody, a 17 year old Duluth male, has been lodged at the Arrowhead Juvenile Center pending formal charges for Burglary in the Third Degree and Fleeing Police on Foot. A third male suspect is not yet in custody.
The investigation into the incident is ongoing and no further information is available at. The Duluth Police Department would like to the thank the following agencies who assisted in this incident: the St. Louis County Sheriff's Office; the Minnesota State Patrol; the University of Minnesota-Duluth Police; and the United States Border Patrol. |

What does "Obama Care" and a colonoscopy have in common? Both are all about WASTE!!!
God and history teaches us, those who live in a glass house should not throw stones! Reform, Change, and any of the other lies coming from 30 years of failure that The DFL Duluth City Hall has nurtured and for too long has come from the Nations Capitol, ring a ridiculously unworkable tone as our law making processes have degraded to publicly recognized, out and out, debauchery. At least the corruption claims against the Bush GOP had attempts to be hidden by the supposed age old earmark games that tried to conceal unmorale behavior. There is no way this Health Reform Act will benefit anyone except the Big Money Mongers who now, supposedly, are paying back their billons so they can get back to "business as usual?" There is no "Obama Change!" The DFL are shamelessly worse than their whipping post Bush! It's business as usual with little or no shame as they insure against any hope of needed moral acts that could produce nation saving change.
Who is behind this society's destructive motive? Had the common citizen acted so corruptly and carlessly as the country's current DFL, it's fiscal leaders, and Duluth politicians, they would be in jail or sleeping in the streets! As a matter of fact, it's exactly what awaits non-government working middle class America. As Rome burns, "The Obamaination" takes control of every moveable fiscal part and freedom of our counrty. This is identical to what has transpired in The Record Holding Low Income Duluth!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! How blatant need the lesson be??????? How do we demand Donny Ness pay back Duluth from his personal resources for Aircraft Maintenance Facilities, Parking Ramps without contracts, Fish Tanks and the horrible business atmostphere that Duluth lays claim too!!!!!!!!!! We can't, he is only a brainlessly selfish puppet for those who think they are "GREATER" and would use their corrupt money for corrupt gain while they abuse their neighbors rights and possesions.
DEMOCRACY IS NOT A PERMANENT FORM OF GOVERNMENT, IT WILL ONLY EXIST UNTIL IT'S PEOPLE LEARN THEY CAN VOTE THEMSELVES LARGENESS FROM THE PUBLIC TREASURY!!!!!!!!!! This, not Health Care Reform, is the historic presidence of today!!!!!!! |

Maybe your contributors can explain why CK is so disliked. You mention tone and attitude, how would you describe the general tone and attitude of most of your contributors? Certainly not congenial or respectful. Despite your sarcastic tone, I agree it would be nice to get along. Maybe I could present a couple of questions and some of your readers could respond. Would it be OK to do that?
-How do you know Cornholio is not CK just goofing with you?

Pro DFD keep telling us like it is at the expensive DFD. Especially the "NO CHANGE" part. It reminds me of the alcoholics that go to treament but never 'get it.' Like the guy who had been in treatment 14 times and was still insisting ... 'NO CHANGE!!'
Others that might abstain from alcohol but they are drunk on their power and position.
There are good things that firefighters might have in common but it's not fair to say 'we' and assume all want only to serve the public.

82505 - Wed Dec 23 10:01:42 2009 - [Sad when government plays with our lives] By: Michael |
Kathy S. I am very sorry about the loss of your son. I believe we the people will be experiencing more of this preventable loss of life of our loved ones as government gets more involved in our health care.
For example, every time the government doesn’t have enough money they threaten our government public safety, police and fire. It makes no sense to have the DFD or any other government entity threatening us in an effort to extort more money from us to pad there much higher than the private sector wages and benefits. If a private entity did this, they would be out of business. Private firms have motivation and the government sector does not.
As far as first responders go, it is my opinion that they do all they can until the patient is at the hospital. A doctor should be the only one to make a decision that is so difficult for all involved. This is the framework that should be mandated by the government, from the bottom up. Unfortunately, the more government gets involved in our heath care, the more rationing will occur because of political and cost reasons.
Again, I am very sorry about the loss of your son. God bless.

