Question for the Duluth Media, (or anyone else) How much money has been spent on the Comp. Plan?#2 How many jobs will be created from this plan and how will the average citizen of Duluth benefit from it?#3 Is this the next RED PLAN being unfolded before our very eyes?#4 With millions of Americans out of work who better to serve the city than someone who has been there? re: Unemployed candidates for City Council. I would like to thank all the folks who are willing to stick their necks out and run the gauntlet of local politics. I am a Fiscal Conservative,Social Liberal who is looking for anyone who is able to bring jobs and lower taxes to the City I Love. Whomever is declared the winner in November, Please remember, You ride the road of success on the backs of the Little Guy.

pro dfd: Isn't it true that your union, basically wanted nothing to do with the members that were volunteering? In fact they were going to be brought up on charges if they didn't take it upon themselves to get out of the union. I am sure that all of them are proud to serve there local communities and have no regrets about what they do.

Hey dfl rube, You are an idiot! The way that you speak about other EMS folks definitely tells me that you are a failure in what you do. You put others down to make yourself feel better. I bet that YOU didnt even pass the fire test and were not selected by any other volunteer dept. Get real with your B.S. and wake up and smell the coffee. (or maybe your lavendar tea)

Rainbow Lady,

Where exactly does Beth Olson work? Her days at the DAIP are over so enlighten us or is this just another DFL LIE?

81902 - Thu Oct 29 23:45:25 2009 - [Will be celebrating next week ] By: Rainbow Lady
Just for the record, my friend Beth Olson, the council candidate who will be elected is employed.
Whoever is spreading these rumors of her being unemployed is just trying to undermine her successful campaign. Beth is an outstanding person and a great mother to her child. Why is it that during election time there seems to be mud-slinging towards candidates. I will be celebrating next week with both Beth and Kerry as our future council leaders. They will take us into prosperity and job creation..

81899 - Thu Oct 29 23:36:53 2009 - [Help our cause and grow our Unions] By: Pro-DFD
Just for the record, the Duluth Fire Union did not throw out the 3 Duluth Fire Fighters who wanted to serve their own communities as volunteer firefighters or "volly's" as we call them in the fire service. We would never do that. Many are disappointed they decided to become volunteers because it goes against what a professional fire departments stands for. If there were no volunteer firefighters in any community, those communities would have to hire full-time professional firefighters which would help our cause and grow our Unions. Every city and township needs firefighters and we want all cities and townships to employ full-time professional firefighters because it is what is needed. Not to piss on volunteers but they can't hold a candle to what we can do or what we are trained to do. This puts the taxpayers in jeopardy. It is my guess that a blogger named "politico" is one who tested with us but didn't pass because he is a PISS-ANT.

81896 - Thu Oct 29 23:23:56 2009 - [Gay DFD politics is very disturbing ] By: BK
There's no way I expect to see OUR fire department in GLBT parades using city resources. First responders need to be ready at all times or turn the duty over to others. The DFD getting involved in all this gay politics is very very disturbing and we're not getting our money's worth. What ever got the DFD involved so heavily with the GLBT issues?

81895 - Thu Oct 29 22:45:39 2009 - [DFD will have to lay it all on the line] By: LezBeReal
It's only a matter of time until the DFD have to lay it all on the line.

July 30, 2008
CBNNews.com - Outside of gay marriage, another legal battle is brewing in California
Four San Diego firefighters ordered to work a gay pride parade are suing the city for sexual harassment and the violation of their freedom of speech.
"Me and my crew were given a direct order to be in that parade," captain John Ghiotto said.

Ghiotto had served with the San Diego fire department for 19 years before receiving parade orders for the first time. He says he and his fellow crew members feared retaliation if they refused to go along. "My engineer was on the captain's list. I was on the battalion chief's list, and if you go against any type of order I would be suspended on the spot," he explained.
The crew went ahead with orders. Pictures from the day show an event charged with sexual activity and nudity.
"The stuff that goes on in that parade, if I was to go out and take pictures of some of that stuff we saw out there and hang it in the fire station, I would be disciplined," Ghiotto said.
The firefighter's lawsuit charges the city of San Diego with sexual harassment, violation of freedom of speech and retaliation.
The San Diego city attorney called the retaliation charges "petty" and "not true."
City officials did admit, however, they got "caught short" on the day of the parade and asked Ghiotto's crew for help.

dfl rube, I do not give you the dignity of using capital letters. You know as well as I do that many people, who are not connected, past the fire test, but because they were not connected they were not offered the position, even though they were ranked higher on the civil service test. Cynic, seriously? St. Louis Cty Rescue? The losers who failed the fire tests they took after leaving fire school? The tardy folks, that the REAL fire/resque folks pass on the way back to the station, as they are still on lights and sirens on the way to the finished emergency? The people with a station in Pike Lake when a water/car accident emergency in Lakeside happens and it takes them an hour to find their rig let alone respond to Lakeside? Need I say more, Cynic? Pass through downtown anytime your in the area. Spend some money here as well!! Support your local city services!!

"C" so you are admitting that you do come from an "upper-class upbringing" and "privileged background". It is quite clear that you admit to that in your writings. You blog so much you can't keep track of your own BS. LOL!! Where in the world did you get all that money to travel? 45 countries! Wow! Why do you hide your upper class background? Why live in Duluth? The upper east side would suit you much better. BTW, how was the Concorde?

From DCB Watch. Written by "C" of course.

"BTW, I was surprised that the geniuses over at the DCB are trying to downplay DELETED obvious affluence (which is totally irrelevant to anyone outside of her family and friends) by ranting and railing about a Beth Olson supporter's "upper-class upbringing" and privileged background." Um, so what, that person (a.k.a. "C") isn't running for office now, is she ("C") ? So it's even *more irrelevant* to public discussion than DELETED socio-economic status.