82503 - Wed Dec 23 09:20:39 2009 - [Keep the DFD most expensive in USA!] By: Pro-DFD |
Just returned home from shift. East House watcher just a word of advice, we don't dictate the number of fire or medical calls coming in. We are equipped to handle many calls or as few as 2 calls per day. The bottom line is we're at the ready when the taxpayers need us.
We train daily to be prepared to save your life if needed. We risk our life on every call to server the public. You probably should get your calls for service numbers correct because those numbers are not accurate. I will defend the men and women in our fire department every time someone like yourself attempts to take a shot at us. DFD is here to stay with a full compliment of staff 24/7. "NO Change" |

82502 - Wed Dec 23 07:41:12 2009 - [Eliminate DFD waste, save $2,000,000] By: House Watcher East |
Woodland firehall calls in last 9 days. A total of 2 calls and both were minor medical calls. 9 days to pay for 2 full time firefighters to handle 2 calls cost the taxpayers a total of $14,480 in wages and this does not include the benefits package.
As stated earlier we will be updating you on this blog reference the Woodland firehall and the calls for service.
There are 3 firehalls in our city which should be closed for lack of calls and they are Gary, Woodland and Park Point. For the calls these stations go on it doesn't make financial sense to staff these.
If this were to happen, closing of Woodland, Gary and Park Point halls it would eliminate the need for 15 full-time firefighters which would then put our city in line with other cities our size and we would not be the most expensive fire department in the state per citizen.
This can be done through attrition and not layoffs.
With benefits added this would be just under a 2 million dollar savings. As our president says, "Yes we Can" |

Mother Calls EMTs Who Ignored Her Dying Pregnant Daughter 'Inhuman'
Tuesday , December 22, 2009
ADVERTISEMENTThe Brooklyn District Attorney's office is looking into the actions of two emergency medical technicians accused of refusing to help a pregnant woman who collapsed in the coffee shop where they were taking a break.
A spokesman for the office said it was investigating to see if any laws were broken.
The two were suspended from their jobs Monday, and Mayor Michael Bloomberg called their behavior inexcusable.
The Fire Department of New York suspended Jason Green, a six-year veteran, and Melissa Jackson, a four-year veteran, without pay while the Dec. 9 incident is investigated, spokesman Steve Ritea said.
The mother of a pregnant woman says the emergency medical technicians accused of refusing to help her are "inhuman."
Cynthia Rennix told The Associated Press on Tuesday that she could never have imagined an EMT refusing to aid someone. She says they shouldn't have those jobs if they aren't willing to get involved.
Witnesses, first speaking to The New York Post, said the EMTs told employees at the eatery in downtown Brooklyn to call 911 and then left when they were asked to help Eutisha Revee Rennix, an employee who had collapsed.
An ambulance was called, and Rennix, 25, was taken to Long Island College Hospital, where she died a short time later. Her baby girl was too premature to survive. A message left for Rennix's mother Monday wasn't immediately returned.
Home telephone listings for Jackson and Green weren't unavailable. A call Monday evening to the EMT's union office wasn't immediately returned.
Ritea said that all FDNY members "take an oath to assist others whenever they're in need of emergency medical care. It's their sworn duty."
A union spokesman said Monday that EMTs generally consider their jobs to be a 24-hour kind of thing.
"Our people tend to spring into action whether they're on duty, off duty, whatever they're doing," said Robert Ungar, spokesman for the Uniformed EMTS and Paramedics, FDNY.
The city's EMTs have a "very strong bond with the people of New York City that they serve," he said. "They view themselves as always being on duty."
He said the union was waiting to see what the results of the Fire Department's investigation would be.
"If there was unprofessional conduct by these EMTs, the union does not condone any type of conduct which in any way can harm members of the public," he said.
On Monday, Bloomberg repeated comments he made over the weekend criticizing the EMTs, saying refusing to help goes against human decency.
"There's no excuse whatsoever," he said.

Questions, I quit watching city council meetings as it was not good for my blood pressure. Did you ever see that comic where the guy had his foot stuck in the picture tube of his TV. I think he was watching a Duluth city council meeting. You need to put any effort you have to try and change things in before the meeting and then skip watching the meeting.
I did catch part of a city council meeting on the radio a while back and could hear things have not changed much. In the end they always go alone with the tax, spend and higher fees. Even if they blow off or vote down a tax, spending or fee the same issue will arise again later and they will eventually go after the taxpayer in one way or another. Never any "tough" decision. |

DATE: 12/21/2009
NATURE OF INCIDENT: Robbery
CASE NO.: 09418642
INCIDENT DATE :12/20/2009
INCIDENT TIME: 1728 hours
INCIDENT LOCATION: 3200 Block of Restormel Street
SUBJECT: K9 Tracks two suspects in Cab Robbery
BY: Officer Brad Wick, Duluth Police Department
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
On Sunday, December 20, 2009 at 5:28 PM, Duluth Police responded to the 3200 Block of Restormel Street to investigate the report that a Yellow Cab driver had just been robbed by two juvenile males. The suspects fled the cab on foot with the cab keys and a small amount of cash.
Upon arriving in the area, officers set up a perimeter and a Canine Unit from the Hermantown Police Department was requested to assist. Hermantown Officer Tom Wick and his canine partner Nero began tracking the two suspects which led them to a home in the 3100 Block of Vernon Street. At this address, officers located two juvenile males who matched the description of the suspects. These two juveniles were later identified by the victim cab driver as the suspects in the robbery.
The two juvenile suspects, ages 14 and 15 and both from Duluth, were transported to the Arrowhead Juvenile Center where they are being held pending formal charges for Simple Robbery, a felony.
The investigation into this robbery has been turned over to the Duluth Police Department Violent Crimes Unit; no further information is available at this time.

jthyme, I'm with Cynic on this one. It's a government job! They've been installing the 'sally port,' which cost millions, to safeguard the transport of prisoners from the public. They feel that these prisoners might get away from the guards and be a threat to society when being transported into courthouse.
It's just too bad the DCB only celebrates 'Festivus.' I was hoping to give one of the DCB'rs, namely Cynic, a BIG Christmas present.

I see that Stahlalinski is picking on the little guy Howie Hanson for getting $19,000 for a contract promoting the district. Never mind the big picture that the average DFL Duluth union teacher gets $80,000 in salary and benefits, plus a solid retirement, for working less that 8 months. So much for the big picture, but then again Stahlalinski is 100% union.
On a side note, it looks like C uses at least 4 different identities in the thread on the Buzz.

SMDC is a non profit maybe the city should take over there too. There are dozens of non profits in Duluth. Perhaps the city should take over all of them. Get real blah blah blah. Gold Cross employees and SMDC employees pay real taxes and pay real unions dues. I am also sure employees of both places take "public safety" very seriously. Gold Cross employees have families to feed and are not a burden on the taxpayers as they have paying jobs.
DFD sure screams when you mention volunteers even if you say there will be no DFD lay offs with the training and implementation of volunteers to help out.

82480 - Sat Dec 19 23:12:52 2009 - [The goat story was really bad] By: maxey m |
| The goat story was really bad. KBJR was worse than the newspaper, saying what will happen. WDIO simply said that the goat was safe and returned to its owner. Thats all we needed to know. Jesus was born in a manger at Christmas time with many goats, sheep, cattle, camels. The man bought the beautiful red goat off of craigslist, it was probably a pet that someone had to sell? It was reported that it was being kept in a garage in Superior. Did it have food and water, was it cold in the garage, is that why it escaped? The city of Superior spent a lot of time and resources to safely capture the poor thing and they should go and get it, and place it in a place that will not harm it. Is it legal to to do this in Superior Keep a goat in your garage until you are going to kill it? What would Jesus do. Our children should not be exposed to this at Christmas time. I think the goat was being abused. The owner is not in Nigeria last time I checked. Being a UWS professor does not give him the right to have the goat back. |

I need to tell the person whos garage did burn down. So sorry. Last year in February an alarm went out from the Duluth court house as a fire alarm. You can see the firestation downtown from a court house window. Everyone in the court house gathered their coats shut all the doors and went into the halls to wait for the DFD to respond. It took 15 minutes. Now a firealarm system that goes off is not necessarily 911, bear with me, the alarm goes to some private alarm company and the they call 911. This takes too much time. You say it took 15 minutes for DFD to get there. From when they actually got the call it may have been only 5 minutes. You are right, Their is something wrong with the communication. We should be looking into how 911 actually works and not blaming the DFD. I know for a fact that where live they are always here within minutes of when I call. Now regarding GCA they are a non profit therefore they do not pay any taxes at all. All they do is profit. GCA is first a business, it is not here for pubic safety. Health care is the third leading cause of death in this country. Henipen, county has mobile ambulance postings but they only work 8 hour shifts. Hermantowns mayor wants their own ambulance and Superior does not need to change a law to get rid of Gold cross.