I hope they figure in all the benefits for life etc. we will pay to firefighters when they save us all this money by providing ambulance service. I keep hearing we have the most expensive fire department in the state can you imagine if they take over the ambulance service. What DFD is looking for is the nice fat raises that will come with ambulance service jobs.

How about looking into running something similar to the St Louis Co. volunteer rescue squad inside the city of Duluth. It could be call the Duluth volunteer rescue squad.

The Duluth media is DFL. Take Stahlalinski and the DNT for example. They are as biased as they come. Locals committing crime, what a crock. Then catering to Claire Kirch, another crock of DFL crap. No surprise to me that they hid the Beth Olson and Kerry Gauthier no job facts and even the DNT even endorsed them. More liberal biased media plain and simple.

Put aside the fact that these two candidates are respectively lesbian and gay and ask yourself this question: DO YOU REALLY WANT PEOPLE WHO CANNOT HOLD A JOB REPRESENTING YOU?

TONY: Inspector Clouseau, this is breaking news about Olson. We knew about Gauthier getting fired. The important question is why. Thanks for the excellent post.

Looks like Senator John Kerry is trying to run the war in Afghanistan like the war was run in Vietnam, getting politics involved. Washington elites and elected officials will never win wars or any conflicts, it's the boots on the ground that win with guidance from the Generals'. Isn't that right Larry? Oh I forgot, when his number came up he fled to Canada to avoid serving his country and then when the Vietnam war is all over he starts working for "the working man". I'm at the "working mans" watering hole almost every Friday about 5:30 for a drink, if you'd show up I'd buy you one and we can discuss your draft dodging, hell you might even have a good explanation why you'd let your fellow classmate fight in the Vietnam War while your fleeing from your call to duty. The soldiers who fought in Vietnam are true "Labor World" workers, and so are the current ones fighting in Iraq and Afghanistan.

81868 - Thu Oct 29 07:37:45 2009 - [Do taxpayers pay Gold Cross?] By: Pro-DFD
What we are trying to do is save the taxpayers money by looking at the possibility of the fire department providing the medical service in Duluth. We want to put a comprehensive committee together to look at the possibility of getting rid of Gold Cross if it makes economic sense for the taxpayers. The City of Superior is doing the exact same thing. We want to look at providing the medical service because we think it will save the taxpayers money and know we can respond faster than gold cross. The Duluth Fire Department is a first class organization who wants to serve the first class citizens of Duluth the way they deserve to be served. Many thanks to our supporters.

81866 - Wed Oct 28 21:34:12 2009 - [A strong independent DCB woman ] By: C K
For the record:

1. I am envious of Tony Ramone.

2. I do not try to ever post anything on the DCB. Well nothing I would admit to anyway. I can't help it. I have a narcissistic personality. I have all the answers, I have the *intellect* and I'm a strong independent woman who always has to have the last word. Why would I want to associate with hard working American patriots who make this country work, who are essentially *right* on the issues. When I do try to argue ideas, my logic is contradictory, nonsensical, or completely incomprehensible. Many comments posted on the DCB under my name are actually posted there by me. It's my guilty pleasure. Somebody has to tell you right wing misogynistic, racists, the *progressive* point of view. Somebody needs to make an attempt to silence you. The truth about us cannot be exposed.

3. I have read the DCB and disagree quite often, but the latest posts about me are surprising true. Uh, yeah, I live on a trust fund. So what! Do you think I'd really buy a mansion on London Rd? Instead I choose to live in a house near UMD that's bursting at the seams and is next to a student rental. Why? To make me look like an *average* person. Friends of people who live in glass houses really shouldn't throw stones. NOT! That's why I live in a brick house.

4. I think that the DCB is where the action is these days. It's the only blog besides this one I post comments on -- b/c I know my comments won't be altered by those who know my agenda. I want to buy the DCB-- so it isn't controlled by someone who is not under my thumb.

Beth is a social worker in Duluth and a community leader. She is running to build a stronger, more inclusive city. Currently, the Duluth City Council has a conservative, anti-labor majority by one vote. The election of Beth will flip the Duluth City Council to a progressive majority. UNSKEWED ALL MEMBERS COULD VOTE SURVEY RESULTS
The results are in from the Hermantown school district bond referendum survey. A poll of the Chamber membership was conducted to reflect the business community's view on this important issue.

Following are the results:

29.3% support the referendum
53.3% oppose the referendum
17.3% are undecided

The Hermantown Chambers seems a lot different than the Duluth Chamber.

I just got an adorable flyer in the mail from the DFL. It shows all of the local candidates they are endorsing.

This practice is against the rules of the city charter regarding municipal election laws, but that's okay- they're all so cute and everything, they can just seem to get away with practically anything.

I'll be taking this cute little flyer with me to the polls so I can see even more clearly who NOT to vote more.

Thanks, DFL, for the education.

Thank you.

81848 - Tue Oct 27 08:06:53 2009 - [Reinert owned by DFD union] By: Politico
Anyone want to make a bet that former city councilor Roger Reinert will be pushing at the state legislature a new law on changing the primary service area for ambulance service.

You see, for the past 20 years the Duluth Fire Service has wanted this and in the past it went down in flames because of a state law. In this case the state law states there shall be only one ALS (advanced life support) service in any one primary service area. In Duluth we have Gold Cross Ambulance providing that ALS service. Roger Reinert owes the fire department favors for them endorsing him and working on everyone of his campaigns. It is NOT a coincedence that the Duluth city council voted in favor of looking at the possibility of the fire department providing ALS service at this particular time. This folks is all timed by the fire department. I can say our fire fighters are very good people but are being led by some politically motivated individuals. On a side note, I'm told the fire union kicked 3 firegighters out because they serve on a volunteer fire department and serving as a volunteer firefighter is not desired by the Duluth Fire Union leadership. I think these 3 firefighters serve on the Hermantown volunteer fire department. I say good job for wanting to volunteer as a firefighter in your own community.

81847 - Tue Oct 27 07:43:40 2009 - [Lost respect for DFD] By: Duane D.
The way our government is expanding and spending our money, it makes perfect sense that now our local fire department wants to expand to provide ambulance service and then thinking it is going to save the taxpayers money or provide revenue. Any government expansion into the private sector is almost always a disaster. I'm sure whomever is on that committee to review this change will, in short order, figure it out. The Duluth fire fighters need to stay out of politics. After endorsing Beth Olson as a council candidate they lost respect.

Dfd’er said the following “it is not like the police where 5 officers responding to 1 incident results in 5 calls for service, artificially inflating numbers.” Dfd’er if you do work for the fire department like your handle indicates you would know that when a person calls 911 for police response it generates an ICR. If 1 squad is dispatched to that call it shows as 1 call for service, if “5” officers respond to that call it’s still 1 call for service or 1 ICR. So If 5 officers go to the same call it’s only 1 ICR, Hardly inflating numbers. Under the fire department if 3 fire trucks go to the same call for service then they code it as “3” runs. So if they sent 8,177 trucks to 1 call for service they count that as 8,177 runs. BTW what do you mean when you call them “unique fire calls”?

I was looking at used cars on craigs list and got a kick out of this add. Look at the bottom and see where the car is located.

"1998 Ford Taurus

Runs great!

Recently broken into and had the heater, AC, and fan control knobs removed with the sterio. The driver side window rolls down but had the u-shaped bar broken when it was popped out.

The dashboard had the clips removed along with the stereo, a new plate could be glued on with no problem tho.

The Car runs perfectly, there is no damage to any of the inner workings of the car, I just want to switch cars and this is a perfect opportunity.

Car is perfect for someone sho likes to work on cars, or someone needs a car for cheap to get around.

Drop an e-mail if you would like to check out the car, want pictures, or want more information."

Looks like our elected "leaders" need to retake drivers ed.

Whats with DFL'ers and driving? Remember Sharla last winter? On her way down to beggin days at the capitol? She rolled her car. I just don't get it. If they can't control a car, how in the hell can they control a city / state budget?

Good call there Roger, blame the electronic sign. Whatever you do, don't take personal responsibility! I wonder how this can be linked to the Bush administation?

Another issue. Why is Roger driving a foreign made car? A VW. I thought he was a "union man". Should he not buy and drive an American made vehicles?

From the DNT:

Icy roads in Duluth lead to many accidents this morning
Published: October 24, 2009 4:09:15 PM CDT
Icy road conditions resulted in about 15 minor accidents on Interstate 35 in Duluth this morning, but only two of the accidents reported minor injuries, said the Minnesota State Patrol.
A dispatcher called it “absolute chaos for a while out there.

Most of the accidents happened near the 21st and 27th Avenues West exits.

One of the accidents had involved state legislator Roger Reinert and his Volkswagen Jetta near 21st Avenue West at about 8:45 a.m today.

“It was pretty scary,” Reinert said of the accident that resulted in a trip to urgent care for a minor head injury.
Reinert said his car hit glare ice and did two spins before hitting a median.

In the approximately 40 minutes before the tow truck arrived, Reinert said he saw more than six more vehicles get in accidents at that spot.

“I got out of my car and I couldn’t keep my feet,” Reinert said.

Reinert said he was disappointed that the electronic signs over the roadway didn’t alert drivers to the adverse conditions.

“In retrospect, my gosh, that is what the signs are supposed to be for,” Reinert said. “If it posted something, it could have avoided some of the accidents.”

Reinert said he will look into fixing the sign alerts next week when he returns to St. Paul.

Tourv, I remember many years ago(over 20) a person telling me they were charged for too many fire or police calls to their house. Could have been they were filling me with bull but it just stuck in my head and made. I don't know if anyone on here knows if people were charged for too many police or fire call years ago?

Did you know people will call 911 and ask what time it is? If we had less people abusing the system it would help or like you say charging them. If they call 911 over nothing then have it charged to their phone bill and the money funneled back into police and fire.

The financial aspects of any city are not easily understood by many members of the public but I feel the need to respond to what a blogger who identifies himself/herself as "Dodge St." wrote earlier. To Dodge St., I say your numbers you present are not totally accurate because the numbers given to the state by our local fire department are the correct numbers for any given incident. What you need to figure out is what actually constitutes a "structure fire", or a "hazmat" incident or other "misc" calls for service in our Duluth Fire Department. I will give you a few examples that qualify for each. This is a true story, a man was using a propane torch in his garage and inadvertantly threw some hot ashes into his garbage. The ashes smoldered for awhile and the homeowner came back outside to find smoke coming from the garbage can. He grabbed the garbage can and pulled it outside the garage and watered it down. The neighbor seeing this called 911 reporting a "garage fire". Several minutes later 3 Duluth Fire Engines arrived however there was nothing for them to do because the homeowner had put it out himself. Guess what? In this particular case, the Duluth Fire Department coded this call as a "structure fire". When they get called to the local gas station because a vehicle owner, while filling up with gas, spills some gas, they code it as a "HazMat" incident even though they put 3 handfuls of "cat litter" down to soak the half-gallon of gas up. Another example is when the Duluth Fire Department puts on these safety clinics such as hosting a car-seat clinic at one of their firehalls, they count every time they assist or educate a person on the proper way to use a car seat as a "Misc" fire call. Are you getting the picture now? Lastly, we need to give the fire department credit where credit is due. They along with the police department are undertaking a new idea to our city. They will now be charging for false alarms. Businesses or private property owners who have several false alarms in any given period of time will now be charged for those false alarms. This is a great idea. Because both police and fire respond to many false alarms (99%), this will save thousands and thousands of dollars each year for the taxpayers.