We live roughly 6 blocks from the Gary fire hall. Several years back, we had a garage fire. Guess how long it took them to make it to our fire after our call? 15 MINUTES (no, they were not on another call either)!
Of course by then the garage was a total loss. Good thing there were no vehicles inside that morning.
Is it any wonder why I flip off the firemen any time I see them? |

Just for your information DCB bloggers. In the last 11 days the Gary firehall has been called out just once. In the meantime the taxpayers have been paying for 2 firefighters the last 11 days to staff that hall to the tune of over $16,000 dollars.
I can just hear the fire union now saying, "yes but we need those 2 fire fighters there because of public safety and IAFF and NFPA guidelines say we need to keep things as they are because if we shut that hall down the citizens are not going to be safe anymore", I mean you get the point.
We have been watching several halls and will be reporting back on this blog. It's unreal the waste of money we're seeing.
Woodland fire hall is not far behind. We'll tell you later because there is some developing news coming forward we think. |

The UN Copenhagen climate change plan to charge you for cutting down trees. Shame on you!!!
"A second way to redistribute revenues uses a withholding
mechanism in the form of a levy or tax on emissions reductions, as proposed by WHRC and TNC. Under these mechanisms a proportion of revenues is withheld in a fund and then paid out to REDD countries in the form of
stock payments. The key to both of these approaches is that the revenue required to support HFLD countries is generated from the mechanism itself. Potential disadvantages of these approaches are the distorting effect that redistribution could have on incentives to reduce emissions in countries with high rates of deforestation. The alternative to a redistribution mechanism is to use an additional
financial mechanism. Many proposals suggest a “stabilisation fund” that would use additional funding to address leakage and equity concerns in HFLD countries. The revenue for a stabilisation fund could come through a variety of sources including voluntary funds or innovative finance mechanisms such as the auctioning of allowances or levies on shipping or aviation." |

The surge in Afghanistan has started. In about 30 days you'll be seeing on TV and hearing on the radio waves that the United States Military is kicking ass as they did in Iraq after getting the amount of troops which were asked for.
I'm comfortable with our community organizing president make the right decision for once.
I feel like I want to put on the old uniform and defend her again. Corporal, are you out there my friend. Lets do it again and fight for freedom. What do you say?
Of course we know Draft Dodger Larry won't be anywhere near us as he ran once before and he'll run again. |

STARFIRE: Positivi Tee, every year, but it is by invite only and we don't call it a Christmas party. We don't want to offend anybody in this hyper sensitive city formerly known as Duluth. The DFL Kooks might bring in the ACLU. Can't be too careful with the large influx of Kooks who have come to the area spreading their hate and spreading the DFL Duluth agenda of devasting the entire area. The message of "Exercising Free Speech" will hang on the banners on the walls at the party as usual. For more on what a Kook is, there seems to be a discussion about one of the most notorious transient Kooks below. Pretty sad that Duluth has to deal with these kinds of Kooks. |

Just up from the secretary's house. I see that the residents in and near Cloquet who are being served by the Cloquet area ambulance are up in arms because the city of Cloquet will be charging them more on their taxes to have Cloquet Fire provide the ALS ambulance service. Some parts of rural cloquet will see their taxes go up 43 percent to have the Government run (city of Cloquet Fire) provide ALS ambulance service to residents of Cloquet.
Can you say Gold Cross Ambulance Service, private corporation!! What's your thoughts on this Simonson. Forget your Chief's aspiration fella. Your move to Duluth won't be worth it. You should have stayed in the Cloquet Fire District and paid the additional taxes.
I'm actually kinda liking this "hopey and changy thing". |

Kathy S,
You need to stop talking....you make comments like "Duluth is a training ground for new paramedics to move on," yet comment on the 30 year veterans that are here in Duluth. Tell me, if DFD started running ambulance calls...would they be new paramedics?....How about every last one of them!
EMT-P is also a 2 year program, not a 3 month program. It is actually an Associates degree.
By the way, who is going to cover Rice Lake, Normana, Proctor, Hermantown, Solway, Clifton, Canosia, etc, etc....? DFD ambulance is a losing battle, and if Cuneo and Anderson would put as much effort into things that could actually make a difference in this city, we might just get somewhere.
Get out of your little dream world and stop making stuff up. |

All I can suggest is spend your money anywhere but DFL Duluth and help put this city out of its current DFL misery.