I will give you a little known fact... over 50% of the "Professional Firefighters" in Duluth who are against having a volunteer service due to it's "inadequacy" actually live outside of the city limits....in areas of "inadequate, volunteer Fire Service" and dont pay one red cent toward their own livelihoods in taxes that they pay ourside of the city. Just take a look at a roster. Additionally, the run numbers that the FD records equals one run number for every truck that moves. Automatic (false) fire alarm with 6 units responding = 6 calls. Money well spent?????? NOT!!!

81812 - Fri Oct 23 23:28:25 2009 - [Continued DFD fleecing] By: Dodge St
to mr. DFD'r. Your one of the reasons the Duluth Fire Department is the most expensive fire department in the state. you sleep a third of the time you work, fight 10 true structure fires a year and are looking to save your jobs by trying to become the paramedics too. You and your buddies are fleecing the taxpayers beyond belief. You have 36 firefighters sleeping every night and gettting paid by the taxpayers. By the way, when you and your professionally trained firefighters respond to a medical call, I'm sure Gold Cross Ambulance service, (the paramedics in our city,) appreciate doors being held open for them, the ambulance cot brought in for them and the little white piece of paper with the patients name on it which you hand to the paramedics is very helpful. All 4 of your firefighters friends aren't really needed at medicals and you know it. You and your buddies drive around town blowing your sirens like your the most important people in the town only to find that your responding with your lights and sirens blowing to a patient who has had back paid for several days. The DFD wants to put on a show for the public driving fast and loud, if only the taxpayers really knew what your all about, your scare tactics are old and the public isn't buying them anymore. We need to scale back the number of firefighters on duty to about 20 and if a major fire happens, you can call more in if needed or use mutual aide, depending on the location. OH, thats right, you refuse to call any surrounding volunteer fire departmnents to help because your ego's get in the way. DFD is one of the reasons our city is in big financial trouble. The DFD and their PAC is losing credibility from the taxpayers every day.

Hall's mention of her backpacking trip through Europe reminds me of my own trips after I graduated from college. She & I are about the same age, however I hardly doubt, we would have crossed paths in the mid-80s in Europe. The dollar was king then (10 French Francs to the dollar for instance), and it wasn't so hard to live on $1/day, if you were a commoner. They resort to sleeping in convents, train stations, or even slept under the table, they even took temp jobs that'd pay room & board. Not me. Because of my background and upper class upbringing (I attended elite private colleges) I could afford *1st class* accomodations. Back in the 80's the Concorde was in its glory days. One could fly to Paris in under 4 hours. I doubt Hall could have afforded that. Unlike you all I have been to over 45 countries, including Japan, India, Israel... to mention a just a few. Those were the days, it seems like it was a rite of passage for college students back then, the dollar is so weak I doubt any of you could afford it even if you had the culture, class and sophistication to travel abroad.

If that was 354 fires the Duluth "Fire" Department responded to was for a year that comes down to what? 29.5 fires a month? How many fire halls to handle 29.5 fire calls a month? BTW were all those "reported" fires actually fires?

How about some kind of volunteer Duluth Rescue Squad to handle many of those other calls the DFD goes on? More people trained in the community and living in the community would be a good thing.

Let's not forget many of these heavily trained Duluth firefighters do not even live in Duluth. They put their trust when they have their heart attack into the hands of Gold Cross, St Louis Co rescue squad or a volunteer fire department somewhere.

Many people do not have cable tv as they cannot afford it. Property taxes are just one portion of the taxes Duluthians pay into the city. There is city sales tax and many other fees. Go to the City of Duluth web site and look up the list of fees people pay. Look up what people pay for licenses and building permits. The people in Duluth and those who own businesses or rental property are paying plenty into the city coffers. Property taxes and cable tv indeed. Enjoy your pay and benefits dfd'er. They are some of the best on the planet.

To correct the false information reported here by dodge st-
According to the MN State Fire Marshal's Report "Fire In Minnesota" Duluth Fire Department responded to 354 Reported fires with a total fire loss of$5,185,482.00. They also responded to 8,177 other runs as well, for a total of 8531 calls. These are unique fire calls, it is not like the police where 5 officers responding to 1 incident results in 5 calls for service, artificially inflating numbers.
What this report does not show, unfortunately, is the millions of dollars saved by a quick response with the level of staffing needed to put these fires out in the early stages. Those fires are largely unheard of, because a fire held to a small room or trash can just isn't news worthy.
On the EMS front, Dodge street should feel safe, because #6 engine is only a few blocks from his home. It is equipped with well trained EMT's, and often a paramedic is working there. If Dodge Street has a heart attack and his heart stops, they can begin CPR within a minute or two. They are also equipped with a defibrilator, which may restart his heart, and they can keep him on oxygen and help him along until gold cross arrives. If they are coming from their station at 40th West, it could be a while. Just hope they are not coming from Hawthorne... Without 6 engine just a few blocks away, it would likely be much longer before CPR could begin or your heart defibrilated. Would Dodge Street live long enough for Gold Cross to arrive? That's just not a chance I want to take.
As far as fleecing goes, most of us pay less for our city portion of property taxes than we do for cable TV.

Today, I’m (Heath Hickok) proud to announce my endorsement of Kerry Gauthier in his campaign for the Duluth City Council seat in District 4. I believe that Kerry is committed to serving all of the constituents in district 4 equally and intends to be fiscally responsible.

Kerry stated that he is against increasing city fees and is against raising taxes during a recession. He also expressed a willingness to work with the business community and that he would welcome new business developments to the city. Furthermore, we both agree that investing in our neighborhoods should be a top priority for the Duluth City Council.”

Meantime, Grant released the following written statement regarding Hickok’s endorsement of Gauthier:

“I guess I am somewhat surprised because Mr. Hickok represented himself at times as a ‘fiscal conservative’ to the citizens in the 4th District. Apparently, that was a political tactic to win votes in the primary.

I also think Heath is positioning himself with the DFL for their endorsement in 2011 when it is rumored that Heath will run for the city council At Large seat.

I’m further puzzled by the fact that the director of a business organization (Lincoln Park Business Group) would endorse a person with such liberal positions, inconsistent with creating a climate for economic development.”

I've about had it. This town is getting worse. It's being run by sycophants that only care about their own political ambitions or preserving their wealth status. No one is trying to bring in new jobs. I repeat- NO ONE! The Mayor is a joke. We continue to elect ticks like Oberstar, despite a failing economy and an aristrocratic mentatlity of our elected officials. We worship the march towards socialism because of a few organized people that feel that traditional morals and values went out with the horse and buggy. We have companies like DELETED who outsource all of their jobs to out of state companies. We have Government programs like Visit Duluth who do nothing for our area but butter their friends bread. We have unions who will picket a small mom and pop business if they don't open up a new union shop. We have anti-development cronies who spend more on eliminating competition than their own streets. We discourage a new business from opening up by our anti-business climate. We spend more time/money on yanking down a donated monument to the ten commandments while putting up a monument for a hanging that took place 100 years ago. We'll push for a casino train from the cities but will make damn sure that our government doesn't cut back on employee hours or wages- who cares about the private sector! Our local elected officials get paid for doing NOTHING- check out the likes of Pig Swiney or any other County Board member- they don't even have to go to work for crying out loud! Yet we still pay these people, we still elect them, and we still wonder why our streets are in shambles, we're losing jobs, businesses are closing and our biggest employers are the local hospital (non-profit!) and local government. For God's sake people WAKE UP! AAAAAAAAARGGGGH!!!!!

From just up from the Secretary's house. DFL Rube, read your own Duluth Fire Dept. stats. In 2008, there were 11 legitiment house fires in our city. In that number of 11 house fires includes the deck of a house which started on fire in the lakeside area where in fact, the neighbor put it out with his garden hose before your sleeping friends awoke and made all kinds of noise with their fire engines arriving at the scene ready to use their professional training to put out a deck which was on fire. But they didn't need you, it was a neighbor who put the fire out with a garden hose. That incident alone, including your professional fire department response cost the taxpayers almost $5,000 because your professionally trained firefighters cost the taxpayers of this city $2,000 every hour of every day, even while sleeping which you and your firefighter friends do one-third of your entire career. We taxpayers pay $50,000 a day to staff the overstaffed Duluth Fire Department. The DFD is fleecing the taxpaying Duluthians but the taxpayers are being educated. The most expensive Fire department in the state is the Duluth Fire Department. The same fire department who was on the scene of a structure fire on Woodland avenue within minutes of the fire starting and the whole damn house was a loss. The only reason their was a fast response to that particular house fire was because your rig was traveling down Woodland Avenue to the grocery store in Kenwood and the resident of the house was at the end of her driveway staying clear of the fire. On this incident your union president got in front of the camera's and said the structure was lost because of the materials used in making the beams in the house. OMG It is no surprise you want to take over a private ambulance service to save your jobs. Change is a comning.....

Man pleads guilty to Central Hillside stabbing

A Duluth man pleaded guilty today to an assault in which he stabbed a man outside a Central Hillside residence.

Byron Murray Hobbs, 64, admitted to stabbing Michael Hangsleben once in the ribs on Sept. 10 in the area of the 300 block of East Sixth Street. The victim sustained a stab wound to the left side of his chest.

Hobbs told Judge Shaun Floerke that Hangsleben started the fight and he responded by drawing a pocket knife from his pocket in self defense.

“It was to stop him — once in and out,’’ Hobbs said of the stabbing. He said he understood that he could have retreated, as the law requires him to do for a self defense claim. The victim didn’t sustain a life-threatening injury.

Floerke scheduled sentencing for Nov. 10.

Or is there something else going on at the fire department where GLBT issues take priority over the public safety you are supposed to provide?

Why can’t you just do your jobs and get out of the GLBT nonsense with Beth Olson who dumped her husband for another woman and goes to another country to get married to this woman.

Saying city government is going to take over for a private business and save or better yet make us money is like saying you can reverse the flow of the Mississippi river.

All of a sudden we would need more firefighters and by the time you've paid all their retirement alone it would cost a small fortune. Not to mention all the health care for them their spouses and all their children. Then the remodel of fire halls for added ambulance service.

What I read said the fire department arrived earlier 1/3 of the time, Gold Cross arrived earlier 1/3 of the time and 1/3 of the time it was a tie. Then again it doesn't matter if the DFD arrived faster 100 percent of the time as the City of Duluth does not need to take on even more spending at this time. Even if Gold Cross left Duluth we should first look for another private company to take over ambulance service.

BARSTOOL ECONOMICS

Suppose that every day, ten men go out for beer and the bill for all ten comes to $100. If they paid their bill the way we pay our taxes, it would go something like this:

The first four men (the poorest) would pay nothing.
The fifth would pay $1.
The sixth would pay $3.
The seventh would pay $7.
The eighth would pay $12.
The ninth would pay $18.
The tenth man (the richest) would pay $59.

So, that’s what they decided to do.

The ten men drank in the bar every day and seemed quite happy with the arrangement, until one day, the owner threw them a curve. “Since you are all such good customers,” he said, “I’m going to reduce the cost of your daily beer by $20.” Drinks for the ten now cost just $80.