How many handles does "C" use. I encourage everyone to add to this list.
Here's a new one I found on Areavoices Buzz.
Disgusted (at herself and her husband I assume)
Ernest Simpson. (Thanks for spotting that one Big Iron)
It is I
Suzanne (one of her "feminist" handles)
Shakespeare (must read alot to come up with a handle like this)
IKMN (I know my name. Yes "C" , we also KYRN)
Exercising my constitutional rights
Tony R
Anthony
Duluth Voter (UMD neighborhood)
Tony Ramone Sr. (yup, penis envy)
Carmody Fan ( "C" has a big time hard-on for Danny. She's obsessed with his pod casts)
Stalker Watcher
A Friend
Sherlock Holmes (no shit Sherlock, this handle is used by "C")
Moron Watcher (must have lingered in front of the bathroom mirror to come up with this one)
Danny Sucks (like Danny has never heard this before)
Danny is Stupid (envious of his creative podcast)
FaceBooker (many friends including numerous east coast elitists)
Psychiatrist (should consult with one ASAP, narrcistic personality disorder is getting out of hand)
Just Saying (and saying, and saying...)
Fireman
STARFIRE: Cyberslut Watch, I am sure that "C" meant to call herself Disgusting, not Disgusted. My guess is that all it took was a look by the Snagglepuss in the mirror one morning and the name came like that. |

82439 - Wed Dec 16 18:25:38 2009 - [GCA goes, DFD would turn the pillow over] By: Rich T. |
Kathy S, in saying that the 75 year old with a wax clogged ear is not an emergency you have validated my point entirely. GCA goes. DFD does not in the current system. GCA is paid for in-part by lots of calls like that. I don't know the exact number, but my guess on the transport calls are about 1:1 per every emergency, possibly higher. A Duluth Fire Ambulance (probably set up like LA or NY) would not transport that individual. This would be due to concerns over not having a rig back at the hall to respond to "real" medicals in their district, the time delay of an actual transport (try upper-Woodland or Gary to St. Mary's), and the more-than-likely astronomical fees upfront that the patient wouldn't be able to pay.
City-run ambulance services rarely do routine (non-lights and sirens) transports. You'd be adding costs to hospital stays, medical insurance, and worst of all many people who call 911 for medial help now would no longer receive any help at all because they'd be told "the ambulance is not coming for you."
Don't believe me? Go to New York and get a cold or a bloody nose and call 911 for help. They'll hangup laughing. |

82438 - Wed Dec 16 18:05:29 2009 - [Can no longer sustain DFD costs ] By: Cynic |
I posted the identity and experience in the field of the person making this quote before and it was substantial.
Quote: "It would appear that we can no longer sustain the costs of maintaining expensive, inefficient, all-ALS EMS systems that fail to produce data showing improved patient outcomes. Throwing money and resources at systems that are designed around the dubious response time criteria of a singular event, accounting for a low percentage of our total responses, is no longer an option in this economic climate.
In most communities, response time standards are based on data that is only relevant to cardiac arrest survival, despite the fact that cardiac arrest comprises of less than 2-4 percent of calls in virtually all EMS systems. This decision is extremely costly, offers dubious benefit to patients, and subjects EMS personnel and the public to unwarranted risk due to excessive use of emergent response for calls that are almost certainly non-emergent." |

| DFL 09, I guess you missed that post a while back that pretty much showed this so called quicker response you may or may not get from DFD is pie in the sky thinking that really has little to nothing to do with actual outcome of medical emergency calls. It's a farce and meaningless time frame put out by people like you to make the public think they need more not less fire department personnel. |

82436 - Wed Dec 16 17:31:31 2009 - [DFD should take over SMDC ] By: Cynic |
I'm pretty sure SMDC(a large employer in Duluth) along with most other employers only pay overtime after 40 hours. Perhaps the City of Duluth should take over SMDC. Are you telling me Kathy S that people actually get overtime without having 40 hours in? Now that must be a "gold" contract. Either way it has absolutely nothing to do with whether the DFD takes over Gold Cross jobs. Gold Cross is a private business and as long as they are going by "state law" as you stated who gives a shit. I'm not paying their wages as I will be if DFD takes over.
Kathy S. said: "Yes GCA employees have health care benifits, yes they are paid overtime-only after 40 hours, state law." |