The group still wanted to pay their bill the way we pay our taxes so the first four men were unaffected. They would still drink for free.

But what about the other six men – the paying customers? How could they divide the $20 windfall so that everyone would get his ‘fair share?’

They realized that $20 divided by six is $3.33. But if they subtracted that from everybody’s share, then the fifth man and the sixth man would each end up being paid to drink his beer. So, the bar owner suggested that it would be fair to reduce each man’s bill by roughly the same amount, and he proceeded to work out the amounts each should pay.

And so:
The fifth man, like the first four, now paid nothing (100% savings).
The sixth now paid $2 instead of $3 (33%savings).
The seventh now pay $5 instead of $7 (28%savings).
The eighth now paid $9 instead of $12 (25% savings).
The ninth now paid $14 instead of $18 (22% savings).
The tenth now paid $49 instead of $59 (16% savings).

Each of the six was better off than before. And the first four continued to drink for free. But once outside the restaurant, the men began to compare their savings.

“I only got a dollar out of the $20,”declared the sixth man. He pointed to the tenth man,” but he got $10!”

“Yeah, that’s right,” exclaimed the fifth man. “I only saved a dollar, too. It’s unfair that he got ten times more than I got”

“That’s true!!” shouted the seventh man. “Why should he get $10 back when I got only two? The wealthy get all the breaks!”

“Wait a minute,” yelled the first four men in unison. “We didn’t get anything at all. The system exploits the poor!”

The nine men surrounded the tenth and beat him up.

The next night the tenth man didn’t show up for drinks so the nine sat down and had beers without him. But when it came time to pay the bill, they discovered something important. They didn’t have enough money between all of them for even half of the bill!

And that, ladies and gentlemen, journalists and college professors, is how our tax system works. The people who pay the highest taxes get the most benefit from a tax reduction. Tax them too much, attack them for being wealthy, and they just may not show up anymore. In fact, they might start drinking overseas where the atmosphere is somewhat friendlier.

"Relearning race: Teaching race as a cultural construction.

Joel M. Sipress

DESPITE A RECENT SPATE of newspaper and magazine articles chronicling the malleability of racial identity, it may nonetheless surprise many Americans to learn that the biological sciences have come to reject race as a scientifically meaningful category. No longer do scientists speak of the "races of man." Biology has abandoned as fruitless the search for hereditary traits that are sufficient to distinguish distinct human types. The tripartite division of humankind into "Negroid," "Mongoloid," and "Caucasoid" occupies a position in the biological sciences roughly equivalent to that of the Ptolemaic model of the universe in astronomy.

Historical scholarship has, in recent years, caught up with biological science. Since the publication of Barbara Fields' path-breaking 1982 essay, "Ideology and Race in American History," historians have to come to view racial identity as a social and cultural construction, rather than a biological fact. Historians generally understand that racial identity and racial categories are fluid and changeable. The study of racial identity and its evolution, in fact, has emerged as a major growth field for scholarship and publication.

I also have multiple advanced degrees but my success has nothing to do with the degrees I hold. It has to do with my outlook and my attitude toward life. My success is the result of my own hard work and sacrifice. I have never expected anyone, especially the governmnet to bail me out. I am responsible for my own successes and failures. If I don't succeed as I would like I don't expect the government to redistribute someone elses wealth to me to equlaize the result, especially if they have worked harder and sacrificed more to attain their success . As for Claire, I think someone who has led a life of priviledge and has a trust fund should be expected to be more successful than her. If you are born on third base you should be able to score. Don't try to overinflate them. I know who they are. Both are lost and need acceptance, they find it with the liberal politicians who are more than willing to use them to attain their goals. People power is the answer to eliminating the oppression of the federal bureaucracy in this country, which is strangling the freedoms from our land. Unless some political parties bring about some changes in their policies regarding tax relief, schools, law and order, and the high cost of living, they will face a massive protest at the ballot box by those who think like us.

People power, the strong voices and political action of the people expressed within the law, is the answer to curing our ills. Without a mass movement of the people the present trend of despotic and centralized government can and will destroy America.

Better give tax relief to the working people and put the burden on Wall Street, or some political parties will wind up short in the next election. We must have an atmosphere of freedom from unwanted intrusion from the federal government. Mankind must be free and unfettered by federal encroachment in their employment, home, community, domestic institutions, including schools and association with other human beings.

Our schools are being destroyed because those who believe in government by law and not by bureaucrats failed to unite against federal government control.

It is our desire and plan that the Independent American Party be responsive to the needs of the people. Please join us in this effort by clicking the join link, then donate what your concerns are valued at.

jthyme - Why is it the liberals' fault that oil prices are rising? It seems like their push for renewable energy will ease the demand on oil and therefore keep the price down.

If you ask me, the price of oil is rising again because people are driving their Hummers again. My cousin is in Iraq right now and I have half a mind to spraypaint "unpatriotic" across every Hummer I see. In WWII we scrapped metal to help the war effort; today we still act like gluttons for oil even when our sons and daughters (and cousins) are risking their lives for it.

Personally, I don't care if the price of oil goes up. I'm a logger. Sure it will cost more to fill my trucks, but maybe it will make more people heat with wood instead of oil and the demand for wood will go up. Short term pain for long term gains. None of my neighbors works on an oil well.

The following exerpt from Mark Levin eloquently explains the mindset of people like Claire Kirch and her husband Joel Sipress. They are dissatisfied with the condition of their own existance. They cannot accept personal responsibility for their own misery and they become envious of the success of others. They are unwilling to work hard and make the personal sacrifice neccessary to acheive the success that others have acheived and so they seek to destroy the successful. When they are frustrated in their own efforts to destroy those they envy they join with the politicians who they beleive can acheive this Utopian dream and releive their angst over not having what others have. Altough they find a sense of belonging in the common vision they share Joel and Claire are but pawns in this game. The politicians that they rely on for acceptance and affirmation have as much contempt for them as for the successful they wish to destroy.