No one to respond? What exactly do you mean by this Kathy S.? No one? Doesn't the DFD respond to emergencies? Exactly what are you talking about responding to? You sound as if there are no standards whatsoever that Gold Cross Ambulance has to live by. I am sure there are many rules and regulations they must follow.
Kathy S said: "Also since paramedics are now on the streetin their Rigs employees turn their pagers off. No longer want the overtime. Leaving no one to respond." |

82427 - Wed Dec 16 12:53:20 2009 - [$30/hour is chump change for DFD PAC] By: Kathy S |
| Firemen in Duluth work 10-11 shifts per month all 3 shifts. As far as 75 year old person with ears clogged-ear wax at 3 am is not an emergency. Yes GCA will transport for money and ER will also see for money. Yes GCA employees have health care benifits, yes they are paid overtime-only after 40 hours, state law. Many work full time but even more work part time. Thank you for pointing this out to me. Feel free to discuss anything else you would like. 28/30 year vetran paramedics GCA earning 17-18 dollars per hour. Standard pay across the state is 30+ dollars per hour GCA uses Duluth as a training ground new direct out of school paramedics, low low pay. No experience equals potential harm. Obama philosophy is using the Mayo Clinic as a new health care directive. I guess they charge less for services. The city would hire GCA paramedics and EMT, train them as fire-paramedics. Three months of class at LSC and they offer day and night classes. At this time ther is much animosity by GCA employees toward the DFD. Not good for public safety. My personal experience calling 911 is the firemen arrive in about 3 minutes, but then everyone is forced to wait for GCA. GCA call volume has increased for many many years now. Yet their staffing remains the same. Freguently GCA runs out of ambulance crews and may have emergency calls pending, with no avaiable crew to send. Also since paramedics are now on the streetin their Rigs employees turn their pagers off. No longer want the overtime. Leaving no one to respond. Please go to Craigslist, Duluth MN, local news and read letter. Thank you all for getting this important discussion going again. Lets do what is best for the innocent public. Duplication of services puts everyone at risk. Christmas blessings to you all. |

82424 - Wed Dec 16 08:13:36 2009 - [Retired DFDer "if the public knew" ] By: Tourv |
My facts are correct DFL09. The Duluth fire members know what they cost the city and understand exactly how many days per year they work. Duluth isn't big enough to have the additional firefighters sitting around and "waiting" for a fire call. A now retired firefighter once said these words, "if the public knew how little we did they'd be outraged". DFL09, my assumption is your a fire union board member with little common sense and knows even less about city finances. It's union members such as yourself that have given other union employees a bad reputation. I've gotten to know a little bit about the fire department and how they operate over the years, in fact, I'm betting you and I have sat across the table discussing these very issues. DFL09, I'll beat you in any discussion reference finances and your fire department. Going several years back your fire department has lacked leadership and still does.

We work for you everyday of the year, 24 x 7, to provide the best first responder and fire department in the nation, not the most expensive. There's no need for dual first responders as we can do what needs to be done sooner and at much less cost. Gold Cross is yesterday's way and Duluth deserves more of the best. The DFD is simply the best, better than all the rest. |

82420 - Tue Dec 15 14:00:51 2009 - [DFD-most expensive in USA per capita] By: Dave |
Tourv,
If the DFDers only work 66 days a year and are not efficient, why doesn't the media do some real reporting. With retiree health care added in there, they are the most expensive fire department in the USA per capita according to a friend of mine. This is sickening. |
|
82419 - Tue Dec 15 07:58:49 2009 - [DFD-$72,000 salary for 66 days of work] By: Tourv |
Once the numbers are given out you'll soon see that the option of having the fire department take over the ambulance service will break the bank. If you think your fire department is the most expensive in the state of Minnesota, just wait and crunch the numbers if they provide the ambulance service. Several years ago there was an inside study done in finding a way for the fire department to become more efficient. Manpower reduction gave way to any other option and was shown to be viable.
The fire union went bonkers over the suggestion and Doty backed down. To the Duluth Tax payers, ask yourselves this question. "Why is it that the Duluth Fire deparment is so heavily involved in city politics?" Answer: Because they need to be to keep their jobs. Do you realize that Duluth Fire members work 66 days per year(this takes into account their vacation and kelly days off), sleep one-third the time on duty(total of 22 days sleeping per year) and make on average $72,000 per year.
At the time of the study, 31 Duluth fire members had other part-time jobs or owned other businesses. Are you getting the picture Duluthians.