"It is observed that the Statist (big government liberal) is dissatisfied with the condition of his own existence. He condemns his fellow man, surroundings, and society itself for denying him the fulfillment, success, and adulation he believes he deserves but has not earned. He is angry, resentful, petulant, and jealous. He is incapable of honest self-assessment and rejects the honest assessment by others of himself, thereby evading responsibility for his own miserable condition. The Statist searches for significance and even glory in a Utopian fiction of his minds making, the earthly attainment of which,he believes,is frustrated by those who do not share it. Therefore he must destroy the civil society piece by piece.

For the Statist, liberty is not a blessing but the enemy. It is not possible to achieve Utopia if individuals are free to go there own way. The individual must be dehumanized and his nature delegitimized. Through persuasion, deception, and coercion, the individual must be subordinated to the state. He must abandon his own ambitions for the ambitions of the state. He must become reliant on and fearful of the state. His first duty must be to the state; not family, community, and faith, all of which have the potential of threatening the state. Once dispirited, the individual can be molded by the state."

In her candidate profile published Oct. 18 (“At Large City Council candidate Becky Hall”) City Council candidate Becky Hall denied being a Republican. If true, her break with the Republican Party must be relatively recent.

In 2006, Hall ran for a seat in the Minnesota Legislature as a Republican. She also volunteered as a Republican vote challenger in last fall’s presidential election.

Individuals have the right to affiliate with whatever political party they believe best represents their principles and values. Candidates for public office, however, have an obligation to be honest about those affiliations. Perhaps Hall’s fear of losing outweighs her commitment to the truth.

Dear Holt Uncensored:

I am outraged at the line of questioning pursued by the Amazon.com attorneys in their lawsuit against Amazon Bookstore. This is harassment, pure and simple. I am in the process of composing a letter to Amazon.com informing them that, not only are they total homophobes who have no business prying into the personal lives of Amazon Bookstore owners and staff, but they are also simply incorrect in their theory that Amazon Bookstore caters only to lesbians.

I myself am a heterosexual married woman with a small child. Whenever I travel down to Minneapolis, I always make a point of stopping by Amazon Bookstore to see what's new. My husband, Joel Sipress, has accompanied me to Amazon on numerous occasions, and we have both purchased books there . . . Joel has never felt unwelcome at Amazon: Staff members have been cordial to him and he has found many, many books there that appeal to him. He has also attended several readings at Amazon and has been just one of a number of men at these events.

Moreover, Amazon Bookstore has a fabulous collection of children's books--not only have I purchased books for my daughter at Amazon, I have recommended Amazon Bookstore to friends (hetero and lesbian) with children who want good, non-stereotypical children's books.

Amazon Bookstore is a community treasure. To say that it caters to a small fraction of the Minnesota populace is ludicrous. I urge all of your online newsletter subscribers to write to Amazon.com and order them to tell their attorneys to quit harassing the owners of Amazon Bookstore about their personal lives or sexual preferences. It's nobody's business and has no place in this or any lawsuit.

81734 - Mon Oct 19 18:25:03 2009 - [A Sensible Gun Registration Plan] By: Truthism
YOU DON'T HAVE TO WORRY ABOUT THIS IN DFL DULUTH.

Finally, A Sensible Gun Registration Plan

Vermont State Rep. Fred Maslack has read the Second Amendment to the U. S. Constitution as well as Vermont 's own Constitution very carefully, and his strict interpretation of these documents is popping some eyeballs in New England and elsewhere.

Maslack recently proposed a bill to register non-gun-owners and require them to pay a $500 fee to the state. Thus Vermont would become the first state to require a permit for the luxury of going about unarmed and assess a fee of $500 for the privilege of not owning a gun.

Maslack read the "militia" phrase of the Second Amendment as not only affirming the right of the individual citizen to bear arms, but as a clear mandate to do so. He believes that universal gun ownership was advocated by the Framers of the Constitution as an antidote to a "monopoly of force" by the government as well as criminals.

Vermont 's constitution states explicitly that "the people have a right to bear arms for the defense of themselves and the State" and those persons who "conscientiously scrupulous of bearing arms" shall be required to "pay such equivalent." Clearly, says Maslack, Vermonters have a constitutional obligation to arm themselves so that they are capable of responding to "any situation that may arise".

Under the bill, adults who choose not to own a firearm would be required to register their name, address, Social Security Number, and driver's license number with the state. "There is a legitimate government interest in knowing who is prepared to defend the state should they be asked to do so," Maslack says.

Vermont already boasts a high rate of gun ownership along with the least restrictive laws of any state - it's currently the only state that allows a citizen to carry a concealed firearm without a permit. This combination of plenty of guns and few laws regulating them has resulted in a crime rate that is the third lowest in the nation.

Ahhhhhh yes.........I see gas went up another 10 cents per gallon today. That's up 28 cents per gallon since last week alone. How come I don't hear any "damn Bush" cries anymore? Heard that ALL the time when gas went up when Dubya was in office. Who's to blame now, Dumb F*** Liberals?

Harry Welty should stick to the LDV vs. LRFP stuff. I visited his lincolndemocrat blog today and encountered this:

"I pounded on the closet door and begged to get 'my sweetie' back but he just yelled through the crack in the door 'MY sweetie.' We argued like this all weekend and he keeps winning the argument by wrapping his arms around his grandma to keep her all to himself."

Wierdest blog post EVER. http://lincolndemocrat.com/?p=2657

At least you have one thing in common:

If a liberal doesn't like the way things are going, he blames the conservatives. If a conservative doesn't like the way things are going, he blames the liberals.