82418 - Mon Dec 14 23:30:10 2009 - [GC employees live in cities they serve] By: Inside Look |
Kathy S.
You really have no clue... Please dont post things that you dont know about as fact. Yes, Gold Cross Paramedics are underpaid, however, they do get full health insurance, education benefits, company matched 401K, and overtime....sometimes too much overtime. Yes, some of the profits go to Rochester, but look at the amount of money that the 45 FULL TIME (not part time as YOU stated) paramedics spend in this city. A larger percentage of Gold Cross's workforce actually lives in the city and pays taxes HERE... IN THE CITY OF DULUTH! You cant say that about DFD. Yes, I admit that there are some medics that live in Douglas County, but Gold Cross provides service over there too. GET YOUR FACTS STRAIGHT! |

Oh I see if Gold Cross Ambulance was taken over by DFD there would be no fear of falling asleep. In fact they would be given their own bunk to fall asleep in while working overtime on the taxpayers dime. Gottcha!

Kathy S, you present these "facts" as if they were in fact, fact; they are not. You're argument seems to revolve around the fact that Gold Cross is a poor company with poor employees - I don't see many volunteers jumping to get up at 3 a.m. and rush out in the cold for a 75 year old with a wax clogged ear who refuses to take a taxi to the hospital. And you're right Kathy public safety is about helping the public - but the last time I checked, there are still human beings and members of the "public" who live outside of Duluth. If GCA dropped service here and Duluth Fire picked it up you would create a huge service gap all over southern St. Louis County, putting those people at risk.
I am disappointed I have to continually explain this, but Duluth Fire Ambulance won't happen now, and isn't a viable option for at least quite some time or another population boom. When it does become a service many will be disappointed in the lack of service it will provide - considering cities like Los Angeles and New York refuse patient transport or patient care in certain conditions that GCA now cares for (see the ear example above). It's fine to ask questions and push for better care, but the way it has been suggested is not only illegal, it won't fly with the public. Take it from someone who knows. |

| It's interesting that a barrel of oil has dropped about 10% but the DFL Duluth price has stayed at $2.59. But then again no one should be surprised as everything cost more in DFL Duluth. From the Red Plan rip-off to gas to heat your house to eating out, and soon the ambulance service as everything cost more in DFL Duluth. I’m surprise they haven’t found a way to surcharge all the people that have fled DFL Duluth in the last 25 years. At $100 a head there’s an easy $300,000. |

Dolla Bill writes, "Gas is $2.39 in the Twin Cities, but not in DFL Duluth." Do you suppose this person really believes the DFL has anything to do with gas prices? I just cleared snow from my driveway, maybe the DFL is responsible for that snow drift also. I backed into a pole with my car. Is that the DFL's fault too?

| Yes Big Iron I noticed that too about no comments about Samborski. Not sure why the city keeps using him as a promoter, given his track record. How many concerts has he screwed up? I remember that collective soul concert a while back where he decided at the last minute to start it early, and the main act was over by the time everyone got there. So Rod Raymond, Gardner, and samborski all three are weasels and have done people wrong. (especially raymond) |

| Just up from the secretary's house. Pro-DFD when the committe recommends that Gold Cross stay in Duluth because they are a private company will you then get off this ambulance kick. When the recommendation comes forward you better hang on to your union brothers because the taxpayers will find a councilor to request a study to eliminate your fleecing of us. We don't want to have the most expensive fire department in the nation per capita. Lets go volunteer during the time you guys sleep the most which is from about 9PM-6pm. To have 40 of you guys sleeping at night is a big fleece to us taxpayers. Pro dfd your nothing but a mouth piece. |

Morning Duluth rag letter to the editor:
"Regarding arguments that the city of Duluth should take over ambulance service now provided by the private, nonprofit Gold Cross Ambulance, I can see it now: Every time there is a budget problem, the mayor or City Council will threaten to cut ambulance service along with police, fire, libraries and the like. The ambulance service we in Duluth have now lives within its budget without crying. It is a self-sufficient business, doesn’t go on strike, doesn’t threaten to leave and is just there when needed.
Could it be better? Yes, I’m sure, but after the city adds new employees, (you can’t be both a firefighter and ambulance driver), new equipment, garages and who knows what else, the cost could be unbelievable.
And then there are the possible cuts to health care. Will they affect our ambulance service? No one knows, but why take on a potential risky business in questionable times?"