If you ask me, you're all monkeys slinging crap in the same cage. Or just fools in an echo chamber, I can't decide.

81730 - Mon Oct 19 15:23:35 2009 - [Differences ] By: Pitt Street Panther
Differences between conservatives and liberals

If a conservative doesn't like gun. he won't buy one.
If a liberal doesn't like guns, he wants all guns outlawed.

If a conservative is a vegetarian, he doesn`t eat meat.
If a liberal is a vegetarian, he wants all meat products banned for everyone.

If a conservative sees a foreign threat, he thinks about how to defeat his enemy.
A liberal wonders how to surrender gracefully and still look good.

If a conservative is homosexual, he quietly leads his life..
If a liberal is homosexual, he demands legislated respect.

If a black man or Hispanic are conservative, they see themselves as independently successful.
Their liberal counterparts see themselves as victims in need of government protection.

If a conservative is down-and-out, he thinks about how to better his situation.
A liberal wonders who is going to take care of him.

If a conservative doesn’t like a talk show host, he switches channels.
Liberals demand that those they don’t like be shut down.

If a conservative is a non-believer, he doesn’t go to church.
A liberal non-believer wants any mention of God and religion silenced. (Unless it’s a foreign religion, of course!)

If a conservative decides he needs health care, he goes about shopping for it, or may choose a job that provides it.
A liberal demands that the rest of us pay for his.
If a conservative slips and falls in a store, he gets up, laughs and is embarrassed.
If a liberal slips and falls, he grabs his neck, moans like he's in labor and then sues.

If a conservative reads this, he'll forward it so his friends can have a good laugh.
A liberal will delete it because he's "offended".

Why are you all so concerned with the race of the teenage girls? I live on the hillside and we all know that crimes are being committed by all kinds of people with all kinds of backgrounds. I had a white dude break into my house last month, but I didn't much notice his race as I leveled my weapon and calmly asked him to leave. No police needed for me, so stop drooling over your scanners. There are plenty of punks out there - both white and black. If you keep playing the race card offensively, they will get to keep using it defensively. I say shoot all the crooks and let God sort 'em out, and you can bet your sweet little white butts he doesn't sort 'em out by color. So, neither do I. And for your information, the same guy who almost peed on my rug when he saw the .45 was the same guy who I saw scoping out our neighborhood as a fake salesman a week before. No one suspected him cause he's white and you've convinced my neighbors that only black people from Chicago commit crimes. Thanks for nuthin - you almost got a white crook killed and I almost went to jail.

"I do not have a scanner Common Sns. What was the description of the four teenage girls? Curious minds want to know."

I heard the "drive by shooter" call but was at my office when the Lake Walk incident took place. The Police always give full discriptions out on the air, including race.

Either two things are happening with that one. Either, in true New Tribune fashion they are witholding something, or because the suspects are minors, the Police haven't given out more details in their report?

So it was 4 teenage girls. Wonder what high school they attend? East or Marshall? I was initially under the impression that the mugger was a loud mouth female, wearing flood pants whose breath smelled liked bad sushi.

Who loves ya baby!

I receive the DPD press releases from the police department. The original press release direct from Officer Brad Wick only said that there were four teenage females. The police press release did not contain any other information. Is the DNT pulling their strings too?

Are people sure about the police not being the ones to release suspects discriptions???

Anyone with a police scanner heard the detailed discriptions on the Lakewalk. Also, The drive by shooting suspect from Superior was clearly describe on the scanner as a "Black Male".The News Tribune LEFT OUT THAT VERY IMPORTANT PIECE OF INFORMATION! The News Tribune has a history of not publishing the racial part of the discription of a criminal, the police are searching for, if the suspect is a "minority"! You can thank Washington, Stahl, Karwath for that. God forbid they admit so much crime is caused by minorities.

Duluth Police officers have seethed at the Duluth News Tribune for years. What good does it do for the police to ask for the publics help in catching at-large criminals when the News Tribune censors the discriptions by covering up the suspects race? The discription is worthless.

STARFIRE: Common Sns, you're right again as Stahlalinski and the DNT tried to tell us locals were committing all the violent crime. This is not political correctness but is DNT plain old DFL Duluth censorship and Kool-Aid trying the hide the truth in Duluth.

I can only wonder if the four muggers were more DFL Duluth imports. We all know why the police could easily identify arrest the suspects. It was the 6" stilettos and Louis Vuitton handbags!

The police kept the description of the four females robbers to themselves. Whats up with that?

"This morning at 10:45 AM, a Duluth Police Officer was responding to a call in Canal Park when he observed four teenage females that matched the description of the suspects from Friday’s robbery. The four were transported to the Arrowhead Juvenile Center where they were lodged for Aggravated Robbery and Fifth Degree Assault."

You can take the lead in telling "C" to STFU. She been a pest on local blogs for a few years now, people are finally waking up to her agenda. DCB exposed her hidden agenda quite some time ago and has for the most part kept "it" the hell off this blog.

http://www.duluthnewstribune.com/event/article/id/149356/

The 39-year-old’s success hasn’t come without controversy. After winning the primary, she faced criticism on right-leaning blogs and radio talk shows after it was revealed that Olson was arrested for disorderly conduct during a 2004 protest against President Bush when he spoke at the Duluth Entertainment Convention Center. The charges were dropped; the city attorney said Olson should have been charged with trespass.

Olson said she was protesting Bush’s stance against recognizing relationships for gay and lesbian people.

She’s also been active in trying to raise awareness of GLBT rights. In 2005, she and her then-partner, Angela Nichols, were featured in a News Tribune article about gay couples who were raising children. Olson married Nichols in Canada, but she said the two are no longer together.
